I have to say here, I could not figure out why we weren't finding Cooweescoowee District in the early years, well, Many Thanks to Craig County Oklahoma Gen Web, Short History of Craig County for this very helpful information.

Here I am!

Here I am at the big Totem Pole near Foyil in Eastern Oklahoma.

Descendants of CAPTAIN/JUDGE JAMES BROWN

Generation No. 1

According to Dr. Emmet Starr, Alexander Brown was married to Quatie Conrad and they were the parents of John Lucien Brown. Well, after searching for years on the proof of Alexander Brown and Quatie Conrad, it is hard to switch gears even now after finding new evidence that James Brown was husband of Quatie Conrad and parents of John Lucien Brown. But, going to follow the evidence.. With the help of three of my cousins;
Conrad Fornia, Jon May and Jack Baker.

********

1. JAMES BROWN son of ALEXANDER BROWN born 1765/1767 (1/2 blood) and NANNIE BROOM (full blood) d/o CHIEF BROOM, OF BROOMTOWN. James was born 1779 in Cherokee Nation East Georgia, and died 1863 in a federal camp near Bentonville, Arkansas at about age 84 (Civil War). He married QUATIE CONRAD Abt. 1810 in Cherokee Nation East, daughter of HAMILTON "GUN ROD" CONRAD and ONAI. She was born Abt. 1790 in Cherokee Nation, East Georgia and died Cherokee Nation West.

SHARLEE'S CHEROKEE HERITAGE SITE PAGE 2 CONRAD

John Lucien Brown's parents were Quatie Conrad, a half blood Cherokee and James Brown, a 3/4 or full blood Cherokee

who was a Major in the 1814 Creek War under General Andrew Jackson, received a military bounty land warrant for his service, received one of the 1819 reservations of 640 acres, was one of the first members of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation and one of the principal leaders of the nation from the 1820's to the 1860's. John Lucien and many other Cherokee joined the confederacy in the Civil War. James and Chief Ross supported the North. James died in 1863, at a federal camp near Bentonville, Arkansas. John Lucien Brown had 9 natural and 3 adopted children, and at least 6 half siblings. Source: Conrad Fornia

Notes for JAMES BROWN:
Catharine and her brother David Brown, esteemed Christian converts and missionaries to the Cherokee (and niece/nephew of Col Dick Brown), were involved with the school at Brainerd at this time as was their father John Brown of Creek Path. Brainerd, Creek Path and the area where James had his farm and toll road were all within about 50 miles of each other.

****
In Nov 1822, he and Samuel Canda were "permitted and authorized to open and keep in good repair, the old road from Lowry's Ferry on the Tennessee River, by way of Nickojack, through the Narrows and on by Canda's, as far as the Lookout Mountain and to assist Hicks & Co. in working over the mountain, and to establish a turnpike gate on the same."

****
There is another almost illegible page for James Brown in Tennessee, who appeared to be even more prosperous. From the Federal Archives in Atlanta in the early 1990's found my Conrad Fornia.
James Brown of Chickamauga County had 14 each male and female slaves.
Hair Conrad of Chickamauga County had 1 male and 6 female slaves.

Source: Conrad Fornia. "If you found this web page and you are looking for the Alexander Brown listed on the Cherokee census of 1835, this may save you some time. Emmett Starr made a few small errors in his genealogy of 38 prominent Cherokee Families that were published in his 1921 history book. The Alexander Brown mistake was first published in Dawes Commission Ap#20199 in 1908, which claimed thru "Alexander's" cousin James Hair so the "Alexander" reference went unchallenged.

The FCT 'Dawes' Commission questioned the following extensively about Alexander & James Brown and who the father of John Lucien Brown was: John Lucien Brown's children Julia Chaney and Louis Brown; John Lucien Brown's grandchildren Sadie Farbro and Jennie Morris; his nephew's George Brown and Perry Ross; his cousin JR Price and friend Robert Webber. All knew of Jim or James Brown as father or uncle to John, none knew anything about an Alexander Brown. The Court of Claims concluded that the primary source of John Lucien Brown's Cherokee Blood was Judge James Brown of Talaquah, #45 on the Skin Bayou district Drennen Roll of 1851. They determined that the Alexander Brown as mentioned in Starr's genealogy was not John Lucien Brown's father. See Aps#35, 4520, 6242 & 19194.

