| At one time, one of my goals in life was to raise dust in the streets of Broughton. I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to fly from Florida to St.Louis in a Navy -Fighter type aircraft. The route, of course, brought me over Eldorado and near Broughton. I arrived over Eldorado at about 5000 feet and discovered the water tower, across the street from my father's home place. As I descended (rapidly) toward the house, I saw my two Aunts come from the back door of the house, each waving some sort of white cloth. One of them fell over a rose bush as I leveled off over the trees. I proceeded over the business district and on over the High School. From there I proceeded north, along the highway to Broughton. It was exciting, because I knew every one of the families who lived along the highway. At Broughton, I turned over Sherman Porter's woods and west over Dawes Street. I did raise dust in the street as I passed over the Depot, Elevator, and Allen's Store. An Uncle sent me a copy of the Eldorado Daily Journal later and it read "Local Boy Comes Home". Had the wrong people heard of this event, I might have been in DEEP trouble. Joe Dudley told me, a few years ago, that his Mother had written him about me flying over Broughton. J. Ward Barnes, the Principal at E.T.H.S. at the time, told me later that I had rattled every window in the school. For no other reason, they knew that I had been there. Tom Young |
