bullet Peter Wade I Melton was born in 1825 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He was born in 1825. He died in May 1884 in Mount Olivet, Albemarle Co., Virginia, -4-. He was buried in May 1884 in Died of "inward tumor" at age 59. He has reference number 17. I found Peter W. Melton in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. In 1860 he is in
Albermarle County, Virginia, St. Ann's Parish. Peter W. Melton is 35 a
Wheelwright 500 80 Va. Martha A. Irving, his wife is 25. Son Charles
Pierce Meltonis 6 yrs. old. Peter is 4, John is 2, Henry is 2. This date is 8-8-1860.
In the 1850 census Peter W. Melton is in Flovanna County, Va. in the household of Asa J. Newton on the same page with William G. Melton 39 and Elizabeth 30. There are 5 marriages in Fluvanna of male Meltons before 1825. Joel Melton to Elizabeth Appleberry on 15 Nov. 1810. John Melton to

Pierce M Melton to Sarah C. Pettit on 8 Dec. 1841. Peter W. Melton got married in Fluvanna County, Va. on 1 Aug. 1853. There are 6 children and I do not think the above ages are correct. In the 1810 census there is a Pierce W. Melton
In 1864 Peter was in Clifton Forge, Alleghony County, Va., where Charles
Pierce Melton was born. There are 3 counties to work with. See famiily pages. There is a P. W. Melton in the 1st Inf. Co. B in Virginia, who was a Sargent.
I have found 10 children.
Peter W. Melton was alive on June 12, 1880 in the Sam Miller District of
Alvemarle, Co., Va. when the census was enumerated.
COPY OF LETTER FROM HOLLY COCHRAN ON FEBRUARY 14, 2002
Hi Joan,
Well, at last I have something to report. After searching through 5 reels of microfilm, I found Peter Wade Melton's entry in the death register in Aalbermarle County, Va. It reads like this:
Melton, Peter Wade died May (no date) 1884 at Mt. Oliver in Albemarle County, Va. White, male, age 59, died of " inward tumor", born in Fluvanna County, Va. He is the son of Rebecca Melton, his occupation was wheelwright, reported by widow Martha M. Melton.
I guess this just proves that you really have to check the records yourself, as I had written to Albemarld Co., Va. ages ago and they wrote back and said there was no record of Peter's death. Note that apparently Martha couldn't remember Peter's father's name, probably because he died shortly after Peter was born. Note also that Peter's mother, Rebecca, outlived her son by 3 years.
Mt. Olivet is the same area where Peter had lived since at least 1860, on the land his mother gave him in 1858, next to the Mount Olivet Methodist Church. Here's a link to a map showing approvimately where Peter and Martha live for 25+ years until his death.
http://terrasever.homeadvisor.man.com/image.asp?S=14&T=2&X=222&Y=1313&Z=17 &W=2
Right about where it says North Garden. You can zoom out twice to see where this is in relation to Charolttesville. The Fluvanna County border is just a little bit East of here, so it didn't take much effort to move from Fluvanna to Albemarle.
Also, Peter and Martha's son Walter M. Melton died about 2 months before his father's death - he was only 5 and was burned in a fire sommehow. Must've been a hard spring for Martha, losing her youngest son and husband so close together.
Melton, Walter M., died 21 March 1884, age 5, burned, at Mt. Olivet, son of P. W. and M. M. Melton, born in Albemarle Co. mother informed.
There's more! You may recall in my original report to you I theorized that James T. Melton living with Marths's parents, (the Irvings) in 1870 at 10 was probable the son of Peter and Martha. Well, he was, and he was killed on the railroad (presumably by a train, as he worked for the railroad)
5 August 1886 Melton, James T., white, male, died in Alleghany Co. killed by R. R., age 27, parents P. W. and M. A. Melton born Albemarle Co., occupation: R. R. E., informed by P. W. Melton, brother.
Finally, I dound the last missing child of Peter and Martha. Another Charles. This makes the 12 children she said she had on the 1900 census. Parents: Pierce Wade II Melton and Rebecca Duncan.

