THOMAS RUFFIN

Thomas Ruffin was born about 1773 in Bertie Co, North Carolina. He was one of four sons of James and Margaret Veale Ruffin who came with them to GA around 1820.

We believe that the father, James, died right after 1820 census in Jones Co. Thomas participated along with his brothers in the Lottery Drawings, and they did win....but we have never established if they actually followed through with the land.

Thomas lived most of his life in Talbot/Upson County and Margaret, his mother, lived to be 80 years old where she appears in the Upson Co, GA census 1850 living with her son, Thomas.

I think that Mary died in Talbot County probably around 1851-2. Thomas needing help with his young children probably moved to Upson County near his brother, William Whitmell Ruffin and his wife, Mary. Because Thomas married a younger woman, Frances, 11 Aug 1853 Upson County, GA . Frances was born in 1830 (according to census record) and was actually younger than her step-son, Jackson, the younger of Mary's children didn't really live with them. Only Thomas, Frances and their two children appear in the Marion Co. 1860 Census in Ft. Perry district.

Ages at death of mother:

Jackson was 24 and probably married. (no record)
William 20 (no record)
King David 17 (married Jan 16, 1857 in Upson County)
Thomas 11 (no record)
Margaret Ann 19 Married A.J. Hand Oct 11, 1855 Upson County
Sarah 13 married July 28, 1858 to Henry J. Harrell Upson County
Mary 9 (lived with sister Margaret in Tallapoosa County by 1860)
James J. 6 (probably lived with Aunt Mary)
Marion 4 (probably lived with Aunt Mary)

There is a Marriage License in 1853 (Upson County) for Thomas V. Ruffin and Frances Bivins. The Marion County 1860 Census shows Thomas V. with Frances living in Fort Perry. Thomas V is 57 and a wheelright with NC as his birthplace. Frances is 30 and they have two children: Cathann 8 and Augustin 6. These two pieces seem to fit exactly with the Thomas V. that we know.

I believe this person may have been the child of Andrew

He is buried in Hand Cemetery at Hall's Chapel Jordan,
Arkansas. Dates on the gravestone are b. July 9, 1861 d.
December 3, 1915.

Andrew J. Hand was in the 34th Regiment Co G of Alabama
Volunteers along with his brother Allen W. Hand. Here is
the list of people I believe are A.
J. Hand's siblings.
Stephen Hand b. abt 1820 (maybe, no proof)
Allen W. Hand b. abt 1822(brother
Betsy Hand b. abt 1833 (maybe, no proof)
Henry Hand b. abt 1831 (maybe, no proof)
Thomas B.Hand b. abt 1828 (maybe, no proof)
Andrew J. Hand b. April 18, 1834
Sarah Hand b. abt 1835 (sister)
John T. Hand b. abt 1844(brother)
Mary Hand b. abt 1845 (sister)
Stephen Hand was bondsman for Henry Hand's marriage in
Alabama.Henry married Juda Mayo in Tallapoosa County,
Alabama Sept. 2, 1855. Apparently the first wife died.

Stephen Hand married Margaret McCoy. Jacob McCoy was
bondsman for the marriage of Andrew J. Hand and Emmeline,
Emmissin, Emerine, Emmerline (Aarons) Hand (I found the
name spelled all of these ways).

Allen Hand married Emmeline Aarons and John Aarons
married Betsy Hand. I don't know where Francis M. Hand
fits in but he married Sarah Ann Prichard December 25,
1860 and Stephen Hand was bondsman. This was in
Tallapoosa County, AL Francis M. Hand was bondsman for
the marriage of Jasper E. Hand and Amanda Prichard
January 4, 1860 in Tallapoosa County, AL. All these
people knew one another and were most likely related. I
just haven't found proof.
LATER NOTE:
I have looked at the 1850 Census for Upson County and he isn't in it. His brother Allen is listed in the household of Stephen Hand. I believe Stephen may be a brother. There was a sister named Sarah and a brother named John. John married Mary Ann Ruffin. She was living with Andrew in Tallapoosa Co. AL in 1860. Sometime between 1860 and 1870 Andrew, John and Sarah moved to Arkansas. Allen died in civil war. I have copies of his records. He was buried in Confederate Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn. His widow, Emmeline Aarons (also found spelled Emmissin, Emmerine, Emmerline) married Andrew after Allen's death. I have a copy of the marriage license. I also know that there were three people named Hand in Columbia Co. GA census in 1820 and 1830. William, Thomas and Henry. Allen was born in Columbia Co. about 1825 according to civil war records I obtained. In 1840 Upson Co census listed Nancy, Thomas, and Henry. Andrew was born in Upson Co in 1834. I think he was Henry's child, but I haven't been able to prove it. I haven't been able to learn the name of Henry's wife.
