James Orice Phetteplace was described as 5 feet, 6 inches with auburn hair, hazel eyes, fair skin at the time of his enlistment in the Civil War.

James was born at Norwich, Chenango Co, NY, on October 5, 1837.

He was probably one of the two free white males, under 5 years old, in Smith Phetteplace's household, on the 1840 Census at Chenango County, NY.

He was listed as a household member living with Smith Phetteplace on the 1850 Census at New Berlin, Chenango, NY.

They moved late 1850 or early 1851 to Bear Creek, Sauk Co, WI.

James was a farmer at Lone Rock, Richland Co, WI, in August, 1861.

He was inducted into the 6th Battalion, Wisconsin Artillary at Lone Rock, Richland Co, WI, on September 9, 1861. He was enlisted by Capt. H. Dillon, originally to have served for 3 years or the duration of the war. James was listed as a private on a muster roll for the 6th Battery, Wisconsin Artillary at Racine, Racine Co, WI, on October 1, 1861.

He married Ann "Hannah" Eliza Moore at Lone Rock, Richland Co, WI, on January 1, 1862.

James was ill at New Madrid, MO, on April 29, 1862. He says he got sick in December 1861, and was pressed to fight anyway. Asst Adjutant General says muster rolls say he was "present for duty" in March and April 1862, then "absent on sick furlough since April 29, 1862" May and June, and "absent without leave" July and August. His discharge certificate says he was discharged July 8, so he must have been discharged from the hospital and his unit didn't get word for a couple of months. He was released from active duty at Madison, WI, on July 8, 1862.

He resided in WI in 1869.

He moved in 1870 to Brown Co, KS.

James Orice and family moved on September 14, 1873 to Smith Co, KS, where they homesteaded a few miles southwest of Smith Center. In 1876 they had a sod house on a hilltop west of Beaver Creek in Corvallis.

A census listed James as head of household at Centre Township, Smith Co, KS, on March 1, 1875. A James Allen, 32, farmer, was also living with the family. The agriculture census said that James had 160 acres, 5 in rye, 10 in spring wheat, and 1/4 acres in Irish potatoes. James was listed as the head of a family on the 1880 Census at Centre Township, Smith Co, KS.

James applied for a military pension at Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, between 1882 and 1898. It appears that he first applied for a pension in 1875. His file includes several further applications and affidavits, including one that says "I am unable to furnish evidence required by Circular No 58 hereto attached other than already sent..." (Affidavit May 7, 1878). By 1898 there appears a form that was sent with his check, so he must have been receiving them. The examiner's report which finally approved him (unfortunately undated, but last data item is 1881) says that he had a disease of the lungs which rendered him 1/2 disabled from 1862 to 1873, 3/4 disabled until 1879, and totally disabled after that.

A census listed James as head of household at Centre Township, Smith Co, KS, in 1885.

A
census listed James as head of household at Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS, in April, 1895. James was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census at Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS. James was a farmer, with his own farm. Winnie was a farm laborer who attended school 6 months of the previous year.

James was listed as a father in Winnie Justin Phetteplace's household on the 1910 Census at Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS.

James was listed as a father in Leonard "Len" Orris Phetteplace's household on the 1920 Census at Harvey Township, Smith Co, KS.

James died on February 9, 1922 at Winnie Phetteplace's house, Athol, Smith Co, KS, at age 84. James' funeral was held on February 10, 1922 in Corvallis, Smith Co, KS. His body was interred circa February 15, 1922 at Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, at Fairview Cemetery.
