Harriett Electa Bowen was born in Trumbull Co, OH, on February 29, 1836. She moved circa 1848 in Mercer, PA. She was listed as a household member living with Peleg Bowen on the 1850 Census in Pymatuning Township, Mercer Co, PA. Peleg, Joseph, and Jamy were listed as farmers. Peleg's real estate was valued at $2,700. Jamy, Harriet, Byron, Ralph, Olive and Mary attended school within the year. She married Mitchell E. Hays in Mercer, PA, on April 24, 1855. She was listed as a household member living with Mitchell E. Hays in the 1860 Census in Bellevue Township, Jackson Co, OH. She moved in November, 1877 to 1 mile southeast of town, Smith Centre, Smith Co, KS. (James Hays' obituary says move occurred in 1872. Mitchell's obituary says 1878. Belle's obituary says move occurred when she was 2, which would be in 10/87-10/88 range. Elmer's obituary says July 1877. Ida's obituary says November 23, 1877.) The family came in a covered wagon. Harriett was listed as Mitchell E. Hays's wife on the 1880 Census in Centre Township, Smith Co, KS. She was listed as a resident in Mitchell E. Hays's household in the census report in Centre Township, Smith Co, KS, in 1885. She was listed as a resident in Mitchell E. Hays's household in the census report in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, in 1895. Harriett was listed as Mitchell E. Hays's wife on the 1900 Census in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS. She moved circa 1900 from their farm one mile south of town into Smith Center. She was listed as a resident in Mitchell E. Hays's household in the census report in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS, in 1905. Harriett was listed as Mitchell E. Hays's wife on the 1910 Census in Smith Center, Smith Co, KS. 10, 1916 in Fairview Cemetery. An obituary was published on August 10,
