My niece's Lavington ancestors appear to have originated in the county of Hampshire in England. Just where in Hampshire is not at present known, although I have located some of them in Hartley Westphall in that county.

During my brief research into this family, I located some information that indicates that people of this name were living in Hampshire in the 1300's. In fact a Martin de Lavington was the first rector of St John's church in Baddersley, a small village not far from Hartley Westpall. There is also a village called Lavington which is probably where Martin de Lavington (literally Martin of Lavington) came from.

We begin my niece's Lavington ancestry with a John Lavington and his wife Jane who lived Hartley Westpall in the early 1800's. John was probably born in about 1795, but I have no definite birth date for him. He married a woman named Jane, whose surname I don't know, and I have no detail of their marriage either. But they did have children - well at least one son anyway.

If you think you may be connected to this family, I would love to hear from you via email. In the near future, I will be adding pages which deal with the connecting families.

John Lavington
born: c. 1790 somewhere in Hampshire
married: c 1821 somewhere in Hampshire
died: September 1875 Winchester, HAM

John married a woman named Jane in about 1821. I don't know anything more about them.

Their children were:-

William Lavington was born just before Christmas in 1825 to John and Jane Lavington. At some point in his life before 1849, he migrated to South Australia, but I am yet to identify his means of travel. There are a number of people with similar names arriving prior to 1849, but given that he was a mariner and waterman, it is quite possible that he was a crewman aboard some ship or other and either jumped ship or just decided to stay here.

He met Susan Cummins or Cummings and married her at St Paul's church in Adelaide on 13 December 1849. Susan was the daughter of Michael Cummins or Cummings and Susannah Hunt. During their married lives, William was a storekeeper and the family lived on Le Fevre Peninsula and at Pt Adelaide. They had 7 children.

They had 11 children. I don't know what prompted her move from South Australia to Victoria, but at some point she did, and died there at 120 Noone Street, Clifton Hill in 1915 at the age of 63. I have yet to locate any further details of her life or that of her husband.
