Absalom and Elizabeth Autrey and Their Descendants, With a Section on Thomas Norrisby Jeanne McDuff Murphy and Jo Lyon Autrey CHAPTER XIIISYRIA S. AUTREY Syria S. Autrey, eleventh child of Absalom and Elizabeth (Norris) Autrey, was born 14 February 1842 in Perry County, Alabama. Syria Autrey enlisted in the Confederate Army 12 September 1861 at Monroe, Louisiana. He was a Private and later a Corporal in the Second Louisiana Infantry. This regiment fought in the Army of Northern Virginia. He saw action at Warwick Road, Yorkstown, Lee's Mill, Ellison's Mills and Mechanicsburg, Virginia. He fought in the Seven Days Battle near Richmod, Virginia in the summer of 1862 and the Second Battle of Bull Run in August of 1862. He saw action in the Chancellorsville Campaign in May of 1863 and Battles of Winchester, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in June and July of 1863. He fought in the Bristoe Campaign in October 1863 and the Mine Run Campaign in November and December 1863. Syria Autrey was wounded in the hand in the Mine Run Campaign. He was taken to the hospital in Richmond, Virginia. He developed blood poisoning and he died of his wounds 17 January 1864. After the war, a friend of Syria's told Absalom Autrey about his son's death. On the night of his death, Syria begged to have his arm amputated but he was refused.
