JANUARY - MARCH 1995

I have had so many requests for information on the earliest BLACK families to the US, I decided to dedicate the first issue of the year to the earliest familes. The April-June Issue will feature North Carolina, another cradle of history from which many BLACK families originate. I have a wealth of information gathered over the years, but if any of you have a North Carolina Family you would like in the newsletter, send it on and I will try to include it, with your name as submitter, of course.

STATE FILE OF THE MONTH Instead of a "State" file being featured this month, we will explore some of the BLACK families who came to this country before 1750. Obviously, most of these families came to the east coast, and settled in states along there. I think you will be surprised at how many there were, and the beginnings of your family line may be among them...

FYI - Just so you know, the Census of Ireland, 1659, by S'eamus Pendis, M.A., The Stationery Office, Dublin, Ire. 1939, p. 19 for Antrim, lists 10 BLACK families.

FAMOUS AND INFAMOUS BLACKS IN HISTORY

From Sandra P. McDaniel, a PATTON/BLACK researcher, with a family connection to Davy CROCKETT. The connection is more Patton than Black, but the story was so funny, I wanted to include it. Nancy(b. 1789-VA), the youngest daughter of William BLACK and Sarah HICKLIN, married Robert PATTON, whose sister Elizabeth married as her second husband, Davy CROCKETT. She had two children by the previous marriage, and Davy had three. Some years after their marriage, Davy is quoted as saying "Come quick, Bess, your children and my children are beating up our children!"
