Martha Phillips

"From Phillips book by Ken & Lucille Phillips (kfillups AT swbell.net)

MARTHA PHILLIPS was born February 12, 1829, daughter of Thomas H. Phillips and Martha Pitts.

Thomas H. Phillips & Martha Pitts were married on Dec. 19, 1816 in Rowan Co., NC and they had 6 children. The family moved to Indiana about 1827. Thomas left Martha about 1829, and he and a woman named Mary took two of his children (Easter & Green Berry) and moved to Illinois & then Missouri. Martha remained in Indiana with the other children, and she was remarried to John Staggs in 1833. I give credit for the majority of information I have on Thomas H. Phillips first marriage and descendants to John Phillips, and also to Ken Phillips (kfillups AT swbell.net)

It's unclear if daughter Martha was born in North Carolina or Indiana. Some census records list Indiana and, judging from where her parents are known to have been, Indiana would seem logical. But Arbuckle descendents, who kept closer contact with Martha and her descendents than the Phillips did, insist she was born in North Carolina. She was an infant when her father left the family. She lived with her mother, who in 1833 married John Stagg. Although Stagg apparently never formally adopted Martha, he seems to have been her informal stepfather, judging by the 1840 census.

On December 30, 1846, Martha and Alexander H. Arbuckle got a marriage license in Jennings County, Indiana. Alex had been born August 18, 1827 and was a brother of John M. Arbuckle, Betsy Phillips' husband. The Rev. Thomas Hill Jr. of the Coffee Creek Baptist Church at Paris Crossing performed the ceremony December 31. Martha was 17, Alex 19.

Alexander "Alex" Arbuckle apparently was a young man who had been in the news not long before becoming a groom. On October 21, 1845, several residents of Jennings County had had such a rousing brawl that they had been arrested for "riot and affray." It's unclear how many participants had been hauled in, but Alexander and Matthew Arbuckle were. Then on March 5, 1846, another fight had broken out, this one involving William Phillips and Fielding Lett, and perhaps the Arbuckles again. Apparently the first fight had led to the second so when the case had come to trial, all had been summoned, plus Samuel Arbuckle and John Fields.

The scant record of the testimony is confusing and never even reveals who fought whom, much less who won. Most of the "rioters" had been fined $4, a whopping amount in those days when such arrests were common. Apparently the Arbuckles' fights must have been uncommon. Considering the dates, one wonders if there might have been a woman behind the fracas.  There are one or two William Phillipses in the area, but their relationship to Martha is unknown. Presumably one William was Martha's uncle and another her cousin. Judging from the ages of some of the others in the fights, Matthew Arbuckle involved probably wasn't Alex' father, but his brother Matthew, who was born in 1823.

The family lived near Paris Crossing in Jennings County and appears in Montgomery township censuses in 1860-80.

Alex Arbuckle's mother, Catherine Smock Arbuckle, 65, lived with the family. The 1870 census shows the family's land worth $3,000 and personal possessions $400. The 1880 census lists Martha's place of birth as North Carolina, her father's as Georgia and her mother's as North Carolina. Considering that her father was born in North Carolina, perhaps Alex or someone besides Martha talked to the census taker.

Alexander Arbuckle  died August 5, 1895. In 1900 Martha lived with son Ellison and his family in Montgomery township, Jennings County, Indiana. The census taker noted that she's had three children, two of whom were still living, and that she could read and write.

Martha lived longest of Thomas Phillips' children; she died in Crothersville in Jackson County of heart and kidney problems at 4:50 a.m. December 28, 1926. She was 97 years, 10 months and 16 days old. She was buried with Alexander Arbuckle, December 30 in the "new" section of the Coffee Creek Baptist Cemetery just west of Paris Crossing. The cemetery was well-kept and the Arbuckles' tombstones were in good condition in the late 1970's. Daughter Elizabeth Esther Deputy of Crothersville provided information for the death certificate; she listed her mother's occupation as "house-work" and accurately identified Martha's parents as Thomas Phillips and Martha Pitts. Mrs. Deputy said both had been born in North Carolina. Mrs. Deputy, who should have known as well as anyone then living, said her mother was born there, too. Mrs. Deputy made a similar entry in her family Bible. Thus, it would appear that Martha (Pitts) Phillips and perhaps husband Tom might have returned to North Carolina temporarily between 1828 and 1829. Myron Phillips reported about 1980: "Aunt Pearl Fisher remembers Aunt Martha Arbuckle well. She remembers when she used to visit Grandpa Riley |Phillips| . . . often, but can't remember her speaking of her mother |the former Martha Pitts|." Myron said his mother, Cammie, "says Grandpa Riley called [Martha Arbuckle) his favorite aunt. . .. Even I can dimly remember her."