He was married to Martha A. Irving on 1 Aug 1853 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. Children were: Charles Pierce Melton, Peter Wade II Melton, John Henry Melton, Charles 2 Melton, Mary A. Melton, Henry Melton, Ida R. (Byrdie\Bertie) Melton, Martha A. ( II ) Melton , Walter M. Melton, James T. Melton, Charles 1 Melton, Laura V. Melton.

bulletPierce Wade II Melton was born in 1793 in Fluvanna Co., Virginia (Could be 1797). He died in 1826 in Fluvanna Co., Virginia (Died between April & Oct. 1826 -5-. He has reference number 1191. Pierce W. (Wade) Melton Jr. & Rebecca Duncan

Around 1818/19, Pierce W. Melton Jr. married Rebecca Duncan. Rebecca Duncan was the daughter of Jacob Duncan and his wife Lucy . Although Rebecca's death certificate says she was born in Fluvanna county, there is no evidence of Jacob Duncan in Fluvanna in the 1788-1810 timeframe. There is, however, a Jacob Duncan in the 1810 Buckingham census (county adjacent to Fluvanna), so Rebecca may have grown up in Buckingham county. There is no record of the marriage of Pierce Wade Melton and Rebecca Duncan in Fluvanna or Albemarle counties; I will look next in Buckingham for that record.

Pierce Wade Melton Jr. and Rebecca Duncan had the following known children:
John Fredson b. 1818/19
Mary Ann b. 1820-22
Martha J. b. 1821/22
Nancy H. b. 1823/24
Peter Wade b. 1825/27

In 1820, Pierce W. Melton Jr. first appeared in the tax lists and the count of white males in Pierce Sr.'s house decreased by one. He is alternately called Pierce W. Jr. (usually spelled Pirce) and Wade Jr. in the tax lists until his death. In the 1820 census, he is called Wade. The census tells us that Wade & his wife have been married less than 10 years and probably a lot less, since they only have one child. They were both born 1794-1804 and the child was born 1810-1820. Most likely they were born about 1794 and married about 1818/19.

In Oct 1823, Pierce W. Melton (Sr.) and his wife "Salley" gave 109 acres in Fluvanna county to Pierce W. Melton Jr. "for natural love and affection". Although this deed does not specify that he is their son, this type of deed of gift was most common between parents and children, and this is a rather substantial gift. This land was adjacent to the lands of John Woodfin, Rice Tilman, and Joseph Melton.

By 1825, Pierce W. Jr. had apparently decided to go by Wade in the tax lists, probably to avoid being mixed up with his father.

Wade (Pierce W. Jr.), died between the 1826 and 1827 tax collections, which usually occurred in the spring, so he probably died between March and October of 1826. When the court met on Oct 23, 1826, Rebecca Melton, widow & relict of Wade Melton, applied to the court to administer his estate , and his estate is carried on the tax lists for several years. This document provides the proof that Rebecca was the widow of Wade Melton. He was probably about 33-35 when he died. After about 7 or 8 years of marriage, Rebecca Duncan Melton was left a widow at the age of about 33, with 5 young children to raise on her own.

There is a note in the 1827 land book that says "80 acres transferred from Archibald Creasey to Jno. Timberlake and by him to P.W. Melton as per ___ by clerk". This 80 acres is then carried in the land tax lists under the name of "Pierce W. Melton Jr. Est." for several years. This means Wade's estate, unless he sold some of his land during his lifetime (which I have not checked into yet), contained 189 acres.

