Fell on knife and wounded self. Witnesses say; man held in investigation

Special to the Pheonix

Ft. Gibson, Dec 24-- Wesley Parton 35, Farmer, died here late this afternoon shortly after he had accidentally stabbed himself with a butcher knife. He bled to death before aid could be summoned.

Les Stafford, who witnessed said he had been fighting with Parton a few minutes before the fatal accident occurred, was arrested by B.H. Jarnigan, constable. He is being held in Muskogee co jail at Muskogee on investigation

According to Jarnagin, Parton in company with Stafford and another man was at the home of a Negro named Talley when the 2 men began arguing. They fell to blows and Parton it is said broke away and rushed from the house with a knife in his hand. he ran about 50 feet and tripped running the knife into his leg just above the knee. Stafford, also a farmer was arrested when officers found blood stains on the ground between where Parton fell and the house. The knife had been removed from the later's leg when authorities arrived.

Parton who lived between here and Braggs is survived by a widow and a baby. His body was brought to Muskogee in a Fuipel ambulance. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Note: Joyce Bly, Granddaughter of Wesley Parton told me that a Kangaroo Court had been held in Muskogee and Les Stafford had been cleared of all charges.

Edna Parton Mangrum says Wesley had gone to see Les Stafford to get some money that was owed to him to buy Christmas presents for his family. Les would not pay, they got into a fight and Les stabbed Wesley, it was subsequently ruled an accident in court. Most people called it a kangaroo court and believe Les Stafford got away with murder.

Joseph Partain, the very popular photographer, returned this week after two months absence during which time he sold stereoscopic, views in five counties in Arkansas, four in Missouri, and was down 30 days with small pox. Joe is a hustler, and our people are glad to know that he will be permanently located at his old stand after the first of next month.
