Henry Shellhorn was born in near Oldtown, Allegany Co, MD, on October 16, 1796. He married Anna Mariah Lore in Somerset Co, PA, in 1817. He moved circa 1830 to Knox Co, OH. Henry was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Union Township, Knox Co, OH. Henry "Sheldon" and "Jerome" were farmers. Edward, Mary and Ann were in school. He moved in 1854 in South Fork of the Nemaha, NE. 2 miles east of DuBois. He was one of first settlers to join a claim club and record his claims to land in Pawnee County. A census listed Henry as head of household in Richardson Co, NE, on November 20, 1854. He was a farmer. The first general election in NE for members of the Legislature and a delegate to Congress, was held on December 12th, 1854. Henry was appointed a judge of the election in precinct 2, Richardson Co. Henry died on May 3, 1855 in Pawnee Co, NE, at age 58. From Andreas' History of Nebraska, 1882:"In the spring
of 1856, a small band of Methodists gathered at the home of Henry Shellhorn,
on South Fork, and listened to the first sermon ever preached in the county,
it being delivered by Rev. David Hart, of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
A class was formed shortly after, consisting of Mrs. Elizabeth Shellhorn,
Gerome Shellhorn and wife, Christian Bobst and wife, and others."
The problem is that Henry had been dead for a year. Either the date is
wrong, or his widow hosted this event. Johnson's history says spring 1855,
then refers to Henry's death as occuring later. |
