EARLIEST AMERICAN JENKS/JINKS

Genealogical Records: Early New England Settlers, 1600s-1800s
Guide to the Early Settlers of America, Surnames I-J, Page 286
JENKS: -- Joseph Jenks, Lynn, 1645, blacksmith, employed at the iron works, came a widower, is the tradition of the family, from Hammersmith, or Hounslow, Co. Middlesex, or Colebrook, in the edge of Bucks, near London; had child Joseph, born in England, and perhaps another son that may have gone south, and be the progenitor of the name in N.C.; and by 2nd wife Eliz. who died 1679, had prob. Sarah; certainly Samuel, born at Lynn 1654; Deborah, 1658; John, 1660; and Daniel, 1663; and died 1683. He was an ingenious workman; in 1652 was engaged to cut dies for our coinage, says report; and Boston, 1654, gave power (we find by the record) to its selectmen to contract with him for engines to carry water in case of fire.

A. (?)Unknown Male Jinks (Cumberland Co NC) married to Ann
	Sons: Joseph, Burrell, Mathew, John
Source: Joseph Matthew's willProbate: Jan, 1791

This family should have been listed in 1790 under the Matthews household.
When the ? Jinks died, there should have been something the Court Minutes to provide for the widow from the estate. Guardianship would have been designated for the 4 sons--especially if their father had property.

Idea from Barbara Montgomery:
Ann Jinks Matthews and the father of Joseph, John, Matthew and Burrell Jinks. The idea hit me that perhaps Burrell was her maiden name. I did a search on the LDS website for Ann Burrell and was surprised to find that the majority of the hits in the U.S. were in the Lynn, Massachusetts area where Joseph Jenckes/Jenks/Jinks settled in the mid 1600's. There seems to have been a large Burrell family there at the same time. I did not find a Burrell/Jinks marriage yet but I haven't given up on investigating the idea

State Census for North Carolina, 1784?1787. North Carolina. State Department of Archives and History.Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1971. 2d ed. Norfolk, Va.: n.p., 1971. F258 .N92. (no mention of Jinks/Jenks)

In 1784 the North Carolina General Assembly requested that a list of inhabitants be taken. Age and sex categories for whites and blacks are included. Compliance was slow and apparently incomplete, with some counties not responding until 1786. There is some evidence that another census was conducted in 1787; the so-called 1784?87 state census may be two censuses intermingled.

Extant portions of the 1784?87 state censuses are in Alvaretta K. Register, State Census of North Carolina, 1784?1787, 2d ed., rev. (1971; reprint, Baltimore, Md.: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1978).

Additional portions of the 1784?87 censuses have been located since the Register's publication. See Helen F. M. Leary, comp., "Bertie Co., N.C., 1787 State Census," The North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal 9, no. 1 (February 1983): 32?34.

Those counties do not have ennumerations in the book you mentioned, although Chatham County has a simple has a simple tally of its population given. The NC Taxpayers 1701-1786 and 1679-1790 do not list any Jenks or Jinks, but there are plenty of Jenkins and Jinkins listed.

There was a daughter Estelle born about 1902 listed on the 1910 census. She would have been the daughter of Susanna and Thad.
Sometime between 1902 and Aug 1905 when Thad remarried to Agnes Breazeal Summers, Susanna Henderson Jinks must have died. There are unmarked graves of JINKS in Camp Creek Cemetery where Susanna's parents are buried. Does anyone know for sure if she is buried there?
Do you know where John Thad Jinks is buried or when he died? From rootsweb Union Parish query page, Thelma Jinks, notes that Thad is buried at Camp Creek and that he died Feb 27, 1965.

There is a Thad Ginks on the 1920 census. Anyone know if this is the same man as Thad Jinks? However, none of the information matches up between the two men.

Does anyone know what happened to the children of Susanna Henderson and John Thad Jinks?

