East Side Stories

Here are some stories written by members (and perhaps others) about their ancestors that lived on the East Side. Please share your story.

  • In Regina Erhardt Fassnacht: an "enhanced" genealogy, Jillaine Smith tells the (imbellished) story of a 19th century woman who made her way from the Black Forest of Germany to Buffalo, where she raised a family on her own and became a successful business woman.
  • Matilda Versch was Sharon Centanne's ancestor who came from Pennsylvania to Buffalo in the 19th century.
  • Julia Schauf Gantzer Kellermann was Sharon Centanne's maternal great-grandmother who was married twice (Gantzer, then Kellerman) and is the daughter of Phillipina Betz and Philipp Schauf.
  • George Richmond submitted this 1909 Buffalo Illustrated Times article about John Kraus -- one of the earlier (1830s) Germans of the East Side neighborhood.
