KEITH CEMETERY

Notes from "The Hoosier Journal - Jennings County Special 2" by Naomi Keith Sexton: "Marion Township Kieth cemetery. This cemetery is located in the NE Quarter Section 34, Township 5, Range 7 East. It is on the land that once belonged to Samuel A. and Ibby Keith. On 22 January 1844 they deeded the cemetery to the 'board doing business for the County of Jennings, vis. Allen Hill, Smith Vawter and John Kellar... The lots or rows commence numbering on the West side, and each lot is ten fee wide except lot No. one that is twenty fee wide and lot No. three is thirteen feet 5 inches wide. Each lot runs with the north and south lines 128 feet 10 inches.' 14 lots lng, a line running east and west divides the cemetery equally in half, called the "North half" and the "south half."

'All that part of the south half of the first lot (No. 1) that lies south of the north side of the grave of WILLIAM BOLSER, is for the use of HENRY ALEXANDER BOLSER. (Henry A. and his wife have stones here, but there is no stone for WILLIAM BOLSER, who would have died before Jan. of 1844 - a Bolser researcher wonders if William might have been the brother of Henry A., son of 5th child of Henry and Harriet Ann Bell Bolser who married ca 1803). The remainder of the lots were set off to MASON P. KEITH, SAMUEL A. KEITH, DANIEL LEWIS, DANIEL MURPHY, ELIPHELET GRAVE, DANIEL R. LEWIS, MOSES WILLSON, HARMAN WATTERS, and ZELMON LEWIS, 14 lots in all, 28 half lots, all not above reserved are free for the use of any person to inter their corps, etc.'

Witnesses to the deed were WILLIAM HENDERSON, JOHN PRITCHARD and JOHN WILSON. The cemetery was much extended at a later date. There are many unmarked graves and some field stones. Actually probably more than there are marked graves.

To know who lots belonged to might help identify some of the unmarked gaves. All of the Lewis' buried here belong to DANIEL LEWIS' family. None of the DANIEL R. LEWIS or ZELMON LEWIS families are buried here in identifiable graves unless it could be married daughters of the families. (Loppnow note: she later notes that the exception is Jane Robbins. She is daughter to Daniel R. Lewis. Also, it is believed that Daniel R. Lewis and Zelmon Lewis are buried here. It is believed they are brothers, both uncles to Daniel Lewis, and brother to Daniel's father William B. Lewis who family trad. holds is buried in the Coffee Creek Baptist Church cemetery next to Elizabeth Hall). None of the Murphy's or Watters/Walters familiers are buried here in identifiable graves unless it could be married daughters of the families. While there are Wilson/Willson's buried here, and they may belong to the Moses Willson family, neither Moses nor his wife are buried here in identifiable graves. And last, the wife of Eliphelet Graves and one others Graves have stones, but not Eliphelet, if he is buried here (NOTE: in 2004 I discovered that Eliphelet remarried and moved out of state and his later years were spent with a grown daughter - so it is unlikely that he is here).

We checked this cemetery with a copy found at the Scott Co. Library compiled by Leland P. Langdon, William R. Greear and Carl R. Bogardus, M.D., all of Scott County. We found only an occasional small error or omission. It is therefore in alphabetical order instead of by row. The first two rows, the deeded part of the cemetery are where the Bolser's, Keith's and Lewis' stones are to be found, along with a few others." - Naomi Keith Sexton

"This abandoned (Pioneer) cemetery is located in Marion township, Jennings county, Indiana, about four miles west of Paris Crossing and one-half mile north of the Muscatatuck River. It is in Section 34, Township 5 N, Range 7 E. on a wooded knoll north of the county road and opposite the Humphrey residence (which used to be the home of Samuel Adkins Keith). The cemetery is in a veritable jungle of briers, vines and bushes. There are many sunken graves unmarked. Many stones were resurrected from a covering of earth. And it is said there are three Indian fighters buried here. ---- This cemetery is fenced and has been cleaned since it was copied in July 4, 1970. "

age 44 yr. 9 mos., 16 d.

Nancy Jane Lewis was born October 5th, 1811 probably in Seneca Co. NY. She is sister to Daniel Lewis who is buried in this cemetery. Her daughter, Nancy Jane Keith married Alexander Mayfield. Nancy Jane Keith Mayfield is also buried here.