The 1830 Fluvanna census shows Rebecca Melton with 1 female 30-40 (b. 1790-1800), no males of a husbandly age, 1 female 10-15 (b.1815-1820), 2 females 5-10 (b.1820-1825), 2 males 5-10 (b.1820-1825), and no children born after 1825, which is consistent with Wade's death in 1826. The children's ages are consistent with the 1820 census for Wade and the fact that 4 out of 5 children were born after 1820 supports the theory that she married about 1818/19. She is on the same page as Pierce Sr., so apparently lives very close by.

Wade's estate must have been settled about 1832, when his estate was dropped from the tax lists, but there are no records for his estate in the Fluvanna Will Books (no will, inventory, or settlement records; the only record of his death is Rebecca's application to administer his estate, which is in the court order book). Rebecca appeared in the personal property tax list in 1834 and remained there through 1847.

Wade's father Pierce Sr. died between Nov 1833 and March 1835. I am surprised that he did not provide for Wade's children (his grandchildren) in his will.

The 1840 census shows Rebecca Melton in Fluvanna county with a daughter born 1810-1820, and a son & 2 daughters born 1820-1825. This correlates reasonably well to the later census data which shows Mary b. 1820-22, Martha b. 1821/22, Nancy b. 1823/24, and Peter born 1825/27. John, who is 21, has apparently moved out on his own or perhaps is living with one of his uncles. However, note that the John shown in the 1840 census with 2 children with 2 children under 5 cannot be Rebecca's son John Melton who married Louisa Thomas in 1840, unless they had 2 children before their marriage.

In 1843, Rebecca Melton sold a parcel of land in Fluvanna county; I am awaiting details on this transaction. Likewise, I am awaiting details of a land sale by John & Rebecca Melton in 1844 and a land sale by Rebecca in 1854.

On 9 October 1847, the following land deed was filed in Fluvanna county :
From: Rebecca Melton, Cornelius Taylor & Mary A. his wife, Asa G. Newton & Martha J. his wife, John N. Butler & Nancy H. his wife, Peter W. Melton (all of Fluvanna county), and John F. Melton & Louisa his wife of Amherst county
To: Thomas W. Omohundro of Fluvanna county
For: 130 acres in Fluvanna county, bounded by Joseph Wooling and Garland Farrar

1847 was also the last year that Rebecca Melton appeared in the personal property tax list, so it appears that she and the children sold the land they had jointly inherited from Wade Melton's estate and Rebecca probably moved in with one of her married daughters.

In the 1850 census, she is found living with her daughter Mary Taylor in Rockbridge county.

Rebecca Melton 50

On 24 November 1858, Rebecca Melton bought 2 acres of land from John O. Wingfield & his wife Ann G.D. Wingfield, for $80 . This land was in Albemarle county "at the Old Hardware Church near Goodwin's Mill, adjoining the lot of the Methodist Church (Mt. Olivet) and the road leading to Charlottesville on the south and John W. Wingfield (the vendor hereof) on the east and north". [Note that the clerk wrote "W" instead of "O" for Wingfield's middle initial. He is referred to again later as John O. Wingfield and that's how the deed was signed.]

A month later, on 28 December 1858, Rebecca performed an interesting transaction with this 2 acre parcel . She set up a trust with Charles Irving, the father-in-law of her son Peter Wade Melton, wherein she sold the 2 acre parcel described above to Charles Irving for $1.00, with the condition that Peter Wade Melton be allowed to live on the land, or collect rents from the land if he did not wish to live there. In this deed, it says "Rebecca Melton, from natural love and affection for Peter W. Melton, her son". So this deed provides the proof that Peter Wade Melton's mother was Rebecca Melton. At this time, Rebecca lived in Fluvanna county and acknowledged the deed there. Charles Irving did not acknowledge the deed until 22 March 1862, when he filed in Albemarle county. Peter W. Melton did not acknowledge the deed until 25 August 1862, also in Albemarle county.

In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses, Rebecca lived with her daughter Nancy Butler, moving back & forth between Fluvanna and Albemarle counties (thanks to Irmalee Williams for this information).

