Career - I married Sue Martin of Adell, Wisconsin, during college after a three year courtship.  After graduation with a Civil Engineering degree, we moved to Casper, Wyoming.  I had a job with the Bureau of Reclamation building powerlines, power plants, canals, pipelines, visitor centers, and youth camps.  I was then moved to Denver, Colorado to do cost estimating and work on special projects for the Reclamation Commissioner, Congressional committees, and World Bank.  Through my father's influence I developed an interest in art, creative thought, and stories.  Through my Mother's encouragement, I became interested in how things worked and where we came from (genealogy).  I continued my education with master programs in Administration at the Colorado State University and Applied Mathematics at the Colorado School of Mines and acquired registration in Colorado as a Professional Engineer.  I completed my development in Contract Law and finished my professional career administering construction contracts and analyzing project schedules to avoid cost overrun and court costs.

Interests - I have always used computers to simplify my work and write my own software.  Really it was just an enjoyable experience, but I tried to not let that be too widely known.  After "retirement" I worked for the Foothills Bible Church of Littleton, Colorado, for a few years, building and administering their computer network, web sites, technology use, and teaching computer workshops.  I live in Lakewood, Colorado (see web sites below) and help children, adults, and seniors with school and computer problems and try to stimulate an interest in computer solutions.  My other interests include wood carving, writing children's stories, history, exploring the Colorado mountains, traveling across North America, and construction.  We built a cabin at 10,500 feet on a 5-acre mining claim in Gilpin county (the smallest Colorado county).  Gilpin county contains the Central City/Blackhawk mining towns which are now gambling towns.  I can be contacted by mail, phone, and Internet (no cell phone, pager, or FAX - Remember, I am "retired").

Lakewood, Colorado - Out west the history and culture takes on a completely different flavor from Wisconsin.  Jefferson County has the largest school district, a fantastic library system, and the highest concentration of government, education, and technical workers outside Washington, DC.  Yes, I know about Silicone Valley and Seattle, but they are not all in one county.  Lakewood is a city of 140,000 using 43 square miles of foothill approach with a look forward.  The Bureau of Reclamation, which was my career for 31 years, was one of many agencies in a square mile compound known as the Denver Federal Center which originally was the Remmington Rand ammunition plant in W.W.II.

Geography - As you pass through the foothills, you step back in geologic time and see the red rocks amphitheater.  The Denver metropolitan area encompasses many counties and more than a million people (DRCOG) interested in a wide range of activity.  Nearly everyone here is from somewhere else.  This area has experienced the lowest jobless rate in the nation and the fastest recovery from depressed times.  Come visit Colorado and say, "Howdy" which means, "Have a good day and may the winds blow more good will your way".  You can snow-ski, hike, climb, golf, fish, and boat, all on the same day, and enjoy the best weather in the nation.  The air is thin (5,000 to 14,000 feet), so drink lots of water and relax the first day, if you come from near sea level.  Water flows in all directions but West in our area and flows everywhere from the continental divide, just an hour from our home and a 2,000 foot hike from our cabin (vertical, that is).

UPDATE - A new name has been selected for my computer: "Beulah" for the Lord is delighted.

My computer is a modest P2-300MHz with never enough (30Gb internal and 160Gb external) disk space, laser printer, 17" monitor, speakers, and a scanner.  I am connected by 56K modem to the EarthLink Internet Service.  If interested, please mention my name so that I may get a free month.  UPDATE - I am looking into expanding to a media computer tied to a multi-media TV, VCR, CD, DVD, camera, intercom, Internet, Intranet system and go laptop for a PC.

Namesakes - There are other Jim Pool's out there teaching college, running libraries, playing football, selling insurance, developing software, and inventing truss cranes, but none of these are me.  I will help wherever I can while I am able, so please contact me.