(Note: It was unusual for the Commission to question an applicant about their grandparents. The standard of proof was whether the applicant or the parent was listed on the Drennen or Chapman Roll. But the Commission had Emmet Star's story of the parents of John Lucien Brown and numerous claims that cited John Lucien's father as their source for 'Eastern Cherokee Blood' thru John's purported siblings. The answer to this question was the basis for some of the 'Special Case 35' decisions. See Ap #35. The question was further complicated by the appearance that John's father had a number of children with his slaves. This may have been embarrassing to some members of the family, making him the black sheep uncle rather than acknowledged patriarch of the family.)

Now to Alexander Brown:
I have found references to two Alexander Browns who could have been living on the Oostanollah river in 1835 in the region now Georgia. The first was likely the cousin of the John Brown of Creek Path (see below). This Alexander Brown was registered on the Emigration and Reservation Rolls of 1817 and acted as interpreter and witness to the 1833 Treaties of the US government with the Creeks and Cherokees. This Alexander Brown was identified by Starr in one of his early notes as the father of Judge James Brown who was born c1779. He was also identified as the father of Judge James Brown, and living in the Cherokee Nation East in 1835, by his great granddaughter Jennie Morris in an affidavit in 1906.

The second Alexander Brown was one of the last son's of John Brown of Creek Path who died about 1826 and who's son John Brown Jr died about 1822 according to another son David Brown in his memoir for his sister Catharine Brown. The younger John Brown was in the company of his nephew John Brown, son of Col Richard Brown and successor to Chief John Jolly, between 1828 and the 1840's when they led the Treaty Party first to Oklahoma Territory and then to Texas after the Removal brought the rest of the Cherokee Nation to the west.

James Brown was identified as brother-in-law to Chief John Ross in Moulton's Biography. Quatie Brown Ross was born in Paint Town in 1791 per Moulton. James was probably born about the same time and in the same location although Starr put's his birth in 1779 without a location. Starr was collecting his info in the 1890's. James was listed on the 1852 Drennen Roll. Hopefully there is an age list there. Alexander left for Virginia shortly after Quatie was born. He started a new life, marrying Violet Barton b c1776 on 2/20/1797 at Bedford Co., VA. He and Violet raised 10 children. In 1817 he decided to reclaim his Cherokee heritage and applied for the land being allocated by the government. About 1820 he moved his family to a plantation on the Oostanolah river in north Georgia where they lived until gold was found in the area. In 1835 he accepted a government offer to vacate his land and moved again, this time to Missouri. In 1835, when the census was taken his family, including six of his children who had families of their own, were living as white people. When he moved to MO, they all went together.

According to the descendents of his second family, Alexander Brown was born between 1765 and 1767. His father was named Alexander Brown, b c1737. His mother was Sarah, daughter of Chief Dragging Canoe. If that is true, and there is likely no way to prove it, Alexander would have been a second cousin to John Brown of Creek Path b c1761 who has been identified as a son of Chief Oconostota (brother of Dragging Canoe). Neither John or Alexander ever learned to write. Alexander's son James was the first Judge of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation when it was formed c1822. John's son Col. Richard Brown served with distinction in the Creek War of 1814 and his children Catharine and David served with distinction as Christian missionaries. James sent at least one of his children to the same missionary school that Catharine and David attended. John named his youngest son Alexander. Alexander named his youngest son John."

