Descendants of Isaac Gillbanks: First Generation

First Generation

1. Isaac¹ Banks-Gillbanks was, according to the IGI, born at Town End, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire, England, about 1699 as Isaac Bank, although I haven't been able to find any record of this and, although it is pure guesswork, I have assumed, because of the naming traditions of the north, that Isaac may have been the son of Thomas Gilbanks of Red Syke and Grace Vertue of Penruddock, Matterdale who married at Greystoke in Cumberland in 1685, I believe Isaac was baptised there in 1691.

Isaac's first two sons are recorded as being born at Town End, Broughton in Furness, while a Grace Beck was named as being born there in 1727, I think this was a miss-spelling of Bank due to dialect, incidently there is a record of William Beck, son of Isaac Beck of Appletreewort being baptised on December 28 1720, this is only about 3 miles from Town End, could this be another of Isaac Banks sons?.

In 1729 Isaac and family using the name Gillbancks moved to Torver where he bought a second farm, albeit after a Court Baron overruled the objections of the locals. If the locals wish had been carried out, to have Isaac's settlement agreement presented, we would now know where he was born, but it was overruled. Isaac and Margaret's son Isaac was baptised there in 1732. It is not known when he married Margaret, (Margaret is #2.) It is not known where Margaret was born, or her maiden name. Isaac died July 13 1750 in Wallenrigg, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire, England, His body was interred July 17 1750 in Broughton Chapel Churchyard, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire,

Margaret died 1754 at Picthall Ground, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire. Her body was interred 30 December 1754 in Broughton Chapel Churchyard, Broughton in Furness,Lancashire.

Isaac Banks-Gillbanks and Margaret had the following children:

child + 2 i. Thomas² Banckes was Baptised 1725 at St Mary Magdalene, Broughton in Furness,Lancashire.

child 3 ii. Grace Beck (Banks) was born in Town End, Broughton in Furness, Lancashire about 1727 and was Baptised at St Mary Magdalene, Broughton in Furness,Lancashire. She married William Carter in St, Luke, Torver, Lancashire, England., May 23, 1754 using the Gillbanks surname. Although I have found no record of William's death, the Church Records show that Grace married Jeremiah Heartley at St. Cuthbert, Beckside, Lancashire, England, in 1774, and that her son? William married Elizabeth Heartley the same day.

child 4 iii. John Banks was born in Town End, Broughton in Furness, he was Baptised February 1 1729 at St Mary Magdalene, Broughton in Furness,Lancashire. To date we have no more information regarding John's life.

child + 5 iv. Isaac Gillbancks was Baptised April 1 1732 at St. Luke, Torver, Lancashire.