KEITH, Samuel A. - born 4 Jan. 1786 - died 19 Feb. 1862
(Husband to Isabel "Ibby" Keith)
Notes: Samuel Adkins Keith born in Montgomery County, Maryland. Married Isabel Parks (daughter of James and Jane (BUCHANAN) Parks , Scott County KY on August 21, 1811, 2nd wife was to widow Mrs. Elizabeth (BUCKLES) Wilson on August 6, 1849 at Jennings County IN.

Samuel resided in Bourbon County KY, moved to Jennings Co. IN ca 1815. There are some who believe that Samuel moved to Pike County, MO in 1856 (see Keith book), although if he did it is highly likely he returned as the family is certain he is buried here. Samuel's son George R. went to Pike Co. MO. in early 1830's when his grandfather Richard Keith died there. It is possible he went to protect his father's interest in the estate.  Interestingly, George R. remarried in 1856 so perhaps Samuel went to stay with them during that time, giving rise to the idea he moved there.

Children: Mason Parks Keith, George Rason Keith, Harriet Rice Keith (married Daniel Lewis buried this cemetery), Sarah Jane Keith, Samuel Rannels Keith, James Blare Keith, Richard Hues Keith, Harvey Hamilton Keith (born 23 Feb 1826 died ca 1900, married Julia Carter Hull on 10 Aug 1853), Isabel Keith (born 11 Feb 1828 at Jenning co died ca 1850 married John Hanna on 23 Dec 1849), John Wesley Keith (moved to Manhattan, Kansas), Pleasant Mortimer Keith (Notes from a family sheet placed at Scottsburg Library)

KEITH, Samuel R. consort of Lydia - died 7 Mar. 1875
age 54 years, 7 mo. 19 days.

Note from Naomi Keith Sexton "The Hoosier Journal - Jennings County Special 2:
The Keith Family after careful research erected new monuments about two years ago to our ancestors buried in the Keith Cemetery. One old stone had been broken for several years and patched. Vandals had broken and turned over others. These were all preserved, and new ones erected for Samuel A. Keith, Ibby Keith, Nancy Keith, Levi P. Keith and Samuel R. Keith. We also erected stones for the unmarked graves of others, hereafter given with our authority for doing so:

1) James Keith b 1793 (Correction - per Naomi Keith Sexton James Keith was born 23 Oct. 1791 in Maryland)died 26 Feb. 1882 (death date and burial site from his obituary. It would also be assumed his wife was also buried here.

2) Lucy P. Keith b 1796 died August 1859 (wife to James)

3) Mason Parks Keith 12 June 1812 - 23 Feb. 1879
Dates are from Bible records. Family tradition says he was buried at Keith and next to Nancy's stone (his first wife) we uncovered a base - stone long gone.

4) James B. Keith 18 July 1821 - 19 Dec. 1894 (dates from Bible records)

  • Ebenezer Keith 5 Jan. 1841 - 27 July 1894 (birth from Bible records, death date from county death records.
  • Mariah Keith Carr, 11 Apr. 1843 - 25 July 1902 (birth and death dates from same sources as Ebenezer's.)
  • Family tradition held that Mariah and Ebenezer were bured by their Father, James B. Keith, probably at the Keith cemetery. We found on Mariah's death record that she was buried at Keith. Children of James Blare Keith and Sarah Jane Baker are: +Ebenezer Keith, b. 05 Jan 1841, Jennings County IN, d. 28 Jun 1894. (buried here) +Mariah Keith, b. 11 Apr 1843, d. 25 Jul 1902. (buried here) +Alice Jane (Allie) Keith, b. 05 Jun 1846, d. 07 Nov 1914, Yukon OK. +Elanavan (Layner) Keith, b. 06 Jan 1849, d. 1904. +Harriet Keith, b. 16 Apr 1851, d. 16 Aug 1852. +Martha Helen Keith, b. 03 Jul 1853, d. 12 Oct 1857. +Mary Elizabeth Keith, b. 12 Mar 1856, d. 10 Aug 1897. +Louisa J. Keith, b. 01 Jun 1859. +Laura Keith, b. 03 Sep 1861, d. 15 Apr 1890 married Solomon J. Moore and is buried here.

5) Lydia Keith, wife of Samuel R., 15 Nov. 1818 - 15 Apr. 1904 (dates and place of burial from her death records).