"I do not know who the parents of Thomas H. Phillips were. He was born in North Carolina. Thomas was married twice. Martha Pitts was probably the daughter of Samuel Pitts & Elizabeth Jones
Mary was the daughter of unknown. She was born in NC - I do not know her maiden name.

Thomas H. Phillips' first marriage:

Thomas H. Phillips & Martha Pitts Thomas H. Phillips & Martha Pitts were married on Dec. 19, 1816 in Rowan Co., NC and they had 6 children. The family moved to Indiana about 1827. Thomas left Martha about 1929, and he and a woman named Mary took two of his children (Easter & Green Berry) and moved to Illinois & then Missouri. Phillips first marriage and descendants to John Phillips, and also to Ken Phillips (kfillups@swbell.net)

The Children of Thomas H. Phillips & Martha Pitts:

Betsy Phillips Elizabeth "Betsy" Phillips was born on Nov. 15, 1817 in NC. She moved to Indiana with her parents when she was about 10. When she was about 12, her father went west, leaving her with her mother in Jennings County, Indiana. In 1833, her mother married John Stagg. Betsy probably lived with them until she married. Betsy married John M. Arbuckle on Sept. 3, 1835 in Jennings Co., IN and they had 11 children. The family is on the 1850 census of Spencer, Jennings Co., IN. In Jan 1857, Betsy and John Arbuckle moved to a farm near Brownsburg, Hendricks Co., IN. The family is listed on the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Brown Twp., Hendricks Co., IN. John died in 1871 and Betsy lived with some of her sons until her death. She is on the 1880 census of Brown, Hendricks Co., IN. Elizabeth "Betsy" Phillips Arbuckle died on Feb 14, 1891 in Hendricks Co., IN.
Notes for Elizabeth "Betsy" Phillips Arbuckle
John T. Phillips John Thomas Phillips was born Feb. 05, 1819 in NC. His parents moved to Jefferson Co., Indiana when he was about age 7. John's father left his mother about 1829, taking two of his siblings with him - according to family story he also wanted to take John, but John (who was about age 10) jumped off the wagon and ran back to his mother. John worked at a general store in Paris; his poverty was noticed on Christmas 1831 by a farmer named Robert "Robin" Smith. Two days later John became apprenticed to Robin Smith, and went to live with him and his family. The Smith's raised him like a son, and taught him to read and write. John went to visit his father sometime between 1840-1842, but according to family story they were cool to him, and he never went back. John married Emeline Courtney, daughter of Archie Courtney, on Oct 20, 1842. John & Emeline were fervent Methodists. They probably were not tall, as two of their sons were 5'6". Sometime in the 1840's the family moved to Scott Co., IN. They are in Jennings, Scott Co., IN on the 1850 census, and bought land in Scott County in 1854. John's mother died in 1856 and he bought more land at that time. They are listed on the censuses of Jennings, Scott Co, IN in 1850 &1860, and on the censuses of Johnson, Scott Co, IN in 1870 & 1880. John Thomas Phillips died on November 13, 1881. He and Emeline both contracted typhoid while caring for their son Almond & his wife who also had the disease - only Almond survived.
Notes for John Thomas Phillips
Easter Phillips Easter P. Phillips was born in 1820 in NC. Her father took her with him when he left her mother about 1929 and went west with a woman named Mary. The family lived for a few years in IL and Cole Co., MO, but had settled in Greene Co., MO by 1850. Easter married Robert Reed Feaster on December 17, 1835 in Cole Co., MO and they settled in Lawrence Co., MO and had 10 children. The family is listed on the 1850 census of Ozark Twp, Lawrence Co., MO. Robert Feaster died in 1856. Easter is listed on the 1860, 1870 & 1880 censuses of Buck Prairie Twp., Lawrence Co., MO. Easter Phillips died about 1897 in probably Lawrence or Barry Co., MO.
Notes for Easter Phillips Feaster
Isaac Phillips