Per Dr. Starr, pg 51/52, recorded @ New Echota, 10/13/1826: John Ross, James Brown , John Benge (both husbands of Quatie Conrad) are among nominees, Charles R Hicks, Archibald Fields (another husband of Quatie Conrad) & Leonard Hicks are in charge of the election in the 1st precinct in Chicamauga District. James Lowery & Robert Vann were in charge in the 2nd precinct. 3rd precinct Joseph Coodey, William S. Coodey and Robert Fields in charge. George Lowery, Andrew Ross, David Vann, David Brown (c1802-1828) and John Brown are among the nominees in Chattanooga district, with election to be held in Creek Path valley, Geo Lowery Jr, Clerk. Nominees in Coosawaytee District included Elias Boudinot, Joseph Vann, John Ridge, William Hicks and Stand Watie was a clerk. Nominees in Amohee District included The Hair (Quatie Conrad's brother), Lewis Ross, George & Thomas Fields, with John & Ezekiel Fields and T.W. Ross among the clerks.

*****
Per Moulton: pg 37; In 1828, John Ross was elected Principle Chief over William Hicks 34 to 6, Geo., Lowery was elected assistant Principle Chief and Major Ridge was elected Counselor under the new Constitution. Richard Taylor, Edward Gunter and Wm., Shorey Coody were appointed delgates to Washington. Lowery was still assistant Principle Chief in 1839 during the negotiations over union with the westerners. (He was acting Principle Chief in 1846, trying to make peace with the Old Settlers per "Cherokee Cavaliers" pg 25.), 10/24/1823, Charles Hicks, Chief, appoints John Ross, Major Ridge, Elijah Hicks and George Lowery delgates to Washington. pg 228, note 1; Ross, Edward Gunter, Richard Taylor, James Brown, Samual Gunter, Elijah Hicks, 1837, delgates to Washington.

*****
In 1837 James Brown served as a delegate to Washington DC assisting his brother-in-law John Ross in a last ditch effort to prevent the removal.

****
In 1838/39 he was leader of detachment #9 on the Trail of Tears.

Dr. Starr, pg 103 has the list of groups of emmigrants on the Trail of Tears: Hair Conrad , Elijah Hicks, George Hicks, Richard Taylor , John Benge and James Brown are listed among the leaders of the 13 groups. James' group started 9/10/1838, arrived 3/5/1839, spending 177 days on the road, started with 745 people, recorded 3 births and 34 deaths.

Application #19194 was by Julia Chaney and included her 5 youngest children. She claims through her father John Brown #531 Saline (1852 Drennen Roll) and her grandfather James Brown #45 Skin Bayou (1852 Drennen Roll) . Her claim was supported by the following testimony:

*****
1. Application #31787: My name is Sadie Farbro. My age is 36 years. I live at Childers, this county. Was born and raised there. I claim Cherokee Indian blood. I was enrolled in 1886 by the Dawes Commission, Roll #10848. My mother was on the 1880 roll, #10495. I claim through my mother, Julia Cheney, or Pinkey Cheney. My mother is 51 years old. She gets her blood through her father John Brown; Chewy is his indian name. He always lived in the nation in Georgia. He was born in Georgia. He came when the soldiers moved the Cherokees here in 1835-6. They never associated with any other tribe of indians. My mother's father had one sister and one half brother, Houston Benge and Jennie Ross. Ross being her married name. I do not know her maiden name. John Brown lived in the Coo-wee-scoo-ee District, but in the early days lived in Tahlequah. John Brown has been dead 25 years, maybe 29 years. Signed Sadie Farbro, Nowata, OK. Aug 25 1908.

*****
2. Miscellaneous Testimony; #4081 by J.R. Price in behalf of Julia Chaney: I am 63 years of age and live in Tahlequah, OK. Julia Chaney lives at Coodys Bluff, OK. I know her. My mother was a first cousin to the father of Julia Chaney. She gets her indian blood through her father John Brown who was living in 1851. I do now know if he drew money in 1851. He lived in Saline District at that time. Chu-ee-e-qui (Big Chu-ee) was his indian name. Anderson Benge was a half brother of John Brown and was living in 1851. Jim Brown was John Brown's father. Polly Brown was a sister of John. I don't know the name of Jim Brown's wife. I think John Brown was living with Lizzie or Elizabeth Coody, who was an Old Settler. John at the time was a Sheriff.
They had children Arch, Charlie and Ellen. There was also John, Ocie, Joe and Quaity. The children, Arch, Charlie and Ellen were Lizzie's children before she married John Brown. (See Saline 531 1852 Drennen Roll) and S.B. 45 1852 Drennen Roll. Signed J.R. Price, Tahlequah, OK, Mar 29, 1909.

