Charles Henry and Mary Jane "Dolly" (Moncrief) Autrey

Charles Henry Autrey, fifteenth child of Absalom and Elizabeth (Norris) Autrey, was born 4 April 1850 in the Autrey home, Dubach, Louisiana.  He lived  his entire life in the home where he was born.

Charlie had red hair and fair skin.  He had vision problems from an early age that led to near blindness in his latter years.  When he wS a young man, he went to Arkansas for treatment of his eyes but it was not successfull.

Charlie Henry attended school in the Autrey schoolhouse, which was across the road from the Autrey house.  His brother, James Jackson, was probably his teacher in 1860.

As a young child, Charlie Henry had many relatives who lived near by.  All of his brothers and sisters and their young families lived in the vicinity.  Several of his mother's siblings also lived in the area.  Since he was only ten years old when his mother died, these older members of the family undoubtedly helped to care for him.

He married first Mary Jane "Dolly" Moncrief, daughter of Caleb Jackson and Mary Ann (Knight) Moncrief, 23 November 1873 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.  They were married by T. Sandford, Minister.  His sister, Mattie, and Abraham Reed were married the same day by the above minister.

Mary Jane (Moncrief) Atrey was born 15 January 1848 near Rocky Mount in Meriwether County, Georgia. She was a sister of Georgia Ann Moncrief who married Bird Griffin Autrey.  Her mother died when Mary Jane was less than five years old.  Her father married Mary Owens 8 September 1853 and they moved to Columbia County, Arkansas by 1860.  Her father served in the Confederate Army and after the war, he moved his family to Claiborne parish, Louisiana. Mary Jane died 27 June 1888 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.  She was buried in the Autrey Family Cemetery behind the Autrey home, Dubach, Louisiana.

After Mary Jane's death, Charlie Henry had a large portrait of her copied for each of  his young children.  He did not want them to forget their mother.  The picture belongs to his daughter, Bettie, is in the possession of a descendant.

Charlie Henry was a farmer as were his father and his brothers.  He bought his first ninety acres of land from his brother, Bird Griffin, 26 February 1873.  It was in Section 28 of Union Parish, Louisiana.  On 18 September 1876 he bought 150 acres in Section 28 and 20 acres in Section 21 of Lincoln Parish from the heirs of his mother's estate.  This land included the Autrey home.  There was a provision that Absalom and Kezia Autrey would remain in the house and be taken care of as long as they lived.  On 7 February 1885, Charlie Henry bought land that joined his in Section 28, from the succession of his brother-in-law, John B. L. Mitchell.

In 1897, Charlie Henry deeded seventy acres of land to each of his children, Laura Alice and James Robert, as their inheritance from their mother's estate.  He gave the other two children, Bettie Bush and Mary Pearl, money fro their share of Dolly's estate.

Charles Henry died 26 October 1917 in Dubach, Louisiana.  He was buried beside his first wife in the Autrey Family Cemetery behind the Autrey home, Dubach, Louisiana.

Charles Henry and Willie Joann (Michael) Autrey

Charles Henry Autrey married second Willie Joanna Michael, daughter of James Wilber and Rachel Emmeline (Pyson) Michael 2 January 1889 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.  She was born 15 December 1861 in Carroll County, Georgia.  She died 4 December 1940 in Dubach, Louisiana.  She was buried in the Henry Cemetery, Hico, Louisiana.

Charles Henry and Willie Joanna (Michael) Autrey had four children:  Ema Lucinda, Otha Joanna, Minta Lee, and Dewey.
