6. Betzer Family Bible - kept by Mrs. Ester Betzer Oldham of
Waterloo, NB
7. Ohio Tax Rolls
!NOTE: The Record of the German Reform Church - Alexanderia Twp, Hunderdon Co
NJ
states: June 8, 1775 as the date of baptism of "Johannes, s. Wilhelm u Maria
Bitzer" and the date of birth as March 29, 1775. The initial "s." in the
previous sentence stands for "sohne" or "son." The initial "u" between
Wilhelm and Maria stands for "und" or "and." Wilma Betzer Burt says her
research shows that the witnesses were: Johannes Peter Lenz; Heinrich and
Margarith Ebert. (Ebert is probably a French name sometimes spelled Hebert
but pronounced ay beyr) These names suggest the origination of these families
as France. They were perhaps Frankish (Germanic) natives of France. They
fled the St.Bartholomew day massacre of French Protestants northward into
the relative sanctuary of Heseen-Nassau where they had Frankish relatives.
Note: The photostat I possess does not show witnesses. Reference #5, THE
JERSEYMAN shows them, as quoted above.
The Ohio tax rolls show him in Ross Co., OH in 1800 and to Wyandotte
Co., OH in 1835. The 1810 tax list shows him in Green Twp.

Notes for Johannes Henricus BITZER

[26691.ged]

!NAME: Johannes Henricus
!BIRTH: Bef Nov 1700
!BAPTISM: Nov 1700
!MARRIAGE: 6 Jun 1731, Hachenburg, Oberwesterwald,Hessen-Nassau.
!REFERENCES: 1. HACHENBURG KIRKE-BUCHE 2, of the Reform Church, Hachenburg,
Oberwesterwald, Hessen-Nassau, Film #1340481, FHL, Salt Lake
City, Utah.
2. Mildred Evaline Betzer Heuston - THE DESCENDANTS OF CONRAD
BETZER IN AMERICA - Tishimongo, OK,1972, p. , (in library of
J. Thomas Betzer - 1451 Fry Lane, Hayward, CA., 94545.
!NOTE : The Kirke-Buche 2 (Ref. #1) whose entries begin in May 27,
1677,refers
to this family as "out-landers" (those not born in this area).
The pastor of this church was Johanne Cervino, suggestion an
origination other than Germanic. Other names on this document
suggest French origin of some of the families. Were they perhaps
Frankish (Germanic) natives of France? They could have been
a remnant of the Hugenots that has fled the St. Bartholomew's Day
Massacre of French protestents that fled northward into the relative
sanctuary of Hessen-Nassau where they had Frankish relatives.
Mildred Betzer Heuston (Ref. #2)says that family tradition places
Conrad Betzer as a Baron in Geneva Switzerland. Similarly others have
placed the forefather as a Baron in France. The Canton of Geneva was
the stronghold of Calvinism and bordered France. Although no real
connection has been made, it is interesting to note that in the suburbs
of Paris near Versailles there is a parish of Betz. Southwest of Paris
in the valley of the Loire river there is the Chateau de le Betz.
Perhaps research may later make prove that our Betzer's came originally
from that area.

Notes for Johannes Petrus BITZER

[26691.ged]

!NAME: Johannes Petrus Bitzer*
!BIRTH: Nov 1700*
!CHRISTENING: Nov 1700*
!MARRIAGE: 6 Jun 1731 to Maria Margaretha Textorin*
!NOTE: Johannes Peter and his line are entered as a probable ancestor of
Wilhelm
Bitzer. This way the data is entered and may be changed if necessary.
The names of the witnesses in Hachenburg are similar to those in the German
Reform Church in Hunterton, New Jersey etc. Their marriage notation includes
29 April Personarium Descripto and the Copulatio, 6 June 1731.*
This family is no longer found in Hachenburg after 1740. It is believed
that Wilhelmus is either born elsewhere or is either Wilhelm Frederich b 1735
or Phllip Wilhelm b 1737. In early records of the family his date of birth
was 1737. However the DAR says 1743.**
