Reg Carolan: Marin athletic star
Reg Carolan of San Rafael, a former professional football player and athletic star at Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, died Sunday while jogging at Phoenix Lake in Ross.
Carolan had fallen down a steep bank into the water according to the coroner. He was 43.
He had played pro football with the San Diego Chargers in 1962-63 before being traded to the Oakland Raiders and then to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a member of the Chiefs Super Bowl championship team in 1969. He had played the tight end position with the team for seven years.
Carolan had been a professional football player for nine years. He later sold computers and recently entered the carpeting business, operating the San Rafael franchise of Conklin Brothers with his brother Ken.
He had maintained his interest in athletics and competed in the Dipsea Race this year, his 12th time in the race. At 6 foot 6 inches tall and 245 pounds, he was considered the largest person in the race.
He usually ran in the Double Dipsea which goes from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach and back.
Carolan was a star athlete and student body president at Drake High School. He continued his studies at the University of Idaho before starting his professional football career.
Arrangements are pending at Chapel of the Hills in San Anselmo.
