Marshall Connections


My niece's Marshall ancestors came from England, but I am unsure as to the exact location. Her earliest ancestor to arrive in South Australia did so in 1839 aboard the Singapore. If you think you may be connected to this family, I would love to hear from you via email. I am not 100% sure that I have this family correct. Thomas Marshall born: c. 1811 somewhere in England married: 22 December 1841 Adelaide, SA died: 12 March 1880 Willunga, SA Thomas Marshall arrived in South Australia aboard the ship Singapore in 1839. He was a single man at the time, and married a woman who had arrived with the early settlers, Honour Williams. Honour was the daughter of Thomas Williams and Honor Clift Wallis. She was born in Crowan, Cornwall in 1815 and baptised at Crowan on 7 May 1815. Honour and her parents arrived in South Australia aboard the ill fated Java in 1840. They set up home at Willunga and eventually had a family of 10 children. Their children were:-
John Marshall born: 27 September 1842 Willunga, SA married: c. 1857 died: 15 March 1932 Crystal Brook, SA John married Mary Ann Collins. She was probably known to her family and friends as Ann, as she recorded her name as Ann on the births of 3 of her children and as Mary on the other two. The family seems to have moved about quite a bit, as shown by the birth records of their children:
	Clara Collins Marshall born: 14 May 1858 Willunga, SA married: 5 August 1885 Gawler, SA Clara married Hammond Frank Wells at Gawler in 1885. They had at least four children: Nicholas Hammond Wells 1884-1970 married 1) Edith May Giles and had at least 2 children 2) Phyllis Mavis Blyth (no issue that I know of) Norman Frank Collins Wells 1886-1958 Herbert Victor Wells 1889-1925 Clara Muriel Victoria Wells
	John Henry Marshall born: 11 May 1860 Cockatoo Flat, SA died: 14 December 1875 Gawler West, SA
	William Marshall born: 15 March 1862 Cockatoo Flat, SA married: 4 November 1882, Crafers died: 4 December 1941 Forest Range, SA William married Bessie Lawrence at Trial Hill Farm at Crafers in 1882. She was the daughter of Joseph Lawrence and Elizabeth Haines. Bessie was born on 12 March 1861 at Lyndoch and died at Forest Range on 4 April 1936. They had 6 children:

		Joseph William Marshall born: 17 April 1885 Gawler, SA died: 29 May 1954 Charleston, SA married: 26 February 1913 Brighton, SA John married Beatrice Isabell Lawrence, daughter of Albert Lawrence and Sarah Ann Harper at the Methodist Church in Brighton in 1913. They had 4 children that I know of:- Mervyn Albert Marshall 1914-2000 Gladys Doreen Marshall Roma Joy Marshall Stuart John Marshall Coincidentally, my second husband is descended from this line.

		Eric John Marshall born: 6 September 1894 Charleston, SA married: 25 August 1915 North Adelaide, SA died: (unknown date) Eric married Hilda Mary Mason at the Chapel in Angas College in 1915. Hilda was the daughter of Alfred James Mabbett Mason and Honor Farnham of Lobethal. Hilda was born at Lobethal in 1892 and died at Charleston in 1954. They had at least 7 children: Lorna May Marshall 1915-? married Ralph Tapscott. Alfred William Marshall 1917-1995 married twice but I only know the christian names of his wives - Jean & Ros Leonard John Marshall 1919-? married a woman named Barbara Lawrence Roy Marshall 1921-1992 married Shirley Ada Doreen Marshall 1923-1996 married Robert Henry King (see KING page) my niece's grandmother. 		Florence Valerie Marshall born: 24 December 1896 Charleston, SA married: 24 October 1917 Forest Range, SA died: (unknown date) Florence married Sydney Ernest Pollard, son of Joseph Pollard and Susannah Walker of Mt Barker at Forest Range in 1917. Sydney was born at Mt Barker in 1891 and died at Macclesfield in 1919. I have not yet discovered Florence's death date. They had at least one child: Ernest William Pollard 1918-?
		Albert Norman Marshall born: 20 June 1899 Charleston, SA married: 27 October 1923 Mt Barker, SA died: 2 February 1961 Woodside, SA Albert married Racheal Ruth Pollard, daughter of William Jarvis Pollard and Sarah Jane Natt of Mt Barker, whose cousin married Albert's sister Florence. They had at least two daughters: Muriel Jean Marshall 1924-? Margaret Isabel Marshall 1928-?
		Gwendoline May Marshall born: 23 September 1903 Gawler, SA married: 12 April 1924 Magill, SA died: (unknown date) Gwendoline married William Ernest Ellis at Magill in 1924. William was the son of Thomas Ellis and Olive Thomas and was born at Ashton, SA in 1903. They had 3 children that I know of: Aubrey Ellis 1924-? Robert William Ellis 1926-? Kenneth Laurence Ellis 1927-?
		Kenneth Lawrence Marshall born: 12 January 1906 Forest Range, SA married: 9 September 1928 Maylands, SA died: 15 November 1900 Charleston, SA Kenneth married Pearl Elizabeth Libby at Maylands in 1928. I have not found a birth record in SA for Pearl, but believe her to have been born in about 1906. She died at Charleston on 17 February 1975 and both Pearl and Kenneth are buried in the Charleston cemetery. They had at least three children: Ross Marshall Thelma Marshall Patricia Marshall

