Benjamin B. Strickler was born in Lancaster Co, PA, on January 22, 1809. Another source states that he was born in Franklin Co, PA, on January 26, 1809. According to Stricklers of Pennsylvania, he could use a tool equally well in either right or left hand, and was a hotelkeeper, farmer and cabinetmaker in Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Strock on February 2, 1831. Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Guildford Township, Franklin Co, PA. Benjamin was a farmer who must have been renting because there is no entry for the value of his real estate (but the census taker did record values for others on the page). Hiram, William, Susan, Franklin, and Mary were in school. Levina was listed as Sarah. There was an Elizabeth Hollinger, age 76, living with the family. He moved in 1854 in Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co, IL. Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co, IL. Benjamin was a farmer who must be renting because there is no record of real estate value. William was a farm laborer. Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census in Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co, IL. Benjamin was a farmer with $15,000 in real estate and $2,000 in personal property. Samuel had attended school within the year. Living with the family were Elizabeth Overman, 15, whom I assume was a servant, and 8 men, 2 clerks, a tin smith, a carpenter, a school teacher, a furniture dealer, and a confectioner, who I assume were boarders. Benjamin was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census in Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co, IL. Benjamin was a retired farmer and Charles was a farmer. Nellie and Frank were in school. Living with the family were Jacob Strickler, 28, a teacher, and Burdin Phillips, 35, listed as Butcher County Jail (since the sheriff lived next door, I'm hoping this means that Phillips was an employee, not an inmate!) Benjamin died on July 4, 1893 in Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co,
IL, at age 84. |