*****
3. Miscellaneous Testimony; # 4520 Robert Webber being duly sworn in behalf of Jennie Morris, deposes and says: I am about 68 years of age and was born in OK. I know the applicant. She is married now and her name is Holland. I have known the applicant about twenty years. She is 34 years of age. She was born in Ok., in Coo-wee-scoo-wee District. She get her indian blood through her mother. She gets none from her father. Susie or Quatie Martin was the name of applican'ts mother. She is dead. I have known her ever since she was a little girl. If She were living, she would be about 60 years of age. She was probably living in Coo-wee-scoo-wee District in 1851. Never heard her say anything about ever getting any money from the government. Her mother had three brothers, Joe, John (Indian name Cuskey), and Eben. They were older than the applicant's mother. Susie's parents were FULL BLOODS. I know her father well and his name was John Brown. He lived in Saline District when I was a young man. He was living in 1851. I have heard him say that he came from the Eastern States, but I never heard him say at what time he came. He was an emigrant. Have heard his say so. Think John Brown's sister was named Jinnie. John's wife name was Lizzie. BIG-Eye John Brown was the Indian name of grandfather of applicant. ((THIS CANNOT BE S.B.39)) The neighbors of John Brown in 1851 were Dick and Sam Coody. Her mother did not get any money from the goverment in 1851. Elizabeth, the grandmother of claimant, OLD SETTLER, xxxx MONEY. Never heard John Brown say anything about drawing money from the government. I am positive that he was an Emigrant Cherokee. Charles was a brother to Susie, Joe's daughter was named Ellen. John Brown married Norvie Coker and they had a son Louie Brown. He, John was married several times, Elizabeth was his first wife. John Brown was living in Saline District in 1851. He had a brother named Jim. Signed 13 day of March 1909. Robert Webber

George's application was accepted as was that of his brother Perry Ross and sister Abbie Brown. The commission determined that "His grandmother was, Susie Wilcox, nee Brown. She was the mother of Rachel Brown, Polly, James and Thompson Wilcox. Rachel Brown was the mother of Perry. According to Mr. Starr." FCT COMM #15967. The commission also linked this family to John Lucien Brown through his Drennen roll #531 being in sequence with Elijah Hicks who was "head of the preceding group #530."

*****
This basically says that John Lucien Brown, #531 Saline on the Drennen Roll was determined by the Commission to be George's mother's brother. Julia and Sadie Chaney and JR Price all claimed that John Lucien's father was Jim Brown and the Court determined he was Judge James Brown, #45 Skin Bayou on the Drennen Roll. George's mother may not have known who her father was, but she and Polly clearly knew that John Lucien was their brother and that they were related to Judge James Brown. Polly was living with John when the 1880 census was taken. George, Perry and Abbie were raised by their father's families. George and Perry were illiterate. George's father was apparently still alive in 1906. As to the first cousins: Evans could be Eben, Oscar could be Ocie, Sussic could be Sadie and Peggy could mean Quatie.

*****

We know that Quatie Conrad was the mother of John Lucien Brown because it was reported as such to Emmet Starr by Starr's cousins who were cousins to John Lucien Brown through his mother. The story of Jennie Taylor, Onai and Hamilton Conrad was very specific, even though told as a family tradition. Starr didn't say which of his Wolf or Fields cousins told the story but he used it in testimony supporting at least one 1908 Dawes Application.

More About JAMES BROWN:
Fact 1: Some of Starr's early notes named James' parents as Alexander or Archibald Brown and Nancy 'Nannie' Broom, the daughter of chief Broom of Broomtown.

Fact 2: 1814, James Brown was a Captain, then Major in the Creek War of 1814, serving under Col Dick Brown and General Andrew Jackson.

Fact 3: There was no blood relation indicated between Dick Brown and James, but they were both "headmen" of the Cherokee at the time, serving together in the war, and other things make me think they were cousins. James received a military bounty land warrant.

