History of Ontario and Durham Counties, Ontario Canada
In 1792 Lieutenant Governor Simcoe divided Upper Canada into nineteen counties for
representational purposes. One of the counties he named after Durham County in Northern
England. The regional Municipality of Durham was incorporated 15 Oct 1973 and consists of
the city of Oshawa, the town of Ajax, the town of Newcastle, the town of Pickering, the town of Whitby, the Township of Brock and the Township of Uxbridge. The new regions includes parts
of the former United counties of Northumberland and Durham, and all of the former County of
Ontario with the exception of Mara and Rama Townships, and a portion of Pickering Township.

1 Jan 1974 the former town of Bowmanville amalgamated with the Village of Newcastle, the Township of Clarke and the Township of Darlington to for the Town of Newcastle. The Township
of Cartwright amalgamated with the Ontario County village of Port Perry, and the Ontario County Townships: Scugog and Reach to form a new Township known as Scugog, which is now part
of the Durham region.

Other Ontario County municipalities, prior to becoming part of the regional municipalities of Durham were reorganized as follows:

The town of Uxbridge amalgamated with the Township of Scott and the Township of Uxbridge to form a new enlarged Township of Uxbridge.

The village of Beaverton and the village of Cannington amalgamated with the Township of Brock
and the Township of Thorah to form the greater Township of Brock.

The village of Pickering amalgamated with the town of Ajax as the town of Ajax.

The Township of Pickering, was made to the Town of Pickering.

The former Ontario County Township of East Whitby became part of the city of Oshawa.

The Province of Ontario was known as Upper Canada. Durham and Ontario Counties were in
the old Districts of Newcastle and Home.