The Children of Pierce Wade Melton Jr. and Rebecca Duncan

John F. b. 1818/19 married Louisa Thomas on or about 23 Jan 1840
Per the 1847 land deed from Rebecca and her children to Thomas Omohundro, John & Louisa lived in Amherst Co in 1847, but I can't find them in Fluvanna, Albemarle, or Amherst in the 1850 census. John's marriage bond states that he was 21 years of age, which might mean that he was 21 or older, since the goal of this statement was to establish merely that he was of legal age to marry, so unless he lied, he was born in 1819 or earlier.

Mary Ann b. 1821/22 married Cornelius Taylor on 26 Oct 1842
They moved to Rockbridge county, where Rebecca is found living with them in the 1850 census. I have not followed them further.
Known children of Mary Ann Melton & Cornelius Taylor (from the 1850 census):
Cornelius b. abt 1843/44
Sarah P. b. abt 1845/46
Martha I. b. abt 1847/48
Eliza b. Sept/Oct 1850

Martha J. b. 1821/22 married Asa G. Newton on or about 14 April 1847
She is found with Asa & their children in the 1850 & 1860 Fluvanna censuses. In 1870, she is alone with the children, so I presume Asa has died, but I'm checking on this.
Known children of Martha J. Melton & Asa G. Newton (from the censuses):
Alice A.V. b. 1848
John W. b. Sept 1849, died between Aug 1850 and Sept 1860
Mary J.R. b. 1853/54
Wyatt F. or W. b. 1854/55
Robert L. b. 1860/61

Nancy H. b. 1823/24 married John N. Butler on or about 13 April 1846
Rebecca spent the last 20+ years of her life living with them as they moved back & forth between Fluvanna & Albemarle counties.
Known children of Nancy H. Melton & John N. Butler (from the censuses):
John P.W. b. abt 1852/53
William H. b. 1854/55
Luther F. b. 1856/57
Based on the 1880 census, John P.W. Butler (which probably stands for Peter Wade or Pierce Wade) married Mary L. ___ about 1875/76 and had children Josephine, Minnie, and John.

The Children of Pierce Wade Melton Jr. and Rebecca Duncan (continued)

Peter Wade born 1825/27 married Martha Irving on or about 4 August 1853
In the 1850 Fluvanna census, he lives with his sister Martha Newton. In 1860, he lives with his wife & children in St. Ann's Parish, Charlottesville, Albemarle county, VA. In 1870, he lives with his wife & children in Sam Miller township, North Garden, Albemarle county. I noticed that John O. Wingfield lives only a few houses away in 1870, which suggests that Peter lives on the land his mother gave to Charles Irving for Peter in 1858, since that land was adjacent to the land of John O. Wingfield. I checked a map and North Garden is very near the site of the Old Hardware Church. This area is along the Hardware River, about 6 miles south of Charlottesville.
In 1880, they are still living in the Sam Miller district, Albemarle county. There is no 1890 census because it was burnt. By 1900, Peter's widow Martha Melton lives with her married daughter Bertie Walton (married Joseph J. Walton 22 Nov 1887 in Albemarle co) in Clifton Forge, Alleghany county, VA. Apparently Peter died between 1880 and 1900. There is no death record for him in Albemarle county. I have requested a check in Alleghany county for his death record. In 1910, Martha lives with her daughter Laura V. Melton, still in Clifton Forge, and by 1920, Laura lives alone, so Martha probably died between 1910 and 1920.
Known children of Peter Wade Melton & Martha Irving:
Charles b. 27 June 1854, died between 1860 and 1864
Peter Wade Jr. b. June 1856
John H. b. Sept 1858
Henry b. Sept 1858, died between 1860 and 1870(?)
possible child: James T. Melton, b. 1860, who lives with Charles & Mary Irving (Martha's parents) in 1870 Albemarle county & cannot read or write
Laura V. b. 1861/62
Charles P. b. 29 Dec 1864
Mary A. b. 1866/67
Ida R. b. 1868 (per the 1880 census, but she wasn't listed in the 1870)
Martha A. b. 1870/71
Walter b. Dec 1879