	Thomas Marshall born: c 1870 I don't know anything more at this time.
Honor Marshall born: 5 November 1843 Willunga, SA married: 16 October 1862 Willunga, SA died: 8 December 1916 Honor married William Henry Binney at the Wesleyan Chapel in Willunga. They lived at Rocky River in 1881 when Honor's sister married William's brother. Honor and William had no children of their own but did raise the childrend of Charles Jobson and Emma Pitt who both died quite young. Adopted (?) children were:- Mary Ann Jobson 1861-1950 - she kept her original surname and later married George Edwin Vanstone at Rocky River in 1892. George Jobson 1867-1905 - kept his original surname, but when he married in 1890 there are two certificates - one as Binney and one as Jobson - he later became Binney. His wife was Alice Eliza Watson. Agnes Jobson 1869-1947 - became known as Agnes Binney and later married Simon Vere Vanstone at Rocky River in 1896. They also took in Bertha Rose Marshall after her mother died.
William Marshall born: 11 March 1845 Willunga, SA died: 17 June 1881 I don't know anything more at this time.
Mary Marshall born: 29 May 1846 Willunga, SA married: 8 December 1869 Willunga, SA died: (unknown date) Mary married Almond Sara at her father's home at Willunga in 1869. Almond was the son of George Sara and was born in 1846. He died at Pt Pirie in 1908 but I haven't discovered Mary's death details at this stage. Mary and Almond had at least 5 chidren. Sarah Marshall born: 22 January 1848 Willunga, SA married: 9 June 1881 Rocky River, SA died: (unknown date) Sarah married James Binney, a widower and brother of William who married her sister Honor. They were married were married at the home of his brother William in Rocky River in 1881. They had one child. Edgar James Binney 1885-?
Thomas Marshall born: 26 October 1849 Willunga, SA married: 10 August 1875 Willlunga, SA died: 3 March 1909 Pt Pirie, SA Thomas married Susannah Ann Atkinson, daughter of Joseph Atkinson at the Wesleyan Chapel in Willunga in 1875. Sussanah was born in 1851 at Willunga and died in April 1932. They had 9 children: Spencer Hugh Atkinson Marshall 1877-1949 married Lucy Wilkin and had at least 2 children. Thomas Joseph Marshall 1878-1901 - Thomas served in South Africa during the Boer War and unfortunately was killed there. Albert Edward Charles Marshall 1880-1901 - Charles also served in South Africa during the Boer War and was killed at Standerton, South Africa Eleanor Rose Marshall 1882-1951 married Percival Atkins and had three children Edwin Arthur Marshall 1884-1958 married Elizabeth Mary Crawford and had at least two children Edith Augusta Marshall 1886-1899 Florence Alexandra Marshall 1888-1934 married Albert Ernest Miller and had at least four children Beatrice Ann Marshall 1890-1934 married a man named Saint Honor Susanna Marshall 1894-1981 married Frederick William Burfield Miller and had at least four children
Peter Marshall born: 17 June 1851 Willunga, SA married: 3 August 1881 Goolwa, SA died: 2 August 1932 Bordertown, SA Peter married Mary Finlay Graham at the home of Reverend GW Patchell of Goolwa, who also officiated at the ceremony. Mary was born in about 1856 the daughter of Charles Graham and died in 1940. They had nine children:- Charles Graham Marshall 1883-1969 married 1) Selina May Langley and 2)Edna Rose Martin, the daughter of Thomas Martin & Ann Marshall - she was his cousin Thomas George Marshall 1884-? John Finley Marshall 1889-1905 Cecile Maud Marshall 1889-1960 married Cecil Royston Parsons Frederick Stanley Marshall 1889-1915 - killed at Rumancourt, Germany during WW1 and is buried at Vis-en-Artois, Harcout, France Kathleen Mary Marshall 1892-? Ann Marshall born: 16 September 1853 Willunga, SA married: 3 February 1881 Willunga, SA died: 16 April 1923 Willunga, SA Ann married Thomas Martin, son of Thomas Martin, at her father's home in Willunga in 1881. Thomas was born 1854 at Willunga the son of Thomas Martin. He died at Willunga on 28 July 1942. They had ten children:- Ernest Edgar Martin 1882-? Andrew Marshall born: 1 November 1857 Willunga, SA married: 5 September 1883 Bordertown, SA married: 15 November 1900 Gawler, SA died: 3 November 1931 Andrew married Sarah Ann Milne, daughter of David Milne, at the Congregational Church in Bordertown in 1883. Sarah died at Bordertown in 1892. There were six children in this marriage. Andrew moved back to Gawler where he met and married his second wife Clara Eliza Broadbent. Andrew and Clara were married at her brother's home in Gawler in 1900. There were six more children from the second marriage. First marriage children:- Mabel Honor Marshall 1885-1886 Bertha Rose Marshall 1886-1979 raised by Honor Marshall & William Binney - married Clement Louis Crouch and had three children. Eliza Marshall born: 1 November 1857 Willunga, SA married: 18 April 1885 Willunga, SA died: 24 March 1933 Eliza married Edward William Milne, son of David Milne and brother of Sarah who married Eliza's brother Andrew. They were married at the home of W.E. Martin of Willunga in 1885. Eliza died in 1933 and her husband died on 25 July 1912 at Bordertown.
