Union County Clerk of Superior Court
Record of Estates (partial listing only)
This is a partial listing of early estate records found in Union County Clerk of Superior Court, Record of Estates, Volume 1. Although Volume 1 contains estates from 1843-1847, these listed below are from the first couple of years only. The original records are housed at the N.C. Division of Archives and History in Raleigh, NC. The Union County Courthouse in Monroe has transcriptions of early wills, but not of the estate records themselves.
Basically, estate records contain information about the property and debts belonging to a person
at the time of their death. If they left a will, then the Executor is the one appointed in the will to
carry out its provisions. If they died intestate (without a will), then an Administrator is appointed
to manage or divide the estate of the deceased person. A Guardian is a person appointed to care
for and manage property of a minor orphan or an adult incompetent of managing his own affairs.
These minor orphans or incompetent adults are called WARDS.
Transcriptions of these Estate Records are currently being published in issues of the Carolinas
Genealogical Society bulletin (starting with issue XLII.4 [issue 42.4], Spring 2005-2006).