Some interesting points:
Laura V. Melton appears to have had an illegitimate son William W. born May 1883, when Laura was about 21. Although he is not acknowledged as her son, Willie W. lives with her in 1900, 1910, and 1920. It is also possible that Willie is the son of Laura's brother John H. Melton. In 1910, Willie is listed as Laura's "nephew". In 1900, he is a "nephew" to John W. Wingfield, while Laura is a "sister-in-law" and her brother John H. is "brother-in-law" to Mr. Wingfield.
This brings up point #2, which is that John W. Wingfield must have married a daughter of Peter & Martha prior to 1900, and she must have died prior to 1900. Possible candidates for this marriage are Mary A. and Martha A., since Ida Roberta (Bertie) married Joseph J. Walton in 1887. This would be interesting to explore further.

Pierce Wade NEWTON
In the 1850 census, Pearce W. Newton, age 34 (born abt 1816), lives with Asa & Martha Melton Newton. Asa is 29. I believe that Pierce Wade Newton is the brother of Asa J./G. Newton, and further, based solely on the recurrence of the Pierce Wade name, I believe that they are both sons of Nancy Melton Newton and John Newton (married 1808), with Nancy being the daughter of Pierce Wade Melton Sr. If this is true, Asa & Martha were first cousins as well as spouses, since Martha's father Wade Jr. was the brother of Nancy. It would be interesting to locate John Newton's will or probate records to see if he indeed had a son named Pierce Wade Newton Parents: Pierce\Pearce Wade I Melton and Sally.

He was married to Rebecca Duncan in 1818 in Buckingham County, Virginia. Children were: Peter Wade I Melton, Martha J. Melton, Nancy Hartwill Melton, Mary Ann Melton, John F. Melton.

horizontal rule

bullet Pierce\Pearce Wade I Melton was born in 1760. He was born on 8 Mar 1763 in Fluvanna county, Va. or Albemarle, Va.. He died in Mar 1835 in He is in Fluvanna Co., Va. census in 1810, 1820, 1830 -6-. He has reference number 1218.
Peter Wade Melton's parents were Pierce Wade Melton Jr. and Rebecca Duncan. Pierce Wade Melton Jr. was the son of Pierce Wade Melton Sr. and his wife Sally. Pierce Wade Melton Sr. was the son of John Melton and his wife Elizabeth.

Pierce Wade Melton Sr. & Sally ___
Pierce W. Melton Sr. first appears in the Fluvanna personal property tax list in 1792 , along with his brother William. They are both sons of John Melton and his wife Elizabeth (per John's will). Since young men usually appeared in the tax list around the time they came of age and moved out of their parents' house, Pierce was probably about 21 in 1792 and therefore was born about 1771 or a few years earlier. William was probably a year or two younger or older.

Per his will, Pierce Sr. married Sally __, probably about the time he appeared on the tax list, around 1792. There is no record of their marriage in Fluvanna county, so we don't know her last name yet.

A few years after Pierce Sr. came of age, his father John Melton died. John last appeared in the tax list in 1794; in 1795, he was replaced by his wife Elizabeth. John's will was dated 29 Apr 1794 and probated 2 Apr 1795. His will names his wife Elizabeth, sons Pearce Wade, William, and John, and a daughter Elizabeth. He may have had other daughters, as he mentions "all my daughters" in his will.

