Both Lester and Willie were born and raised in and around Carolan, Arkansas. They married July 14, 1912: Lester was 19, and Willie was 15 years old.
Their parents were sharecroppers, farming other's land for a share of the crops. Lester and Willie started doing the same. They were living on Willie's oldest sister Minnie Carolan's property east of the Carolan Cemetery when all three of their children were born: Hayrel, Mazel, and Maxine.
Maxine was only two weeks old, and it was Mazel's fifth birthday, November 21, 1922 when they moved by horse and wagon to Branch, Arkansas. Lester went to work there in the coal mine. After one year, they moved back to Carolan again on Mazel's birthday November 21, 1923. They sharecropped in Carolan, Lucas, Logan Hall, and Golden City. In the fall of 1936, they moved to Eastern Arkansas where they worked on a farm, planting, hoeing, and picking cotton.
Before moving, Hayrel had married Elizabeth Bernice Creekmore in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma November 11, 1935. On a trip back to Carolan, Mazel married James Wesley Warren August 16, 1937. Both Hayrel and Mazel were there with their spouses. Before the end of the 1937 harvest, Hayrel and Elizabeth moved to Broken Arrow. At the end of the harvest, Mazel and Wesley moved back to Logan Hall. Lester, Willie, and Maxine stayed until the end of the next year's harvest before moving back to Logan Hall.
Lester, Willie, and Maxine again were sharecropping. In 1948 the three moved into the house in Carolan where Hayrel and Mazel started to school. They were working for the state of Arkansas. Lester worked with the cattle, herding, brand, mending fences, and everything that goes along with raising cattle. Willie and Maxine cooked breakfast and lunch for the men that worked with the cattle. The beef was for the patients and employees of the state sanitarium. They owned the only car they ever had while living in this house.
In about 1951 they moved to 680 Broadway Street in Booneville. This is the first house they ever owned. Lester worked at the sanitarium. In about 1954 the three moved in with and took care of Mrs. Edwards, an elderly lady. This house was located on Sharp Street.
In early 1955 Hayrel and Mazel went with their father when he had a cyst removed at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock. Lester never completely recovered from this operation. He died at St. Edwards Hospital in Ft. Smith, August 10, 1955.
In the fall of 1955 Willie and Maxine moved to Glenpool, Oklahoma and lived for a short time with her brother Hyrum and his wife Nellie. They then bought and moved in the house at 318 East Greeley Street in Broken Arrow.
Willie went to work as a cook for Broken Arrow Nursing Home on Date Street. She also took in ironing, sewing, and quilting. At different times Willie and Maxine also stayed with elderly people in their homes.
Willie was in this house when she died from respiratory track hemorrhaging June 25, 1979. Maxine continued to live in this house. She moved to Hayhurst Nursing Home a few days before she died of cancer August 31, 1995.
