Wednesday, May 1, 1878 PEE DEE HERALD (Anson County,
NC)
On Friday last George WOMBLE was put on trial, charged with, first, the
murder of Miss RUSHING; second, as being accessory to her suicide. She
was, according to the testimony, not an idiot, but a person of weak mind; her
parents being dead, she lived a part of her time with WOMBLE, who
married her sister, and a part with another brother-in-law. It was in evidence
that she was pregnant and that she died from poison; that WOMBLE, at
whose house she died, was arrested – some weeks after her death – and committed
to prison by a Magistrate’s Court; that while under arrest he confessed buying
strychnine for her; that he said he was ‘overpersuaded’ to do it; that he
consented to do so because she said she wanted to ‘get out of the way so as to
prevent disgrace to that family;’ that he sat up with a dying neighbor on the
night preceding her death; that he could not have had an opportunity of
administering the poison. His character was proven to be good. At conclusion of
testimony the Solicitor withdrew the first ‘count’ in the bill of Indictment;
and, without argument by counsel, the case went to the Jury on the second
‘count,’ after a lucid and comprehensive, though brief charge from Judge Moore.
Within a very few minutes a verdict of ‘not guilty’ was rendered, and the
prisoner discharged.
