-Mrs. Miriam HOWIE, of Sandy Ridge township, died Aug 13, 1901... seventy years old... member of Pleasant Grove Methodist church... widow of the late George HOWIE. Made her home with her son-in-law, Mr. W.I. BLYTHE. Four children: Messrs. W.H., W.F. and J.W. HOWIE, and Mrs. A.M. HOWIE survive her.

 -Mrs. Elizabeth HOWIE, widow of Mr. Albert M. HOWIE, died yesterday at eleven o’clock at her home near Pleasant Grove camp ground, of paralysis.  The funeral was held this morning at ten o’clock by the pastor, Rev. E.N. CROWDER, at Pleasant Grove church, and the interment was in the cemetery.  Mrs. HOWIE was 67 years old, and is survived by 4 children, Miss Kittie HOWIE and Messrs. James and Lawson HOWIE who lived with her, and Mrs. HUGGINS, wife of Rev. T.J. HUGGINS

-Another of the county’s best and most beloved citizens passed away in the death of Mr. William Henry HOWIE of Waxhaw, who died at ten o’clock on Friday morning, Jan. 2, 1925, in his 86th year.  His birthday was October 31, 1838, and he was born near the HOWIE Mine in Sandy Ridge township.  He had been in feeble health for some time, being confined to his bed only two or three days.  Mr. HOWIE was twice married, his first wife being Miss Elizabeth WINCHESTER, and to this union four sons and three daughters survive.  The sons are W.A., C.L., and B.F. HOWIE of Sandy Ridge township, and S. O. HOWIE, Zolfo, Fla.  The daughters are Mrs. W. H. HOWIE, Mrs. W. I. BLYTHE of Sandy Ridge and Mrs. Jeff HINSON of Monroe township.  Mr. HOWIE’S second marriage was to Mrs. Mittie NIVEN, of Waxhaw.  Mr. HOWIE for many years had been a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist church as a steward and a trustee of the camp ground.  He was one of the county’s best men, honorable in his dealings and admired by a host of friends.  Funeral was held Saturday at 1 o’clock at Pleasant Grove church, conducted by Rev. E. N. CROWDER, pastor.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

[8]- Tuesday, May 3, 1904, THE MONROE JOURNAL (Union County, N.C.)

-Mr. J. L. PORTER of Mineral Springs died at three o’clock Thursday morning.  He had suffered very much with rheumatism for a long time, and for some time prior to his death, was confined to the bed.  He was 49 years of age.  Eleven years ago he was married to Miss Ella PRICE, daughter of J. McCollum PRICE, and she, with three children, survives him.  Mr. PORTER was a most earnest member of Pleasant Grove church.  He was a good citizen, a kind husband and loving father.  He was held in very high esteem by his neighbors, and during his illness they showed him every attention.  Mrs. PORTER desires The Journal to return her thanks to them for their many kindnesses.  The funeral was conducted at Pleasant Grove by Rev. L. E. STACEY.  Messrs. A. M., William and Mary PORTER, and Mrs. J. P. SIMPSON are brothers and sister of the deceased.

 

[9]- Tuesday, June 16, 1903, THE MONROE JOURNAL (Union County, N.C.)

-Mr. D. Wilshire REID, a well known citizen of Sandy Ridge township, died last Tuesday after a long illness of consumption. He was 53 years old.  He was a schoolteacher and a farmer, a member of the Methodist church and an honest man who stood well with his neighbors.  He was married to Miss Jane BIGGERS, daughter of Mr. J. A. BIGGERS, and she with eight children survive him.

-Died at his home in Union county, N.C., March 7th, 1894, Mr. G. A. WINCHESTER, aged eighty-four years, six months and a few days. For over sixty years he has been a consistent member and a true and faithful worker in Pleasant Grove M. E. South, Charlotte District, W. N. C. Conference. --- The old story! “A vacant seat and an empty chair” remind us that time is fleeting and we too must go into the misty beyond. Mrs. S. E. HOWIE, Potter, N.C., April 15th, 1894.

-Mrs. Anna WINCHESTER of Jackson township, died last Thursday… 38 years old… buried at Pleasant Grove… husband and eight children survive… youngest child only a few hours old when its mother died, is being cared for by Mrs. Henry McWHORTER, a sister of the deceased.