The children of Pierce Sr. and Sally were (in no particular order, since I don't know their birthdates):
Pierce Wade Melton Jr. (b. abt 1793 or a few years earlier) married Rebecca Duncan abt 1818
Nancy Melton (b.1787-1793) married John Newton in 1808
Frances (b.1797-1803) married Talton Bugg on 3 Feb 1818
Elizabeth (b.1798-1804) married Samuel Butler on 18 March 1819
Rebecca (b.1803-1809) married Charles Bashaw on 10 Feb 1824

There may have been an additional son Joseph, born abt 1782 or earlier and died in 1830/31. The fact that he died before his father explains why he is not mentioned in his father's will. The reason I think he may have been a son of Pierce Sr. is that Joseph first appeared in the 1803 tax list and Pierce Sr.'s count of white males decreased by one that same year. The only other Melton in the county at that time was William, whose white male count was never above one until 1811. Joseph could also be a younger brother to Pierce Sr., but if so, he was not mentioned in the will of Pierce's father John, so I think it more likely that he was the eldest son of Pierce Sr. If so, then the marriage of Pierce & Sally would be more like 1782 or earlier. This is highly theoretical and needs much more evidence to support it.

Pierce Sr. wrote his will on 20 Nov 1833, probated March 1835 . His will named "beloved wife" Sally Melton, who received his whole real and personal estate; after Sally's death, estate was to be equally divided between "my daughters Nancy Newton, Frances Bugg, and Elizabeth Butler, except 10 acres of land where I now reside which I give to my daughter Rebecca Bashaw". Note that his will does not name his son Pierce W. Jr. because Jr. died before Sr.

bullet Richard Melton was born in 1536 in Stanton-Saint-John, England. He died after 1600 in England -14-. He has reference number 1409. Richard Melton/Milton, son of Henry and Agnes, was a loyal Pappist and throughout his life resisted the efforts to establish the Church of England. After Elizabeth I came to the throne, she strengthened the Church of England by insisting that people of all faiths attend ecumenical services. Attendance was mandatory, and Richard refused and was convicted and fined sixty pounds on two occasions in 1601 as a recusant (a recusand being one who refused to obey an order or law) Richard's wife, Ellen, had apparently been married previously as record shows her as Jeffreys, nee Bradshaw, Caston, Haughton. The name Jeffreys appears twice in the Melton/Milton geology. First, an Ellen Jeffreys had a daughter, Sarah, who became the wife of John (Scriviner) Melton/Milton, and secondly, an Ellen Jeffreys who showed to her son-in-law, John the poet, the Haughton Coat of Arms, shich caused the Milton's to refer to two such designs in their Coat of Arms. In the parish records of ALLHOLLOWS, BREAD STREET, LONDON, there appears this entry: The 22nd of Feb. AD 1610, was buried in this parish Mrs. Ellen J. Jeffries, the mother of Mr. John Melton/Milton's wife. (Ref. 4 page 30) (This is confusing, but I will try to explain my theory. In a previous marriage of Ellen's, Sarah was born, which made her a step sister to John (whom he latter married). Which would mean Richard was previously married and of this marriage were born his four children. Thjere are records in England of a Richard Milton married to Elizabeth Milton.)
Richard Melton was a substantial man reportedly and under-ranger in the Shotover Forest. He is the only person recorded as being a recusant in Oxfordshire. After 1601 here is nothing recorded of Richard. It is believed that he was buried at Stanton-Saint-John. Parents: Henry Melton and Agnes.

He was married to Elizabeth in 1563 in England. Children were: Thomas Melton, John Melton, Henry Melton, Richard Melton.

Willis, Fran
Leak, Walter (added 11-1716)
Land #2 of Richard Melton: Looks like this piece was acquired by William and John Melton, and after 1755 by John's Orphans and William's Orphans. Wiolliam's )rphans were listed with this piece until 1767 when it looks like Joel Melton takes the place of Wm" Orphans. In 1771 Joel's property is divided from the orphans of John either by being absorbed into t new precinct, or by Joel purchasing new land and selling the other piece. More likely, it was just divided into a new precinct. From 9-1715 to 1719 this land was listed in Richard Melton's name along with John White, Edw. Clard, Cha. Fleming, Tho Massey, Wm. Macon and Tho. Bailey. Richard Melton is not listed after 1719.