Fact 4: He was a signer of the Chickasaw Treaty of 1816

Fact 5: He was a signer Treaty of 1819 where he was granted a 640 acre parcel

Fact 6: James Brown is mentioned as a District Judge in the records of the Brainerd School in 1822, complaining about his child's coming home from school in a 'lousy' condition.

Fact 7: James was one of the first members of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation and one of the principal leaders of the nation from the 1820's to the 1860's.

NOTE***We think we have solved Question of the Century***

Who IS John Lucien Brown's Father ???

Tuesday, May 30, 2006 We have found a document which should, by any definition, solve the riddle of who the parents of John Lucien Brown were. It is an affidavit from the Commisioner of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C. , dated September 3, 1906, in which is stated by Jennie E. Morris (nee Martin), that her Grandfather was John Lucien Brown. She further states that her Great Grandparents were James and Quatie Brown, and that her Great Great Grandfather was Alexander Brown who was in the Cherokee Nation East in 1835.

On April 29, 2006, I received this e-mail from my cousin, which started the searching for Captain and Judge James Brown. "I do have information to share, however. It is something I have been meaning to tell Sharlee about the father of John Lucien Brown.
I have gotten to know Jack Baker. He is a board member and a Cherokee historian. He is also a descendant of Hair Conrad, which means he is our cousin. He told me that John Lucien Brown's father was not Alexander Brown as identified by Emmet Starr, but was James Brown. He was a member of the Cherokee Supreme Court and is often identified as "Judge" James Brown. He appears to have been a close friend of Chief John Ross and led one of the removal detachments from Georgia in 1838-39. I don't have a copy, but in his Ross biography Dr. Gary E. Moulton states that Ross's first wife, Elizabeth "Quatie" Brown, might have been James's sister. Moulton also edited The Papers of Chief John Ross. In volume two, page 717-18, he writes: Brown, James (1779?-1863). Captain and later major in Creek War, 1813-14, in Gideon Morgan's regiment and received a military bounty land warrant for his service, 1856; signed as Cherokee "headman," 1817; member Committee, 1818-?; del. 1818, 1819, 1836, and 1837; member Supreme Court, 1823-?; head of removal detachment, 1838-39; member Constitutional Convention and signed Constitution, 1839; member Executive Council, 1842, 1853-55, and 1857-61; lived in Sequoyah District, 1850s; d. near Bentonville, Arkansas. I have a copy of "The Diary of Hannah Hicks," which appeared in American Scene, a publication of Tulsa's Gilcrease Museum. I believe it was from volume 13, number 3, 1972. On page 19 she writes from January [?] 1863, "Judge Brown . . . had died at the Federal Camp . . .""

Well this is what started all the changes...............

Notes for ELIZABETH LIZZIE MEADE:

Perhaps this is the appropriate place to speak of Elizabeth; NO one has ever speculated on whether she is white or of mixed blood, that I have ever seen written, yet she is an "OLD SETTLER."

Feb 20 2001 received e-mail from BB Benge (Barbara Benge), "I unfortunately have no idea who Elizabeth Meade parents were, but she was an Old Settler, John Lucien Browns family, was out of Oostenolee River, Georgia, his mother Quatie Conrad was once married to the Wagon Master John Benge, the son of Chief Bob Benge." "Elizabeth Meade's married name was Coody then Brown. She married Archibald Coody, son of Charles Coody and Nellie Riley before 1830. She married John Lucien Brown, son of Alexander Brown and Quatie Conrad, before 1848 at Saline District, Indian Territory. She appears on the Old Settlers Roll 2 as Elizabeth Brown in 1851 at 6, Saline District. She died February 5 1867."

March 12 2001 I sent an e-mail to Barbara Benge Native American Genealogy for clarification on my part. So you are saying Elizabeth Meade Coody and John Lucien Brown married in Indian Territory (Oklahoma)? Barbara's answer, "Yes, she was an Old Settler which means that she traveled to Indian Territory before 1835, her oldest child with Coody was born in 1830, so they (Elizabeth Meade and Coody) traveled together with their children to Indian Territory, she and John Brown would have married in Indian Territory about 1848."

