I don't know where the Winchester line of my niece's family came from. The following are all of the details that  I have at this point in time. They seem to have just appeared on the Le Fevre Peninsula in South Australia

If you think you may be connected to this family, I would love to hear from you via email. In the near future, I will be adding pages which deal with the connecting families.

Charles Valentine Winchester
born: c. 1803 somewhere in England or perhaps in Ireland
married: (unknown date)
died: 21 August 1861 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA

I have found very little on this man at this point. Charles married Ann Vonthethoff at some point prior to 1837, but I don't know where. I know who his wife was, but as to where he came from or even how he came to be in Adelaide, I have no idea. I have, however, found him listed as the father of six children and living on Le Fevre Peninsular near Pt Adelaide between 1850 and his death in 1861.

His children were:-

Ann Winchester1838-1913 married Henry William Petrie Vonthethoff
Harriet Winchester 1845-1932 married Donato Liccione/Liccioni
William Winchester 1849-1922 married Sarah Harriet Watson
George Winchester 1850-1862
John Winchester 1851-? married Isabella Adelia Leicester
Richard Winchester 1855-1926 married Jessie Hirst

These are their descendants -

William married Sarah Harriet Watson at Trinity Church, Adelaide in 1871. She was the daughter of Richard Watson and Ann Moon. Sarah died in 1935 and both she and her husband were buried at Terowie cemetery. They had 15 children:

Harriet married Alfred Edward Tonkin at her father's home in Terowie in August 1900. Alfred was the son of Alfred Tonkin and Mary Barnes. They lived at Gladstone and Petersburg (Peterborough) before moving to Prospect. They had 6 children:

William Winchester
born: 9 January 1876 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA
died: 7 April 1957 Daw Park, SA
buried: 8 April 1957 Terowie, SA

William never married to the best of my knowledge. He survived World War I and lived to be 81 years old.

William was a driver with the 32nd Battalion AIF. I found this photo of him with another man Thomas Reid, originally from Kapunda, which was taken at a place called Wardreckques in Belgium. That is William on the left of the photograph. Both men were specialists in driving wagons and caring for the horses they used.

For those who may wish to know something of Australian military uniform, the drivers gear was slightly different from that of an infantryman. The tunic is the same, but the breeches were designed for use in horse riding and driving. They didn't carry web equipment around their waists, but the bandolier over their shoulders and the rest of their equipment is the same, except that they wore leather leggings like a light horseman instead of the  woollen puttees of the infantry.

William Winchester
born: December 1877 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA
died: 4 February 1878 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA

I have a feeling that this William probably had a middle name which was not recorded on his birth certificate, and would, if he had lived, most likely have been known by that name, since his immediate older brother was also named William.

George Winchester
born: December 1877 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA
died: 4 February 1878 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA

My suspicion was carried further when I found the death of this child on the same day as that of William above. I think that there may not have been twins, but more likely just the one child - and that his name was more than likely either William George or George William.

Herbert Richard Winchester
born: 11 January 1879 Le Fevre Peninsula, SA
married: c 1920
died: 16 February 1961 Terowie, SA

Herbert married Bertha May Matthews in about 1920. She was the daughter of George Matthews and Elizabeth Hywood and was born in Terowie in 1886 and died there in 1959. Both Herbert and his wife are buried in the Terowie cemetery. They had at least 1 child:

Jack Morphett Winchester 1921-?

Eva Jane Winchester
born: 30 November 1880 Terowie, SA

Eva married Josiah Hollitt, son of George Hollitt and Mary Ann Ashbury of Bedford Farm, south of Wirrabara in Terowie in 1900. He was born in 1865 and died at Booleroo Centre in 1863. They had 10 children, and thanks to another descendant of this line helping me out, I have quite a bit of information on the Hollitt family, but have only listed their children here:

married: 15 July 1915 Terowie, SA
died: (unknown date)

Ethel married Menotti Lee Carvosso at St John the Baptist church in Terowie in 1915. At first glance one might be excused for thinking that her husband was of Italian extraction, but he wasn't. His ancestry was Cornish. He was a widower when he married Ethel, his first wife (Annie Hall) had passed away in 1905 leaving him with a young family to care for. His lost his little daughter (Annie's child) Mabel Hall Carvosso in 1911 when she was just 8 years old. They lived at Moonta, Kooringa and Peterborough. Ethel and Lee had 4 children together:

Lillian married Thomas Hector MacDonald Lapeyre at the old Registry Office in Edmund Wright House, King William Street, Adelaide in 1913. Thomas came to Victoria from Mauritius with his parents Augustus Lapeyre and Eliza Jane Edwards. I haven't located any children for them at this stage or anything else about their lives. I believe that they probably went to Victoria.

Hilda Frances Winchester

died: 20 June 1955 Terowie, SA

Hilda didn't marry that I know of, but did have one son:

Harry Cecil Winchester
