Jane Roberts was born Sunday, 2-7-1803, in Kentucky, probably in Wayne County. Her parents doubtless were William and Lydia Roberts. Notwithstanding the family records are incomplete, Martin W. Tabor saw her father and remembered his name. The census records the name of Lydia Roberts of Wayne County, Kentucky, 74 years old in 1850. She was 27 years older than Jane who named her first child Lydia, most likely for the child's grandmother. Many of the Roberts family fought in the American Revolution. One of these was probably Jane's grandfather.
Kentucky had been admitted to the Union little more than 12 years at the time of Jane's birth. She was inured [to accustom to something hard and painful] to the hardships essential to survival in an undeveloped community and adjusted to the atmosphere of frontier life. In Jane's youth, she was given a practical education. On 10-18-1823, at the age of 20, she married John DeHart with whom she lived more than three score years [60 years]. When she had been married five years [1828], she moved with her husband and first two children [Lydia and Martin] to Macon County, North Carolina [the area they moved to is known as Swain County now - 3 miles south of Bryson City], where she spent the rest of a most useful life.
Roberts is admittedly a derivative or variation of Robert. In the Compendium of American Genealogy. Ann Rogers Roberts of Burning Springs, West Virginia, traces her descents from Robert D'Estoteville, Baron of Cottingham and Gnarsboro.
[page 22 is missing! Maxine Barker Kuhn picked up on page 23 of the material given to her. Do not know if these are relatives or who simply share the Roberts name.]
Jonathan Roberts, born 8-16-1771 in upper Merion, Pennsylvania, was a personal friend of President Madison. He was a member of both Houses of the United States Congress.
Edmund Quincy Roberts, born 6-29-1784, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was the first American diplomat to consummate treaties with the Asiatics.
William Roberts, born in 1809, and Charles Roberts 23 years younger, were both born in Wales and came to America. Both were renowned Presbyterian clergymen.
Benjamin Stone Roberts was born in Manchester, Vermont, in 1811 and died in Washington, DC, in 1875. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1835, and as an officer, fought through the Mexican War. As the chief engineer, he built the Champlain and Ogdensburg Railroad [New York-Vermont?]. In 1842, he aided George W. Whistler in constructing the Russian system of railways. He was a Major General in the Civil War [Union side] and fought through the War with distinction. He invented the Roberts breech loading rifle and formed a company for its manufacture and sale. In 1868, he became a Professor of Military Science at Yale University.
Joseph Roberts born in Middletown, Delaware, 12-13-1814, graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1835. He became a skillful Brigadier General in the Civil War.
Owen Milo Roberts was born 7-9-1815 in Laurens District, South Carolina, and moved to Texas. He graduated from the University of Alabama. He was President of the Secession Convention and Colonel of a regiment in the Civil War. In 1879, he became Governor of Texas. Later, he was elected to the United States Senate, but was not allowed to take his seat [probably because of his Civil War participation]. After his political career had ended, he became Professor of Law at the University of Texas.
(And then there is J. Owen Roberts [relative of Owen Milo Roberts?], late of the Supreme Court of the United States.)
James Booth Roberts, born 9-27-1818 in New Castle, Delaware, was a well known popular actor.
Ellis Henry Roberts, born in Utica, New York, 9-30-1827, was an outstanding journalist and a member of the United States Congress. Hamilton College [Clinton, NY] and Yale University [New Haven, CT] each conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Law. George W. Roberts, born in Pennsylvania 10-2-1835, graduated from Yale University in 1857. He practiced law, at first, in his native county, and then in Chicago. He was a hard fighting Colonel in the Civil War and lost his life in the Battle of Stone River, Tennessee.
Howard Roberts, born in Philadelphia 4-9-1843, studied sculpture in Paris and elsewhere. His stature of Robert Fulton is in the Capital in Washington, DC.
Among these people are prominent agriculturists, actors, sculptors, inventors, engineers, clergymen,
journalists, college professors, doctors, lawyers, diplomats, generals, members of the House, members of the Senate, governors and jurists.
Jane Roberts was worthy of all the honor reflected upon her by her distinguished ancestors or illustrious tribesmen. Perhaps, Kentucky never produced a better woman than the energetic, frugal, charitable wife of John DeHart. She was largely responsible for his prosperity. Her memory should be cherished by everyone whose veins carry her blood. At the close of a long and useful life, she died 7-30-1886, above the age of 83. She lies by the side of her husband in the DeHart graveyard in Swain Co., NC.
Here are the names, in the order of birth of the children of John and Jane Roberts DeHart: Lydia, Martin, Mary, Hasseltine, Joseph, Jackson, George, John, Jane, Nathan, Polk, Dallas and Amanda. All but the first two [Lydia and Martin] were born in the present limits of Swain County, North Carolina.
(It was noted that Jane Roberts had black hair and brown eyes, while her husband was blonde and blue-eyed. Descendants obviously inherited their dark hair and eyes from Jane.)