Notes for SARAH JONES:

Julia's mother was Sarah Jones. Not much is known about her. She was from Georgia so she could have been part cherokee though no claim to that effect was ever made.
She was John Lucien's second wife, marrying him sometime after 1855.
Julia was born in 1857. Sarah died on a wagon trail on the way to Texas in 1867, and was buried on the prairie. There is no record of her in either volume of Cherokee Roots, the index of the various rolls. Also, Lizzie WAS on the Old Settler Rolls in 1851 with her children. John had only one family member, Robert Smith, in his Drennen family group #531 SA plus #532 had Polly and Rachel Smith. Lizzie was the Old Settler by first coming out of Cherokee Nation East, wife of Coody. Then John came out on the Trail of Tears. Thus this is why they are showed in different groups..... speculation on my part here....hope someone else has the answer....But, for what ever reason, by at least 1855 Lizzie and John were not together and Sarah was now his wife...

Child of JOHN BROWN and SARAH JONES is:

7. v. JULIA PINKEY BROWN, b. December 23, 1856, OK; d. April 01, 1940.

OBITUARY
Susan Frances Brown (Colbert) was born near Virginia Hill in the Chickasaw Nation; May 4th, 1850 and died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Frank Miller, April 7th , 1917. She was a member of the prominent Colbert family of Southern Oklahoma. She married John B. Brown in 1867. Of this union seven children were born all of whom are dead except Eben, Natha, now Mrs. Frank Miller, and Amos. Mr. And Mrs Brown settled near Chelsea in 1888. Mr Brown who was better know as Cusky Brown was town marshal of Chelsea in the early turbulent times when Chelsea was under the Cherokee nation.
They moved to the Chickasaw Nation about twenty years ago where Mr. Brown died. For the past few years Mrs. Brown made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Miller where she was often surrounded by loving friends and relatives.
So Gently did she live
We scarcely knew
The simple beauty of her
Soul or guess
Save as we felt our
Own lives together grew
Near her own lines
Sweet gentleness

July 17, 2006, John Russell Farrell sent us some pictures of the Coker Cemetery taken back in 1999, where they cleaned the stones and you could read everything.
Shows Died Feb 18, 1879 28 years 10 months 12 days Joseph "C." Brown. The middle initial has always been in question as over the years with the erosion it appeared to be a "G". So with this new information we were able to go back and figure out his date of birth. Saturday April 6, 1850.

Notes for ELIZABETH JANE " BETTY" COX:

March 6, 2000 received Answer from Jim Hicks e-mail jimh@dgsys.com. I did find an interesting entry on the 1880 Cherokee Census... Cooweescoowee District, Cherokee Nation Oklahoma #172 Brown, Elizabeth A-White age 25 born 1855 refused #173 Brown, Sarah E. N-Cher age 2 born 1878

Elizabeth's enrollment was refused because she had re-married to a non-Cherokee citizen, called "Married Out." Sarah is on the 1902 Dawes as Sarah Zelgar with children, Mary, Josie and Elva. These guys were Old Settlers, so there's no Miller application. Jim Hicks

March 10, 2000 received envelope from John Farrell, enclosed; From the

Notes for HENRY ZELGAR:
Per the Cherokee Nation Roll, his name as father was spelled ZEALAR, but his wife Sarah and children were listed as ZELGAR. I have this document given to me by my mother, Doris Malcom Birge.

Henry Zelgar was denied to become part of the Cherokee Nation Feb 28 1902. It also states, "On 1896 Roll as Henry Zeigler. That his father was Fred Zelgar (dead) mother Ella Zelgar (dead) Residence Cooweescoowee Post Office Nowata OK.

They shouldn't have denied him to become part of the Cherokee Nation, as his wife is of Cherokee Blood, and was alive, and they were living together.

