We have chosen the one which appeared to be most consistent. With in the framework, only every other page has a number printed upon it. Thus we chose to look at the situation thusly: It the book was layed open as is apparent in the microfilm then the numbered page was the one on the right. The left page had no number on it. We thus considered the composite page (left & right sides) as having the number given to the right page. Each side was microfilmed separately and thus scanned as such. When scanning, it is necessary to assign a number to each scan thus we assigned the pages on the left the designation ‘a’ and those on the right the designation ‘b’. Thus when the census book was opened to page 273 for example, ‘273’ was the number in the upper right corner of the right side page.
