bd. 1801, North Carolina
dd. aft 1881, Tennessee or Arkansas

& Mrs. Adam JINKS, GGGG Grandmother (~1810 - )
bd. abt 1810, Alabama
m. probably Alabama where first children were born

Notes from: Emma Hathaway EMMAHATH@aol.com Adam born N. C. 1801
Adam was 27 years old when Minton born which tells me there could very well have been other children (born N.C. or Ala.)
Moved to Alabama before 1830 because son Minton born there
Moved to Mississippi between 1837 and 1839 - Martha born Ala. & William born in Mississippi

1830 Census

1830 census - Adam is in Butts Co., Ga.,page 168(Household of Matthew
Jenks)
1 male 10-15 (Minton)
1 male 50-60 (Matthew)
1 female 10-15 ( ?? ) Mary Nancy would have been age 26 1 female 15-20 (Elizabeth age 18)
1 female 20-30 (Martha age 23)

1840 Census

1840 Census Butts Co., Ga, page 182, there is an M. Jinks listed in the Index
for Butts County. Film is dim - unable to read it.

1840 census - Adam & family are in Winston Co.,Mississippi 2 males under 5 (Robert & William) 1 male 30-40 (Adam-father) 2 females under 5 (Martha age 13 & _____,(Missing in 1850) 1 female 5-10 (Matilda age 15 in 1850) 1 female 20-30 (Mother) The two males under 5 would be Robert & William The two females under 5 would be Martha (Age 13 in 1850)&_______,(missing in 1850) The one female 5 to 10 is Matilda (age 15 in 1850) Matilda could be under the category of ages 5-10 and the one missing could be the female who is age 5-10

1850 Census

1850 census - Adam & family are in Winston Co., Mississippi
Adam Jenks, age 47, born N.C.
Wife: Eliza Eaves, age 28, born Georgia
Children: Minton, age 20, born Ala.
Matilda, age 15, born Ala.
Martha, age 13, born Ala.
William, age 11, born Mississippi
Robert, age 9, born "
Ameliza, age 7, born "
Lucinda, age 5, born "
Cemantha, age 3, born "
Minton was not on the 1840 census with this family which could raise a question as to his parentage?

First wife , and presumed mother of children down to Cemantha, died between 1847 and 21 Aug 1848, because Cemantha born 1847 and Adam married again 21 Aug. 1848. to Eliza Eaves.
Eliza is not with family on 1870 or 1880 census after their move to Tennessee. She either is deceased or left family??

Adam is still in Mississippi as of June 21 1857 because he witnessed a marriage then of John Sullivan and Sarah Eaves.

Minton Jenks is still in Mississippi as of 23 August 1857 because he witnessed the marriage of Joseph Sullivan and Tellytillatha Jenks then.

1860 Census

1860 census - not located this family - Can anyone tell me where they are?

1870 Census

1870 census - Adam is in McNairy Co., Tennessee, occupation shoemaker
Adam Jink, age 68, born N. C.
Epsa C., age 28, born Ala.
Children: Nancy, age 9, born Ala.
Rose, age 4, born Tenn.
Julia, age 1, born Tenn.

1880 Census

1880 census - Adam is in McNairy Co., Tennessee
Adam Jink, age 79, born N. C., Occupation: Farmer
Wife, Epsy C., age 39, born Ala.
Children: dau. Nancy E., age 18, born Tenn.
dau. Rosannah, age 14, born Tenn.
dau. Julia C., age 11, born Tenn.
dau. Sally, age 7, born Tenn.

Adam's son Minton married Epsa C. Foster, Winston Co., Mississippi, 13 Dec. 1855. Minton is not on 1870 or 1880 census with family in Tennessee.
Therefore, I conjecture that Minton is probably for sure the father of Nancy, Rose and maybe Julia. However, Sally was born 1873. Someone besides Minton was probably the father of Sally and probably Julia?????

Checked: marriage records for McNairy Co., Tenn. film #0983068, 1861-18?? , found a marriage for one daughter N.E.Jinks to W. H. Wilson 2 Nov. 1881.

I added Mary as a child of Adam without proof of parentage.
Other children could be: Mary Jinks who married Joseph Sullivan, 26 Nov 1848, Noxube Co., Mississippi
Gertrude Jenks, who married S. H. Goetzel, 12 July 1857, Monroe co., Mississippi
Oliver Jinks, who married George Ann Hussey, 5 Sept 1867, Tishomingo, Mississippi.
No record of Adam's death found.
Epsy remarried, 13 Dec. 1884, to W. F. Lane, in St. Francis Co., Ark., therefore, Adam was probably deceased.
One descendant said that he died in Arkansas. Another descendant said that Minton died in Arkansas.

We were told early in life that the Jenks came out of Tennessee where the bloody battle was fought during the Civil War. This was probably Sevier County, Sevierville, Tennessee, battle fought 5 April 1862, at Shiloh Church, Pittsburgh Landing. Since I found them on the Census in McNairy Co. I don't know how this connects. I also have a note to check Hardin Co., Tenn.

Matthew Jenks will mentions sons Isaac, Adam & Minton. Also one gold lot 2nd Section 3rd Dist, 380 #.

1850 Census Butts Co., Ga., page 377, taken 15 Sept
Jinks, Milton, 40, male, white, farmer, 200, NC
Jinks, Mary 31, F, White, Georgia
Jinks, Nancy J., 12, F, White, Ga.
Jinks, William M. 10, male, white, Ga.
Jinks, Harriette E., 6, female, white, Georgia
Jinks, Mary F., 4, female, white, Georgia
(Milton is possibly a misspelling of Minton, )

1860 Census Butts Co., Ga., Jackson P.O., page 70, dwelling 478
Jinks, Minton, 50, male, white farmer, 500, 200, NC
Jinks, Mary, 40, female, white, housewife, Ga.
Jinks, William M., 20, male, white, farm labor, Georgia
Jinks, Mary F., 14, female, white, Georgia

The age of Minton on these two census are wrong for them to be the Minton that is living with Adam Jenks in Mississippi in 1850.
Epsa Catherine Foster - born ca 1838 Winston County, MS; married 13 December 1853 Winston County, MS to Minton J. Jinks, son of Adam Jinks. Originally thought is that Minton was the father of her children, however more recent investigations have proven otherwise. The 1870 Census of McNairy County, Tennessee shows that Epsa Jinks is living with her father-in-law Adam Jinks. However, the 1880 Census of McNairy County shows her living with the same man, only she is listed as "wife" and her daughters are listed as his children. Now my belief is that Epsa first married Minton J. Jinks, son of Adam Jinks. Minton died, or at least the marriage ended, and she remarried to his father Adam Jinks.

Her children are as follows: Nancy E. Jinks - born ca. 1861 MS --pob AL per 1870 census!
Rosannah Jinks - born ca. 1866 TN
Julie Catherine Jinks - born 7 April 1865 (census: ca 1869) TN
Sally Jinks - born 1873 TN
