Samuel Jackson DeWitt was born in Richardson Co, NE, on September 9, 1859. He was listed as a household member living with Henry J. DeWitt in the 1860 Census in Richardson Co, NE. He married Ida May Shellhorn, daughter of Jacob Balsor Shellhorn and Mary Moore, on October 20, 1881. Samuel got a Receiver's Receipt on November 5, 1887 in Lawn Ridge Township, Cheyenne Co, KS, but there is no record of his having finished the process of getting a land patent. He was listed on the tax roll in Lawn Ridge Township, Cheyenne Co, KS, in 1891. The family moved back to Nebraska in 1891 before the birth of Merle in July. There was a terrible drought in Cheyenne County during the early 1890's which probably forced the family off the land they had intended to buy and back to where they had family. He resided in Chapman, Dickinson Co, KS, in December, 1916. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1920 Census in Chapman, Dickinson Co, KS. Samuel was a clerk in a grocery store. The family was renting. Mary and Florence were both teaching in public schools. He was farmer about 1920 in Saline Co, KS. He moved in 1926 to Salina, Saline Co, KS. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census in 225 South Fourth, Salina, Saline Co, KS. Samuel owned his house, which was worth $2,000. Merle was a nurse, employed, but the industry column is illegible. He and Ida lived in May, 1942 at 534 S. Tenth, Salina, Saline Co, KS. He was a member of the Nazarene church in Salina, Saline Co, KS. He died on May 27, 1942 in at home, Salina, Saline Co, KS,
at age 82. An obituary was published on May 28, 1942 in the Salina Journal
in Salina, Saline Co, KS. Samuel's funeral was held on May 30, 1942 in
Salina, Saline Co, KS. He was buried on May 30, 1942 in Roselawn Memorial
