This area of the Americas was originally claimed and colonized by several countries.  The colonists became dissatisfied with foreign control.  In 1776 a Declaration of Independence was made and was defended until independence was recognized in 1783.  At this time there were 13 colonies banded as states to a common purpose.  Although there was union disagreement from 1861 through 1865, the United States has expanded and survived to this day.
