January 10, 1850, THE CAROLINA WATCHMAN  (Salisbury, Rowan County, NC)

-Mr. CAMERON, of the Wadesboro' "Argus," has sold out that paper to Mr. Samuel FULTON, who has heretofore been employed in the office as Foreman.  We regret very much to part with Mr. CAMERON, who found it necessary to turn his attention to other business.  Mr. FULTON is a good printer, and we are encouraged to believe that he will give entire satisfaction to the old friends of the Argus as an Editor.  The politics of the paper will undergo no change.

-Died: On Sunday the 14th inst., at Meltonsville in this county, Mrs. Adeline BIVENS, wife of John BIVENS and the daughter of Wilson CHAMBERS, in the 26th year of age. The deceased has been for the last ten years a consistent and devoted member of the Baptist church.

-Died at C.F. College [Carolina Female College], on the 16th inst., Bettie HARRIS, daughter of R. M. and Susan C. ALEXANDER, aged 13 months and 8 days.

-Departed this life at his residence in Anson county, on the 11th of January 1854, Robert HUNTLEY, senr., in the 93rd year of his age.  Brother HUNTLEY was a soldier in the great struggle of his country for liberty – was placed as guard in the battle at Camden when GATES was defeated – afterward aided as one of a scouting party to subdue the Tories…

-Died: Departed this life in Anson, on the 3rd of May, 1854, sister Jane HUNTLY, consort of Robert HUNTLY, Jr., in the 59th year of her age.

 

Saturday, July 8, 1854 THE PEE DEE STAR (Wadesborough, Anson Co, NC)

-We learn that on Monday last, Parham KIRK, Sr., of Stanly county, met with an accident which caused his death. He was riding upon a load of lumber when the jolting of the wagon throwing him off his balance, he fell to the ground and the wheels passing over his body caused his death in a short time.  He was an aged and respectable citizen, and held the office of  sheriff many years ago.

-Married: In this county, on Thursday evening last, by Rev. T. R. WALSH, Dr. J. B. TWITTY, of C. F. College [Carolina Female College], to Nannie, daughter of John W. FLAKE, deceased.

-Died: In this county, on the 23rd ult., William Joseph,  son of William L. and Harriet L. WHITE, aged seventeen and a half months.

-Died: In this county, on the 3rd inst., James Preston, son of Archibald and Martha A. NIVENS, aged 1 year and 10 days.

-Died: Near Wadesborough, on the 1st inst., Thos. J. HUTCHINSON, in the sixteenth year of his age.

-Died: In this county on the 6th inst., Hannah PINES, infant daughter of Benjamin I. And Eliza A. DUNLAP, aged nine months and a few days.

-Died: At her father’s residence, near White’s Store, in this county, Miss Emily H., daughter of Thomas and Mary W. HUNTLY, aged 20 years, 10 months and 24 days, being born on the 18th of August, 1833, and died on the 24th of June 1854…

-Died: On the 3rd inst., at the residence of her son, Thomas WATTS, in Chesterfield District, S.C., Mrs. Lavina WATTS, aged between 85 and 90 years. She has been for the last 52 years a devoted member of the Baptist church. She was wife of Thomas WATTS, deceased, and sister of the late Robert HUNTLY, Sr., of this county.

-Carolina Lodge, No. 48, A.Y.M., Tribute of Respect… Brother Basel M. THOMPSON departed this life on Saturday the 2d inst.… [lengthy tribute, but gives no personal information]

-Died: In this county, on the 31st of August last, Joseph Washington, son of Flavel B. and Mary A. FLAKE, aged 6 months.

-Died: On the 6th inst., in Anson county, at the late residence of her grandfather, John LEE, Miss Sarah LEE, in the 18th year of her age… Her mother, Mrs. Winnie LEE has passed through many painful vicissitudes of life – has been twice married, both of her husbands dying prematurely.  Yet she had a hope in her three lovely children, Rosa, Sarah and John… [lengthy obituary says she lost her other two children in late July from the same disease.]

-Died: At C. F. College [Carolina Female College], on the 23rd inst., Sarah Jane, d/o T. L. and Frances GALE, aged 1 year, 2 months and 19 days.

-Died: In Choctow county, Miss., on the 3d inst., of Pulmonary Consumption, Mrs. Nancy KINDRED, wife of Davis KINDRED. She was born in Anson county, N.C. on the 30th of November 1811, and died September 3d, 1854… She has left six children, four sons and two daughters…

-Died in Anson County, on the night of the 18th ultimo, after an illness of five days of congestive fever, Josiah ALLEN, aged 18 years and one month, son of Joseph and Nancy ALLEN. He was a young man of great promise and kindly disposed and loved by all who knew him.

-Died in Union County on the 16th ultimo, Susan Rebecca, daughter of Col. F. INGRAM of Anson.

-Died at Lilesville, October the 7th, Ella Florence, daughter of James A. and Tempie LILES, aged 10 months and 20 days.

This is Martha Winfree Meacham, wife of William Smith Meacham, not “W.G.” Meacham, although this is what the original newspaper said).

-Died at her residence in Union Co., N. C., 23d Nov. 1856, Elisabeth CRAIG, in the 63 year of her age. Her disease was Pneumonia…connected herself with the Associate Reformed Congregation worshipping at Tirza. After her marriage she transferred her membership to Shiloh, an Associate congregation, her husband being a member of that body. When these congregations united, she returned to Tirzah for convenience of worship. She was one of the founders of Tirzah; and the younger sister of A. J. NESBIT. Her husband, all her children and grandchildren except Sanford, son of H. WILSON Esq., preceded her into the spiritual world.…

-Departed this life in Union Co., N. C. on the 18th of February, 1858, Mrs. Mary STEWART, wife of John STEWART, Esq., in the 61st year of her age. … She was, for something more than forty years, a consistent member of the Associate Reformed Church, at Shiloh, in the Waxhaws.... [survived by] an aged husband, two sons and five daughters.

August 13, 1858, DUE WEST TELESCOPE (Due West, S.C.)

-Died at his residence in Union Co., N. C. on the 27th ult., John WALKER, Esq. in the 78th year of his age. … in early life connected himself with the congregation worshipping at Tirzah. He was three times married and raised a tolerably numerous family. … A few days before his death he walked out to the graveyard which was near, in company with Mrs. WALKER, and was observed to contemplate with more than usual solemnity, the last resting place of loved ones, till at length struggling emotion vented itself in a flood of tears. He then remarked to Mrs. WALKER, “I have been three times married have lived about 11 years with each of my wives; I now think our separation is near.”
