Shep Ruffin was in the 18th AL Inf Regt which was mustered into service at Auburn AL (Lee Co) Sept 1861. He was in Co. "H". Capt Shep Ruffin was promoted to Major and was killed at Atlanta, GA July 22, 1864 in Battle of Peachtree Creek.

This is a good opportunity for volunteers -- by enlisting in this company before they are enrolled by the office of the Conscript, they will be freed from conscriptionn and be entitled to the freedom of volunteers. Around 1855, Shep Ruffin Esq was an attorney in Elba (Coffee Co) AL.
He was an Attorney between 1850 and 1860 in Troy, Pike Co, AL "...and in 1850 (James McCaleb Wiley) came to this [Pike] County. He has practiced here in partnership with Messrs. Shep Ruffin and B.B. McCraw". Shep Ruffin practices law with A.W. Stark in Troy, and dissolved the law firm to recruit a volunteer (as opposed to conscripted) military unit for The War
Pike Co Will Bk L pg 578 dated 1861 Shepherd Ruffin gives power of attorney to Joel D. Murphree to act in his stead as Superintendant of Education in Pike County.
Nancy's father, Thomas K. Mullins(Jan 16, 1809 NC - Dec 1885), her mother, Ameilia, and Elizabeth Mullins were charter members of the First Baptist Church organized the third Sunday in April 1850. He had been a deacon before this, so was made a Senior Deacon.
In 1878 Thomas Mullins disapproved of the reed organ which was placed in the First Baptist Church, and organized the Second Baptist Church which stood on the corner of East Walnut Street and North Brundidge Street in Troy. After Mr. Mullin's death in 1886, the church disbanded.

Nancy was daughter of Thomas (Kenan) Kinion Mullins Jan 16, 1809 NC - Dec 1885) and Permelia (Amelia Howard Brockman). Thomas and Amelia married in Green Co, GA, December 9, 1830.Moved to Pike Co 1849. Members of Baptist church in Hephzibah from 1860-1865, then moved membership to Troy, 1st Baptist. After death of Amelia in 1880, he married a widow, Eliza Battle at home of A.A. Raleigh in Eufala Dec 10, 1880 by Rev. W.H. Patterson.

Nan's sister, Martha, married Bailey M. Talbot who commanded Company H, 57th AL Inf Reg. He was also killed in July 1864 at the Battle of Peachtree Creek near Atlanta. There is a wonderful letter from Bailey Talbot to his son that was printed in the 150 years book.
