The Joshua Reames Family

Joshua Reames was born around 1755 in Prince George, Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Joshua's father might have been Edward Reames, born in Surry County, Virginia (I'm still trying to confirm Joshua's parentage). The name of Joshua's wife is unknown at this time. At this time, only three of his children are known:

Azariah, see below
Ananias, b. ca. 1783
Benjamin M., b. ca. 1787

The 1820 Census Records gave Joshua's location in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Joshua died around 1830 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.

Azariah Reams was born in Virginia on May 22, 1782. His wife was named Elizabeth Bledsoe, who was born around November 2, 1790, in South Carolina (the daughter of Bartlett Bledsoe and Lydia Douglas. Their children were:

Carolina, b. ca. 1814, md. William ROSSER on Jan. 11, 1835
Bartlett Bledsoe, b. Dec. 12, 1816, md. Mary Jane ??
Gynny, b. ca. 1817, md. Middleton HUGGENS on Jan. 8, 1839
Caroline Catherine, b. ca. 1819, md. Jackson DUNAWAY on Feb. 9, 1839
Berimon Bledsoe, see below
Benjamin, b. ca. 1824, md. Catherine STEPHENS on Dec. 3, 1846
John Azariah, b. ca. 1825, md. Arrena A. WOOD on Oct. 17, 1844
Susan, b. ca. 1825, md. Thomas BALLARD on May 18, 1845
Elizabeth Frances, b. ca. 1828, md. John CABINESS on April 29, 1851
Joshua, b. ca. 1830
Sarah, b. ca. 1832
James Ramson, b. July 16, 1834, md. Caroline Tapley on Dec. 20, 1855

I also found graves in Meriwether County, Georgia, belonging to Thomas A. Reames (1847-1912) and Clamentine B. Reams (1841-1929). They are more than likely related to Azariah. I would like to know their relationships to Azariah.

In 1820, Arariah (sic) Reams was found in Edgefield District, South Carolina. The Joshua and Anias (sic) Reams families lived in the same vicinity. Joshua and Aninias were Azariah's father and brother. I was unable to find Azariah in the 1830 Census. By 1840, Azariah had migrated to Meriwether County, Georgia (per Census Records). His children Benjamin, Bartlett, and John lived nearby. According to the 1850 Census, Azariah still lived in Meriwether County. Some of the Reames family migrated to Tallapoosa County, Alabama around 1850. Azariah died on December 22, 1853 in Alabama

Thank You goes to Martha Pryor for her valuable contribution of the above information.

Berryman Bledsoe Reams was born February 2, 1820 in South Carolina. He married Martha Jane Hyard on September 9, 1841 in Meriwether County, Georgia. Martha was also born in South Carolina. According to the 1840 federal census, the family was living in Meriwether County, Georgia. Between 1850 and 1860, the family migrated to Tallapoosa County, Alabama. Their children were:

Nancy E., b. ca. 1842, md. Joel TAPLEY on Oct. 16, 1863
Carolina, b. ca. 1846
George A., b. ca. 1846, md. Mary L. PATTERSON on Dec. 17, 1874

Berrymon bought 49 1/2 acres of land in Tallapoosa County on June 1, 1849, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. His brother, John, bought land close by in 1858. Berrymon was in the 1860 Federal Census Records, Tallapoosa County, Alabama, living near the John and James Reams families, Berrymon's brothers. Berrymon died before August 9, 1897.

John Isaac REAMS was born in August of 1852 to Berimon Bartlett REAMS and Martha HYARD. He married Amanda "Elizabeth" BISHOP. Elizabeth's parents were Thomas J. and Rebecca BISHOP. Their children were:

John and his family were found in the 1900 Federal Census Records. The Census Records gave a birthdate of August 1852 and birthplace of Alabama. John's parents were born in South Carolina. According to the Census, Elizabeth had 9 children, but I have found 11. All of the children were born in Alabama.

The Reams were from Alexander City, in Tallapoosa County (information provided by Jocelyn Johnston, a Reams descendant). Land transactions were done around 1900 in Tallapoosa County. John Isaac handled Berrymon's estate after he died.
