Salina Wilson's Ancestors

Salina Wilson was the first wife of Oscar A. Fenn.  They were married 13 March 1861 in Medina County, Ohio. Salina's family was a bit of a mystery until a kind and helpful lady named Julia found the information in the 1850 and 1860 census.  Alvah Wilson and Annice (or Annis) Bartholomew were both born in New York State, he in 1808, and she, about 1812.  I have received information from new-found cousins thanks to RootsWeb's Wilson list.  See "New Stuff" below.  Below are the 11 children of Alvah & Annis Bartholomew Wilson. The marriage and spouse information was taken from Medina County Probate Court records.

A grandchild named Alice Baker is also listed in the Probate Records, but I don't know anything else about her.   Gail Twining has inquired about Alice and is looking for more information.  If you have any, she would appreciate an email from you.  From the way Alice is listed on that one page Probate Court document, I am speculating she is a daughter of Jane Wilson Sweet.  The "Application to Admit Will to Probate" lists Alice right after Jane.

Thomas, whom I previously mistook for Phinneas, is listed as living in "Elk Point, Dakota Territory in the 1880 census.  Thomas is listed as a Carpenter, wife Mary was born in Iowa of Irish parents, and their children at that time were 5 year-old Katie and 2 year-old George.

Orange,  "O.B. Wilson" in the 1880 Medina Co. census, is listed as a wagon maker.  Wife Olive was born in Ohio and her parents were born in NY.  12 year-old Justin O. and 6 year-old Claire were "at school."  Orange is also in the 1890 special census for Civil War Veterans.  He served in the following unit:  166th Regiment, Ohio Infantry National Guard.  The unit served for 90 days and was disbanded in October 186?.

Alvah Jr. and wife Mary have 6 year-old Anna B. in the 1880 Medina census.  Alvah Jr. 's death record on a file card lists his death from cancer on 25 December 1880.  He is buried in York Cemetery, York Township, along with his parents.

Information from a cousin has Lewis Wilson with first wife Frances, and children Frank, Fred, Edwin, & Herman.  With second wife  Elizabeth Appleton, their children were Olin, Evelyn and Sylvia.

Also, there is a question about the name of Alvah and Annis B.'s first born - Faded ink on the 1850 census makes the name hard to read.  In "The American Genealogist," January 1962,  John G. Hunt's article "Wilson Families of Whitehall, N.Y.,"  lists "Chauncey" as the name of their first child.  He is not listed in the 1860 census and nothing further is known about him.

Salina's death certificate lists her 10 March 1872 passing as being caused by a miscarriage.  She was just 32 years old.

In the 1880 census, 72-year-old Alvah and 68-year-old Annis and their 3-year-old granddaughter Lovina B. (Isabelle) Colby are listed.  She was the daughter of Olive O. and hubby Martin L. Colby.  Olive died one day after Lovina was born in 1876, I'm told.  Martin was born September 1853 in New Hampshire to Elijah S.W. Colby and Mahala Hartford.  He moved to New Hampshire after Olive's death, leaving Lovina to be raised by Alvah & Annis.  Lovina later married Fred McFarland.  Del Colby and Nyla Graham contributed this info about Martin and Lovina, respectively.

I have copies of Probate Court documents relating to Alvah Wilson's death. One document includes names of his children and grandchildren, with their place of residence. This document is an "Application to admit will to Probate," signed by Annis B. Wilson. In various documents, her name is spelled Annis, Annice, Annise, Anice, and Anise.

New Stuff:

Information from cousin Jackie in Virginia notes that Alvah and Annis were married 15 October 1827 in Whitehall, Washington County, N.Y.  Alvah's parents were Thomas Wilson & Rhoda Rhodes, and Annis' father was Thomas Bartholomew (mother unknown).  For more info, see my gedcom.

Notes:

Alvah Wilson died 16 January 1888, at the age of 79.  Annice died 20 March 1895 at age 83. She may have married a second time, on 27 Feb 1889, to Warren Judson.  Alvah, Annis, and  son Alvah Jr. are buried in a cemetery in York Township west of the city of Medina on State Route 18.  They outlived daughter Salina, who is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Stanton, MI.

Salina's daughter Nora (Nona) Anise Fenn's middle name was likely from her Grandmother Annise Bartholomew Wilson.
