Ruth was born at Brookville, KS, on July 17, 1913.

She was listed as a daughter in Andrew Youngberg's household on the 1920 Census at Empire Township, Ellsworth Co, KS; Andrew was listed as a farmer, renting. Carl and Reuben were listed as laborers at a wholesale house. Berniece, Ethel, and Ruth were in school. Ruth, Andrew Youngberg's child, resided with Andrew at 841 North Seventh street, at Salina, Saline Co, KS, in June, 1923.

She contracted polio in 1925 (abt) and was paralized for a year before regaining the ability to walk. She said that she and another boy in Salina contracted polio about the same time. His family could afford to put him in an iron lung and her's couldn't; this made her really mad. She later said that she believed that her determination to walk again stemmed from her anger. Sadly, the boy in the iron lung was permanently paralyzed.

Ruth was confirmed at age 14 at Evangelical Mission Church, Salina, Saline Co, KS, on February 26, 1928. Arvid J. Bard, pastor.

She was listed as a sister-in-law in Francis Alexander Neel's household on the 1930 Census at 517 North 13th Street, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

She was a freshman in 1930 at Salina High School, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

She and Tina Maria "Mary" Gunnerson lived in 1931 at 517 N. 13th, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

She graduated from at Salina High School, Salina, Saline Co, KS, on May 25, 1933. Ruth was in the Girl Reserves, the Kodak Club, and the Home-Making Club.

She lived on August 30, 1934 at 135 So. Phillip, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

She was a freshman in 1935 at Marymount College, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

She married Mervin Mitchel Hays at the home of Rev. Arend, Clay Center, KS, on September 9, 1936; According to Ruth Hays "We were married at Clay Center, Kansas at noon. We were quietly married at the home of Rev. Arend with Mrs. Alice Neel, Francis Neel Ida Armstrong & Charles Armstrong the only ones present and the only guests of our wedding party." She and Mervin honeymooned at South Dakota, Minnesota, MI, October 31, 1936 to January 1. Again, according to Ruth "We left the last of October for a wedding trip up to South Dakota, Minneapolis, Minn. and Michigan. We returned to Salina the middle of January '37. Mother went with
us on our trip and we three enjoyed it very much."

She was employed by WPA American Guide Writers Project as a typist in 1937 at Salina, Saline Co, KS. She and Tina Maria "Mary" Gunnerson lived in 1937 at 924 N. 3rd, Salina, Saline Co, KS.

A baby shower in honor of Ruth Julia Martina Youngberg was held at at Salina, Saline Co, KS, on between 1937 and 1943. Given by Mrs. A.L. Cooper and Mrs. Gus Babb.

Ruth was a Kansas Retired School Teachers member and a Business and Professional Women member.

Ruth was a member of First Covenant Church at Salina, Saline Co, KS.

Ruth died on January 10, 1996 at home, Salina, Saline Co, KS, at age 82; cause of death was a heart attack. Her body was interred on January 12, 1996 at Salina, Saline Co, KS. The funeral was held at 11am at First Covenant Church, the Rev. Daniel Pietrzyk officiating. Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery, next to Mervin Hays.
