"Thomas Francis Simmons and his wife Julia Powell Simmons are buried in Keith
Cemetery. How do I know that? Well, I visited the Keith and located their
headstones. Thomas Francis original headstone was broken but you could still
make out the engravings, "Francis Simmons Died Feb-11-1864 Aged 50 yrs." He went
by the name Francis instead of Thomas. Julia Powell Simmons original headstone
was laying flat on the ground and I could only make out " Julia Simmons" At some
point in time new markers were placed in front of the old stones by descendents
of family. Francis farmed the land directly behind the cemetery but was also a
carpenter by trade. Francis is listed in the 1850 and 1860 IN census for
Jennings County. Francis was of English and Irish descent. He purchased land in
Jennings County on 6-11-1842 ( quoted in Tract Book Page 11 in Jennings County
Library). Francis remarried after Julia died in 1855 to a Mary Stephenson.
Francis and Julia had 7 children Norman, Mariah, Henry, Cordelia, Nancy, Joseph
and Mary Ellen. Cordelia died at 3 months old and Henry at age 13. All others
lived in Jennings or Scott county their adult life. My great-great grandfather
is Joseph. and he is buried in First Marion Baptist Cemetery."
- Mary
