Dear Sharlee,
I haven’t done genealogy in about 3 years and just went on the Henry Co. site today to see if anything new had been added. My mother and I first started our hunt in 1971, when her father, Charles Arthur Birge Jr. died. Among his papers was a Birge family chart done in 1907 by a distant relative in St. Louis. My grandfather had never mentioned the chart and we were skeptical as to its authenticity. Fortunately, as you know, the Birge name is unusual (although often misspelled) and we were able to fill in many place and many more names as the years went by. You probably started with a similar chart; most of the people my mother corresponded with usually had. My mother found out much of the Henry Co. information from a local genealogist long before the Henry Co. web site. It greatly increased our knowledge of our direct line of ancestry. My mother died in 1992 and I have sporadically kept up the hunt. Lankford (or Langford) was on our original chart and we found his marriage, but never could connect him any further. Now I know. How I wish my mother was here today to share this information with!!!
My grandfather was the son of Charles Arthur Birge and the grandson of Thomas Franklin Birge and Susan Paulina Martin. Thomas Franklin was the son of the reverend William Birge and Rebecca Young. Susan Paulina was not buried in MO, although her name appears on the tombstone next to her husband and two of her children. She moved with her only living son, Charles Arthur to Indian Territory (Choctaw Nation) and can be found on the 1900 census with Charles, his wife, his son (Charles Arthur Jr.) and his cousin Harry Settles (son of Sarah Birge). My great-grandfather eventually settled in Oklahoma City, with his wife Mary Jane (Polly) Hoar. They had 6 boys and adopted two girls. Susan Paulina never remarried and lived in a little house behind the main house until her death in 1936. I was named for her. Charles Arthur’s uncle, Albert was married to Lucy A. Martin, who was Susan Paulina’s sister. Lucy and Susan’s parents, William and Martha C. Kirk, came to Henry Co. from McDonough Co., IL in 1956 and I can trace the Martins and the Kirks back to VA in the 1700’s.
Your site information on Lankford helps put together many pieces of the puzzle. I know that my mother corresponded with several descendants of Charles Langford, but she only give them information on Williams line.
I’d love to hear from you and will give information on my line if you wish. I am in the middle of remodeling my kitchen and bathrooms, so forgive me if I don’t get all the information together right away. Thank you for sharing your information on the web. You have made my day!

Clinton MO - John William Birge died April 28, 1903 in Blairstown. Born in Marion
County, Illinois March 20, 1855, moved with his parents to Missouri in 1866 and lived here
ever since, except for two years in Kansas City; joined the Christian church at 16, married
Sarah Daniel Dec. 24, 1874; parents of one child, a daughter, who is living. His father Wm.
Birge, was a minister of the Christian church and was 64 when he died. His mother is 80; one
brother and four sisters are living; two brothers and one sister are dead. He came to
Blairstown Sept. 24, 1884 and opened the station and was agent for 11 years. He was a Mason
and members of that order buried him. A man of an honest, upright character, he had been in
failing health since last summer, caused by a growing tumor. On Monday morning, the day
previous to his death, Dr. Murray of Holden, Drs. Britts and Haire of Clinton, and Dr. Carey
performed an operation and removed the tumor, which was about as large as a half gallon cup.
The shock was too much for his weakened condition and he had to succumb to the inevitable.
Shown on the June 2 1900 census...besides John, Sarah and Nellie. The last name has
been written over. Ancestry.com has picked the name up as Berge, Perl lee, son in law born

HARRISON, James M.
source: 1883 History of Henry Missouri , National Historical Co., pg: 734
--- Judge James M. Harrison was born in Mason County, West Virginia, May 24, 1831.
His father was William H. Harrison, and his mother's maiden name was Esther Allen, both of
old Virginia families. She died in 1854, but the former is residing on the old home farm in
Western Virginia. He is a hale old gentleman of seventy-four years, and is living with his third
wife. James was the second of eleven children, six of whom are living, two besides himself in
Missouri, Caroline, (wife of William A. Pfost) and Virginia, (wife of James Porter.) He grew to
manhood on his father's farm, and in his twenty-first year was married, January 10, 1852, to
Miss Esther Fisher, of Virginia. In 1856 they came to Missouri and settled near Calhoun,
where they lived on the "Draper Farm" two years, moving thence in 1858 to his present home.
He entered 160 acres of land and bought more as his means would allow, and his farm now
contains about 700 acres of fine land suitable for stock growing or agriculture. Mr. Harrison is
one of the substantial farmers of the county, and was chosen at the recent election judge of
the county court, for the second district. During the war he served about six months with
Price. and participated in the action at Drywood, and was also at the capture of Lexington. He
afterward served in the state militia, and was at Sedalia at the time of the raid upon that place.
In 1876, having suffered from poor health for some time, he went to California and spent one
season in the mountains. Recuperating his failing health he has since devoted his attention to
the duties of the farm. Judge Harrison lost his wife on the 5th of December, 1877. She left
four children: Mary Elizabeth, (wife of John W. Wagner), John W., (whose wife is Anna
Rutlege), James H., (who married Mattie Birge) and Mordecia A. January 2, 1881, he married
Miss Margaret P. Green. They have one child, Clement J.

