ROCK HILL AME ZION CHURCH CEMETERY

2723 Lawyers Road West, Indian Trail, NC

Vance Township, Union County, North Carolina

Reading done Jan. 2009-Nov. 2010 by Patricia Poland

Notes: This is an African-American Church. Tradition among the members holds

that Daniel Wentz was probably the first to be buried in the cemetery.

Some information about it comes from two newspaper articles:

In 1899 Dr. Austin bought 93 ¾ acres more extending out to the old Lawyers Road; 2 acres of this he gave to the Rock Hill Colored Church in 1907.” -article about Stewart’s Mill from The Monroe Journal, 5-10-1957

Per a church (or family reunion) history:  D. Wentz was born in 1834, an ex-slave.  At the close of the War Between the States, he was a young man at the age of thirty.  At thirty-two, he, with others:  Matt Morris, Bill Shehorne and Joe Orr, founded Rock Hill Church in a prayer service in an old gold mine mill house.     –author unknown

“…founded when three miners—Nat Morris, William Shelborne and David Newell—began to hold prayer meetings in a small mineshaft.  Shelborne and Newell, who were white, and Morris, who was black, were then joined by four others:  Daniel Wentz, Jackson Black, Issac Stewart and Joe Orr…” – article by Jane Duckwall, Neighbors, Charlotte Observer, 8-17-2008, p2U

Note:  Daniel Wentz “was the first man to have a funeral preached after the church was established.” Per the church (or family reunion) history quoted above.