I have learned a lot this year, traveling and searching microfilm. We were lucky and found the entire packet of Sarah E. Zelgar Cher 4460. In side was a wealth of information, from births to deaths.
A letter dated October 16, 1900 from Department of the Interior, in the matter of the application of Sarah E. Zelgar for the enrollment of herself, husband and children as Cherokee Citizens; A portion of the bottom of page 1 "Her husband is shown to have married her in accordance with Cherokee law Oct. 30. 1896; he had previously married her in accordance with United States law. He has lived with her ever since they were married and he is identified on the roll of 1896; BUT HIS MARRIAGE IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHEROKEE LAW IS TOO LATE UNDER THE LAW OF 1895 TO PERMIT HIM THE RIGHT OF ENROLLMENT AT THIS TIME. THE APPLICATION THEREFORE, FOR HIS ENROLLMENT IS REJECTED."

FRANK MASON
Frank Mason, president of the Title Abstract Company of Nowata, in which connection he has established for the company a well merited reputation for accuracy, progressiveness and reliability, was born in Monroe county, Ohio, January 18, 1861, and is a son of Dr. George W. and Janet (Park) Mason, both of who were natives of Ohio, the former of Irish descent, while the latter was of Scotch lineage. Their respective families settled in Ohio as pioneers of Monroe county and became identified with the early development and progress of that state. The early home of the Mason family was a log cabin that in years was replaced by a more modern and attractive residence, but the pioneer home still stands as a monument to the labors and spirit of that early generation of the family which was so closely associated with the period of primitive development in the Buckeye state. In the family of Dr. George W. and Janet (Park) Mason there were five sons. Frank Mason, who was the third in order of birth, was reared on his father's farm, aiding in the task of clearing and developing by the public schools of the neighborhood. He was a young man of twenty-two years when he became a candidate for the office of registrar of deeds in Monroe county. Something of his popularity and the confidence reposed in him by his fellow townsmen is indicated in the fact that he easily won over sixteen other candidates. Later he was reelected to the office and continued to fill the position for seven years. It was in August, 1905, that Frank Mason came to Oklahoma and took up his abode at Nowata. Here he organized the first abstract company in the county under the name of the Mason-Park Abstract Company. At a subsequent period this business was consolidated that of the Nowata- Bartlesville Abstract Company under the present name of the Title Abstract Company and today they have the only records in existence that antedate the fire of 1909. This company is one of the best in the state and has made approximately twenty thousand abstracts. The company is capitalized for ten thousand dollars, with Frank Mason as president, and B.G. Dowell as vice president. There is no one who has more intimate and accurate knowledge of property and of realty transfers in this section of the state than has Mr. Mason and from time to time he has made investments in farm property, having some valuable holdings at the present time. On the 22d of October, 1893, Mr. Mason was united in marriage to Miss Oellla Shankland, a native of Ohio, and to them have been born three children: Charles Walter, the eldest son, was born on his father's farm in Monroe county, Ohio, December 11, 1887, and was educated in Grant University at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and in the law department of the Washington and Lee University, from which he graduated in 1911. The following year he was appointed city attorney and in November, 1914, became county attorney of Nowata county. He is now filling the office of judge of the district that includes Nowata and Rogers counties; Ronald S., the second of the family, is engaged in the oil business. F. Claris, the youngest son, is now employed in the Indian Irrigation Service at Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is married and has one child, Ellen Marie. In his political views Frank Mason has always been a stalwart democrat and was chairman of the first democratic county committee of Nowata county, which position he also holds at the present time. He has done much to further the success of his party and he stands loyally as a supporter of all progressive public interests and projects, his aid at times being a very vital force in bringing about desired results in connection with the city's improvement and expansion.

"I'm from Susan Martin nee Brown by her daughter Lizzie Flanders nee Martin. Lizzie had three children before her death in June 3 1901. I am the granddaughter of her youngest, Floyd Flanders, who died Sept 24 1977. He was just a baby when Lizzie died. The story I have about David and Susan is that Susan's father was upset that she married a white man and so they didn't have much to do with her after that. How much of that is true I don't know. David Martin and Susan Martin nee Brown had an older daugher by the name of Jennie. Per the application information for my grandfather and his sisters Jennie Martin's married name was Morris.