KANSAS JINKS

My grandfathers name was Henry L. Jinks born 12 Dec1860-1862? in Missouri (I think, he always just said, "south of the Mason-Dixon line". His obituary says he was also a native of Iowa.
He died 15 March 1951 in El Dorado, Butler County, KS and was buried in Florence, Marion County, KS.
Family records indicated that Henry was a Deputy US Marshall in Oklahoma Territory and served under Marshall Ledbetter on the Cherokee Strip. His grave has a marker that states he was a veteran of the Spanish American War.
He married ( in Mitchell, Rice County, KS 24Oct1908) Olga Wahl born 26July1879 Kovno Provience, Russia and died 9Feb1931 in Florence, Marion County, KS.
They had the following children: Emanuel Henry b. 15March1909 Rice Co, KS; Joseph b. 5Jan1910 Rice Co., KS; Pauline b.2Feb1912 Rice Co, KS; Wilbert Griffith b. 28Nov1913 Rice Co., KS; Albert b. 12Oct1915, Marion Co., KS; Dorothy b. 30 Aug1918 Rice Co., KS; Esther b. 18April1921, Marion Co, KS; Mary ALyce b. 18April1921 Marion Co., KS; and Paul b. 12Oct1924 Marion Co., KS. My father was Wilbert G. Jinks.
Henry L. Jinks listed in the 1910 US Federal Census in Rice County, KS listed as 39 years old and born in MISSOURI.
His obit states that he was born in 1862 in IOWA. If that were the case then he would have to have been 48 in 1910.
In the 1880 US Federal Census for Worth County, Missouri he is listed as the son of Francis M. and Sarah O. Jinks and his age is 9 years and it states that he was born in MISSOURI. This 1880 census would coincide in age with the 1910 census. His grave marker says 1862-1951

My great grandfather Thomas Parks Gray mar Mary E. (Mollie) Hunnicutt daughter of James Spencer Hunnicutt and Martha Jinks daughter of David Jinks and Mary (Polly) Seager. I have a picture of Martha Jinks and of Mary (Polly) Seager (she is very old in this picture). Only thing that I have found on David is that he came from another county in GA before he was in Gwinnett Co
I think that David Jinks was b. abt 1795, and also Polly Seager, Martha Jinks was born abt 1832, she had three children one died at birth (a boy) and she had Mary (Mollie) and James David Hunnicutt (I have pictures of both Mary and James) Mary (Mollie) was born in 1859 and died in 1932 she is bur at Shake Rag Cem. in Forsyth Co GA her grave marker has Mollie Gray on it.

  • Joseph Cagle married Elizabeth Jinks. Joseph's and Elizabeth's children : The females listed are: Nancy Mary, born 1832, Adaline, born 1838, Mary, born 1846, an Laura Judson, born 1848.

I started with my maternal grandmother Martha E. WATKINS b. 6-18-1879 in MO. Married Chas. Stanton in Idaho in 1908 Her parents, according to her death cert. were Wm. J. WATKINS & Mary F. ( Latta) WATKINS. Mary F. WATKINS parents according to her obit. & death cert. were Franklin LATTA and Julia Ann CAGLE.
In the 1840 Henry Co. Georgia census Distr. 30 Joseph Cagle is listed as having one daughter in 0- 5 age and two in the 5 -10 age. They would be Adaline, the youngest female and Julia Ann oldest, then Nancy Mary. Julia was married in 1847 so she never had her name in a census with her parents.
She seems to be forgotten, over looked or just plain ignored and I don't know if that can be changed. I doubt it. But just wanted you to know there was an older daughter of Joseph Cagle & Elizabeth Jinks and she was Julia Ann, widowed in 1866, left with five children still in the home still to raise. By 1880 she had married John Farmer and was living in MO.

Jinks), I have just embarked on the trail of my
fathers relatives, He came from Birmingham UK but i
believe its going to be a bit of a struggle as he is in
his late seventies and can only remember sketchy
details and moved to Hampshire in the 60's, and lost
all contact with his family there. As far as i know it
was something to do with his first wife and he can be
stubborn. He and his family as far as he knows came
from Kings Norton and Colmore area of Birmingham, and
used St Chad's for baptism, birth etc. Below is a list
of the names he can remember,

Sarah Jinks born 1827. Her father was George Jinks. A Collier. Sarah married Thomas Baxter in 1847 in Polesworth.
From the 1851 census I believe that he had died between 1847-1851 Could have been a mining death. I will follow this up His wife was Elizabeth ( Collier widow) and sons at home were George and William. I believe they are the family as there is a Mary Ann Baxter (vist) 3 years with the family. Also the ages match.

My gr-gr-grandmother's sister, Mary CHANDLER JINKS was married to William JINKS in Madison County, Ohio. They migrated to Vermilion County, Illinois where Mary CHANDLER JINKS most probably died in childbirth.

My gr-gr-grandmother, Sarah CHANDLER married Aquilla GARRETT in Vermilion County. For some unknown reason, on their marriage record in Vermilion Co., Aquilla is listed as Aquilla GADD. For the marriage between Sarah CHANDLER and Aquilla GADD, William JINKS attested to Sarah's age and gave his permission. (William JINKS was the brother-in-law to Sarah CHANDLER.)

The Drucilla GARRETT, wife of Marcus, who is buried in the Sodowsky Family cemetery is the mother of Aquilla GARRETT. Drucilla PARKER GARRETT was the daughter of John PARKER and Sarah SANDUSKY (SODOWSKY).

Would love to hear from any JINKS from the Madison County, Ohio or Vermilion/Champaign County, Illinois areas.
