| Townships
were created as the west was surveyed about 1833. A township is a 6 by 6
mile area containing 36 square mile areas called sections. Each township is
described as being in a Range East or West of a Principal Meridian and a Township North or
South of a Base Line. Fond du Lac is located in Township 16 North, Range 17 East of
the 4th Principal Meridian. These townships were also given political names.