Isaac Phillips was born in 1826. He is mentioned in no family records but he is identified in Tom's probate documents. He lived in Jennings County, Indiana, with his mother and, judging by the 1840 census, his step-father John Stagg. In He is listed with his mother on the 1850 census of Spencer, Jennings Co., IN, living next door to his sister Elizabeth Phillips Arbuckle and her family. Then, in 1860 he was listed in the Montgomery, Jennings Co., IN census with a young woman named Patience who apparently was his wife. The censuses agree when he was born, but one census lists North Carolina as his place of birth and the other lists Indiana. His parents probably migrated from North Carolina to Indiana in 1826, so perhaps that accounts for the confusion. Jennings County's marriage records don't mention Isaac or Patience. And apparently no Indiana soldier of his name died while serving in the Union army. He probably died or left the area before 1870, although there is a chance that his name is one of the illegible names on Jennings County's sloppy 1870 census. It seems noteworthy that his niece didn't note in her Bible that he had died. Judging from his vague footprints in Jennings, it seems possible that he might have taken an out-of-county bride then, gravitated toward her family. I do not know when or where Isaac Phillips died.
Notes for Isaac Phillips

Green Berry Phillips Green Berry Phillips was born in 1827 in Indiana. In 1829, when he was about 1 year old, his father left his mother to begin a new family, and he took Green Berry & his older sister Easter with him. Green is listed on the 1850 census of Boone Twp., Greene Co., MO with his father & stepmother. Green married Sarah Catherine Grantham on Feb. 27, 1851 and they had one daughter. Sarah died about 1852. Green remarried to Clotilla E. Mulinax on July 08, 1855 in Greene Co., MO, and they had 4 children. Green & Clotilla are listed on the 1860 census of Cass Twp., Greene Co., MO.Green Berry Phillips died May 23, 1866 in Greene Co,. MO. Clotilla Phillips is listed on the 1870 census of Boone Twp., Greene Co., MO.
Notes for Green Berry Phillips
Martha Phillips Martha Phillips was born on February 12, 1828 in IN or NC. At the time her parents were living in Indiana, but family members have indicated she was born in NC. When Martha was an infant her father left her mother & moved west. Her mother remarried in 1833, and Martha lived with her mother & stepfather until her marriage. Martha married Alexander Arbuckle on December 31, 1846 in Jennings Co., IN and they had 3 children. The family lived near Paris Crossing in Jennings County and appears in Montgomery township censuses in 1860-80. Alex' mother, Catherine, 65, lived with the family. The 1880 census lists Martha's place of birth as North Carolina, her father's as Georgia and her mother's as North Carolina. Considering that her father was born in North Carolina, perhaps Alex or someone besides Martha talked to the census taker. Alex died August 5, 1895. In 1900 Martha lived with son Ellison and his family in Montgomery township. The census taker noted that she's had three children, two of whom were still living, and that she could read and write. She is still living with Ellison on the 1910 census of Marion Twp., Jennings Co., IN. I ihave not found her at this time on the 1920 census. Martha Phillips Arbuckle died in Crothersville, Jackson Co., IN on December 28, 1926. She was 97 years, 10 months and 16 days old. She was buried with Alex December 30 in the Coffee Creek Cemetery just west of Paris Crossing.
Notes for Martha Phillips

Thomas H. Phillips' second marriage:

  Thomas H. Phillips & Mary

Thomas H. Phillips left his first wife Martha about 1829 in Indiana, and he and a woman named Mary started a new family. I have not found a marriage record for them or a last name for Mary - I also do not know if there is a divorce record for Thomas H. and his first wife, although she did remarry after he was gone. Thomas took two of his children (Easter & Green Berry) with him when he left. Thomas & Mary had sons born in 1830 & 1832 in IL, and then they moved to MO soon after that. Easter was married in 1835 in Cole Co., MO, and Thomas & Mary had daughters born in MO in 1836 & 1838. Land Patent records show 2 patents granted to Thomas H. Phillips of Cole Co., MO on Jan. 10, 1840, and 2 more patents granted to Thomas H. Phillips of Cooper Co., MO on Nov. 10, 1841. There is a Thomas H. Philips on the 1840 census of Greene Co., MO, and Thomas H. and Mary are listed on the 1850 census of Boone Twp., Greene Co., MO. Thomas H. died in 1854 in Barry Co., MO. There were some legal battles after his death between the heirs from the first and second families. Mary is listed as age 62 on the 1860 census Center Township, Greene Co., MO, living with her married daughter Malinda Mason. On the 1870 census of Davis Township, Caldwell Co., Mo there is an Mary Phillips, age 73 that is listed as being born North Carolina. She is living in a household with Harvey Wright (30), Mary (28), Francis S. (3), and Mary M. (1). Also living in the same household is Celia Sheets (64), also born North Carolina. Harvey & Mary born Indiana. Francis and Mary M. born Missouri. This may be the same Mary, but it is not confirmed.