BIRGE, William H.
b: Apr 21 1868, Henry Co, MO
d: Oct 19 1902, Henry Co, MO
Clinton MO, Nov 1 1902 - William H. Birge was born of Wm. and Rebecca Birge, April 21,
1868. He was the son of a Christian minister. When he was about 5, his family moved from
Leesville to LaDue. Here he grew to manhood and by patience and perseverance he learned
telegraphy and the business of a railway office. He was intrusted, when about 18 or 19, with
the duties and responsibilities of such an office, first at Blairstown, then at Osceola,
Harrisonville, Lowry, Brownington, Belton, Brownington again and Peculiar, which was his last
post of duty. When he was about 20, he married Miss Mattie McCormack. One child, Miss
Edna K., who is a bright girl and of a good demeanor. When she was seven months old her
mother, on a trip to Warrensburg, sickened and died and was buried there. Afterward, Mr.
Birge married Miss Mary Noble. They had two girls and a boy. These children are buried at
LaDue and their mother went to Independence to stay while her husband was in the hospital
in Kansas City and there she died of consumption and was buried. He was married to Miss
Clara Maud Rust, a girl of one of Cass County's best families, Sunday, Sept. 28, 1902 at 7
p.m. This married life was short, lacking about four hours of only three weeks. He was taken
dangerously sick on Tuesday night of October 14 and died the following Sunday, 3 p.m.,
October 19, 1902. From the beginning of his sickness, he had but little or no hope of his
recovery and was rational to the last moment. When he was told that it would be about an
hour 'til the train would be due on which he expected his brothers and mother, he said, "They
will be too late." A little later he took hold of one of his wife's hands with one of his, saying,
"don't leave me. This is on the square." And a little later he said to his wife, "Goodbye, Clara.
Meet me in heaven." In less than five minutes, he was beyond the things of time and sense. I
believe Bro. Birge, a member of the M.E. church, South, is at rest, a Christian man. He led the
prayer meeting several times and would pray in public. He leaves a wife, a daughter, a sister
and two brothers in tears. I respectfully commend his wife and daughter to the care and
worthy confidence of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. - R. G. Flummer

Old Settler Passes
- Last Thursday, another one of our old
residents passed on to meet her helpmate and children who preceded her to the Great
Beyond. In the death of Mrs. Nellie (Birge) Gallihugh, Blairstown has lost a most estimable
citizen, the Government one of its most efficient officers and the family a kind and loyal
mother. With her duties as postmistress, she had little time to devote to social duties, but to
the best of her opportunities, answered calls for aid in distress. Funeral services were held
Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church and notwithstanding the inclement weather a
large number of old-time friends were present. Rev. A. S. Humphrey, her pastor, officiated.
The remains were interred in the Blairstown cemetery, beside those she loved in life. Nellie
Birge was born in LaDue, Mo., April 23rd, 1876, and passed away at her home in Blairstown
May 8th, 1930, at the age of 54 years and 15 days. At the age of 13, Nellie drew her first pay
check as station agent and telegraph operator. Form that time practically all her life was spent
in work either as station agent, postmaster or homemaker. She had been a resident of
Blairstown for 39 years, 17 years of that time being spent as a servant of the Government as
postmistress. Blairstown Christian church was organized in 1893, or the first year Nellie lived
in Blairstown. She became one of the first members of that organization and through her
efforts helped to build that edifice. She remained a faithful member and diligent worker as
long as that organization existed. In November 1924, with her husband, she became a
