Townships were created as the west was surveyed about 1833.  A township is a 6 by 6 mile area containing 36 square mile areas called sections.  Each township is described as being in a Range East or West of a Principal Meridian and a Township North or South of a Base Line.  Fond du Lac is located in Township 16 North, Range 17 East of the 4th Principal Meridian.  These townships were also given political names.  Click on the above map links.