The family is on the 1860 census of Ozark Twp., Lawrence Co., MO; they are on the 1861-1863 tax rolls for Lawrence County, on the delinquent tax list in 1866, and are still listed in Ozark Twp on the 1870 census.Annanias Phillips died on August 18, 1873 in Lawrence Co., MO from fumes in a well he was digging - at the time their children were ages 6 to 19. Delia Ann died in August of 1879 of dysentery. She is listed on the 1880 Mortality Schedule for Buck Prairie Twp, Aurora, Lawrence Co., MO as (no name given) Phillips (female) age 43. Brown on Oct 17, 1858 in Lawrence Co., MO and they had at least 5 children. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Ozark Twp., Lawrence Co., MO. Based on birth places of their children, the family moved from Missouri to Arkansas sometime between 1873 to 1877. Mary Jane Phillips Brown probably died between 1877 to 1879 in AR. Malinda married Nathaniel Mason on March 04, 1859 in MO and they had 4 or 5 children. The family is listed on the 1860 census of Center Twp., and the 1870 census of Cass Twp., both in Greene Co., MO. (In 1860 Malinda's mother & brother Amos are also living with them.) In 1880 the family is living in North Springfield, Greene Co., MO. Malinda remarried to Jennings. She is listed as Malinda Jennings on the 1900 census of N. Campbell Twp. Springfield, Greene Co., MO with son Valentine Mason. At that time she is listed as being widowed & having 4 births with 4 surviving children. I do not know when or where Malinda Phillips Mason Jennings died, but it was after 1900, probably in Greene Co., MO.
Notes for Malinda Phillips Mason Jennings

Amos Phillips Amos Thomas Phillips was born on March 26, 1844 in Greene Co., MO. He is listed with his parents at age 6 on the 1850 census of Boone Twp., Greene Co., MO. His father died in 1854 when he was about age 10, and he and his mother are living with his married sister Malinda Phillips Mason & her family on the 1860 census of Center Twp., Greene Co., MO. Amos married Susan C. Coble on March 18, 1863 in Greene Co., MO and they had 7 children. The family is listed on the 1870 census of Ozark Twp, Lawrence Co., MO - Amos' name is mistakenly listed as Annias T. Phillips (his brother Annanias, also listed as Annias T., is living in the same town.) The family is on the 1880, 1900, 1910 & 1920 censuses of Cass Township, Greene Co., MO. Amos Thomas Phillips died on Feb. 8 1926 in Polk Co., MO. The death certificate lists cause of death as influenza. Susan Phillips was the informant; she put "don't know" for the names of Amos' parents. Susan's address at that time is listed as Flemington, MO. Amos is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Fielding Lett
Fielding Lett's lived well into the 1900's and died at 98. In 1827, he had come as a youth from Owen Co. Ky. He is said to have owned a large tract of land in the "northeastern part of the county," although he eventually lived near Slate, just west of Commiskey in Marion township. He attended Mount Zion Methodist Church. Eventually, he owned a 2,200 acre farm with a fine home and large stock barns. He was the first man to bring mules into southern Indiana and built himself a thriving little industry. He sailed to France to buy registered Percheron horses to bring back. The stock he raised was sold over several adjoining counties and is said to have improved the stock owned by the next generation of farmers.

Rev. Thomas Hill, Jr.

Rev. Thomas Hill, Jr., who had been born in East Tennessee in 1797, had settled in Indiana in 1817. Starting about 1826 or '27, he had become a roving missionary, riding throughout most of the southern counties of the state. He had preached his first sermon at Coffee Creek Baptist Church in early 1823, then about 1836 had succeeded his father as Coffee Creek's pastor.
