To manually add a wireless network to the Preferred Networks list:
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Network Connections.
- Click the Wireless Network Connection icon.
- In the Network Tasks panel, click View available wireless
networks.
- In the Related Tasks panel, click Change the order of preferred
networks.
- Click the Add button.
- In the Network name (SSID) field, type a name for the new wireless
network.
- In Network Authentication, click an item in the list. For the
network authentication method, we recommend that you choose Open.
When the open method is combined with a wired equivalent privacy (WEP) network key, all
network traffic is encrypted. If you choose Shared, a network key
is still required, and even if you use a WEP network key, network traffic is not
encrypted, which makes your network more vulnerable to intrusions.
- If this is a security-enabled network, in Data encryption field, select
the encryption method, WEP, otherwise select Disabled.
- If WEP is selected and a WEP key is needed, uncheck the box The key is provided
for me automatically.
- Then type the WEP or COD key in Network key, and in Confirm
network key, retype the same key. This is the 10 digit key that was used
when the network router security was configured.
- If the wireless network that you are adding does not have an access point or a router,
select the This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points
are not used check box. (Usually not checked)
Notes
- All of the above should occur automatically when a new, visible wireless network is
detected with no security.
