Samuel Alexander McJilton

In the 1880 census, Samuel A. McJilton is shown living on East Biddle street in baltimore. He is listed as 26 years old and living with a wife, Maggie, 20, and two sons, Clarence, 4, and Howard, 1. The census taker recorded his place of birth as
maryland (his father & mother also recorded as being born in Maryland.) His occupation is listed as clerk. (Law Library, Court of Appeals, Annapolis, Md., 1880 census, Vol 5. ED 75, SH 29, LN 38.)

From Polks Baltimore directory (Peabody Library, Baltimore) Samuel McJilton is found first in 1878 living at 255 N. Wolfe St. (which is close to Madison and Wolfe); he is listed as a paver. In 1879 his address is listed as 120 E. Biddle, and he is
listed as a paver. In 1885 he is still listed as a paver, but has moved to Wolfe St. near Belair. He remained a paver but moved to 502 E. Chase in 1886, and to 2006 E. Chase in 1887, possibly to be closer to his work, but good data on Baltimore
street building has not been found. He had two brothers, Joseph and Thomas.

In 1887 while living at 2006 E. chase, Polks lists Samuel A. as a contractor. Records for 1888 and 1889 can not be located, but for 1890 and 1891 he was living at 1809 N. Gay Street, and his occupation is listed as bricklayer. From Gay Street Sam
moved to 1719 N. Patterson Park Ave. (in 1892) and was still working as a bricklayer. For 1893 through 1896 no records can be found. In 1897 he lived on Harford Road, and was again listed as a paver. From 1899 to 1902 his address was 955 N.
Washington Street, first listed as laborer, then as a paver.

In the census of 1900, a Jas. or Jos. McJilton is listed in Monkton, Md. The census was indexed under funding from the WPA and the person doing the indexing listed the head of household as Jas. or Jos. or perhaps another name. (The handwriting is very
bad.) He is listed as 44 years old, with birth date given as July, 1855. The census was taken on June 11, 1900. He, his father and mother, are all listed as having been born in Ireland. He was living with Annie E. who is 39; Ada O., age 11; Grace,
age 6; and Hazel, age 5. The census lists his year of immigration as 1856. The occupation listed is farmer; the farm was still mortgaged.

In the saem census, Samuel A. McJilton is listed as a boarder in the home of Joseph Svec at 955 n. Washington Street. (The lower case "n" was the custom in the 1900's.) The census is dated 7 JUNE 1900. It lists his birthdate as Nov., 1851, and his
age is listed as 48. He is listed as having been married 20 years. He, his father and mother, are listed as being bron in Irleand. He is listed as entering the country in 1870, has lived in this country 30 years, and is a citizen. His occupation is
listed as street paver.

In 1910, Polks lists a Mrs. Annie E. McJilton living at 706 n. Monroe. (There may not be any connection.)

Also in 1910, three McJiltons are listed as living at 1845 n. Chester Street: Thomas, Joseph F., a barber, (Tom's son); and William, a lineman, also Tom's son. The third son, Thomas T., is a clerk, living at 2101 e. Layfayette. In 1915 Polks lists
Samual A. at the chester Street address.

The 1910 census was recorded on May 2, 1910. It is SD 2 (Supervisors District), ED (Enumeration District) 36, Sheet 9A. The farm location is 1st precinct, 10th distrct. Samuel A. is listed as being 55 years old, marriedfor 22 years. Place of birth
-- Ireland; father born in Scotland, and mother born in Ireland. Wife's name, Annie E. (age not clear). Living with them are Ada O, age 20, daughter; Eugene A.; son0in-law, 23, born md.; Murrel, duaghter (granddaughter), 3; Wilfred, son (grandson),
1; Grace, daughter, 14; Hazel, daughter, 14; Annie Ellenora, daughter, 9; Samuel W., son, 6; Willard E., son 3.

In the 1920 census, Samuel was at the same farm. (Vol 7 ED 36, SH 3, LN 58, Phila. Archives) Samuel A., his father and mother, are all listed as being from ireland. Date of naturalization may be 1878 (it is blurred). he is listed as being 65. Annie
E., daughter, (Ellenora), is 18. Samuel Walter si 16, and listed as Samuel W.; Willard E. is 13. The farm location is Wesley Chapel Road.

From 1915 on, Samuel A.'s occupation is listed as foreman. In 1920 Nora waslisted as a saleslady for confectionaries (candy store), and Walter was a shipping clerk in a clothing store. In 1922 Samuel A. and Annie E. lived at 333 maryland Avenue in
Westport. In 1923 Samuel Walter and Virginia moved in with them. The 1930 census will not be available until 2000.

Samuel also married Annie Elizabeth Watters, daughter of Robert Alabone Watters and Amanda E. Delevett. (Annie Elizabeth Watters was born in Cork, Ireland, died in 1931 and was buried in 1931.)
