General Notes: C. Brandt May writes: Barton graduated from Tecumseh, Oklahoma High School. He worked for the C.B. Billington Lumber Co. in the 1920s selling oil rig timbers. He worked in the oil boom towns of Seminole, Maud, and Sparks, Oklahoma. In the 1930s he worked for Pottawatomie Co. in both the County Treasurer's office and in the County Assessor's office. In the 1940s he was the agent for Sinclair Refinery Co. in Shawnee and as an accountant for Scrivener-Stevens Wholesale Grocery Co. In the 1950s he was agent for the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the State Dept. of Agriculture. In the 1960s he worked for Werrell-Lowe Oldsmobile Co. and Patterson Motor Co. in Shawnee as a bookkeeper and salesman.
Barton was well known and respected throughout Pottawatomie Co. for his fairness and honesty. Barton was a Mason and a member of the First Christian Church in Shawnee. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. On retirement in 1968 Barton fished for 6 months and found that a steady diet of fishing was dull. He returned to work as a part-time salesman for Patterson so he could be with the people he had associated with all his life.

767. Clydia Wilmoth DICKERSON 56,57,129 (Julius DICKERSON478, Catherine GRAHAM248, Mary (Polly) SIMMONS73, Rhoda LESTER9, John Sr.1) was born on Nov 16, 1881 in Floyd Co., Va.,129 died on Apr 8, 1920 in Riner, Va., at age 38,129 and was buried on Apr 10, 1920 in White Oak Grove Cemetery, Floyd, Virginia.
General Notes: Clyde Maxey shared this with me on June 17, 2000. "At some point in time and I think it must have been around the late 1800s Grandpa lived near White Oak Grove Church. The reason I say in the 1800's is because mother was born there in December of 1899. Anyway, he had a horse named Logan. It seems that Aunt Clydia went to get the cows and there was a bear close by and this horse kept himself between the bear and Clydia until help arrived. I really don't know what they did, but they heard her calling for help and went to her aid. I also think that there was a fence between her and the bear.
Sometime after this, Grandpa had been to Christiansburg and was coming back through Riner and there was a circus stopping there. Logan kept dancing and snorting and someone said that he was afraid of the bear, but Grandpa allowed that he hated bears and if he were to turn him loose he would kill the bear. My mother told this a little different in that she said that the horse got up to the fence in order for Aunt Clydia to get on him and safely away from the bear."
I guess I forgot to tell you that this was told to me by Uncle Dexter."
The name Wilmoth has been found spelled several different ways. In the Family Bible it is Wilmith and Willmoth. Clydia's Grandmother, Susan Wilmeth Hall seems to be spelled Wilmeth, and Clydia's daughter, Evia seems to spell her middle name Wilmoth. The name Clydia Dickerson Thompson is on her grave stone.
Noted events in her life were:
• She has conflicting birth information of Nov 11, 1881 in Two Different Dates Copied From A Bible.
• She owned property in Baptist.
Clydia married Abraham Wade THOMPSON 129,180 on May 12, 1898 in Floyd, Floyd Co., Va. 129.,164 Abraham was born on Dec 25, 1879 in Floyd, Floyd Co., Va. 129, died on Jun 2, 1962 in Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Va., at age 82 129, and was buried in White Oak Grove Cemetery, Floyd, Virginia. Another name for Abraham was WADE.
Marriage Notes: 10 children. 46
General Notes: Kasia Johnson's grandmother.
Notes from Randy Lucas in June, 2000. "Wade Thompson was a farmer and worked at odd jobs helping other farmers as I was growing up. Nell Trump should be able to help with information as your mother and sister were growing up."
Notes from Clyde Maxey. "There was a man, Sidney Akers, that didn't have but one eye and really couldn't see well out of the other. He was working for the railroad and an unexploded dynamite cap blew up when his pick hit it thus putting his eye out. (I guess he got his medical bill paid but that was all. How times have changed.)Now Sid used a straight razor to shave with and everyone predicted that he would one day cut his throat bad.
One day Wade was on his way to the store at Pleasant Valley and passed by "Big" Charlie Reed's house. Charlie said, "stop and tell us a lie" to which Wade replied, "I can't right now, Sid Akers has finally cut his throat and I am on my way to the Valley to get help."
After he had gone, Charlie decided to go down to Sid's and see if he could offer any assistance. Naturally when he got there Sid was all right. Charlie became very mad and approached Wade about the situation. Wade said, "you said to tell you a lie, so I did." There was nothing Charlie could do."

General Notes: Uncle Posey Pugh used to come up home and tell "war tales". He and daddy would talk for hours about his experiences in the war.
Two things have stuck in my mind all these years. One is that they were in France, in the trenches, when the Germans made a drive. The French hollered "here they come, run". the Americans said "run Hell, shoot. He said the Germans were surprised to find any resistance. Another thing was that he didn't see the Red Cross after he got to France but that the Salvation Army had a coffee shop set up everywhere they could find a spot.
I have heard others make similar coments.
Got to se if I can do the picture thing.

"She was born at what we call the Della Graham place. It is on Route 8 about 10 miles west of Floyd Courthouse. Granddaddy had a store there and I believe it is still standing. This was before he went to Nebraska. The best I can figure he went there about 1904 or 5. None of the children were born there and Uncle Dexter was born in 1908. He had decided to stay there until he stood and watched his corn crop get cut down by the hail. He then wrote home and told whoever to save him the Nixon place because he was coming home. The deed is dated 1907."

Dexter Dickerson
92-yr. old farmed all his life
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 17, 2001 for Dexter Arlington Dickerson, who died Thursday while working on the farm.
Dickerson was born and reared in Floyd County, his home place being on the West Fork of Little River. The youngest of 14 children, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sister and in-laws.
The 92-year-old had farmed all his life, even during the 30-year period he worked for Norfolk and Western Railway in Roanoke. Up until he was about 90 years old, Dickerson could be found raking hay and helping with hand-haling chores.
"He was amazing in his youthfulness," observed daughter Deronda Thomas. "He always had a positive attitude, and he always wanted harmony." He never met a stranger, Thomas continued, "He could pick up a conversation with anyone. He was an historian, and he would like to talk about the old days, I think he touched a lot of people's lives that way."
Dickerson had been a widow for 30 years, his wife having passed away July 24, 1971. A father and grandfather, he was extremeely close to his family, whom he dearly loved.
He had been a member of Floyd Baptist Church since the 1930s, and that was where his funeral service was conducted. A complete obituary is printed on Page 2A.(The obituary was the same as the Roanoke Paper above.)

General Notes: A SEARCH THROUGH SOME OF MOM'S SOUVENIRS
An insurance policy application dated 3-17-1937 made out in San Diego, California, for Jerry Curtis Lester shows that was when Mother took me to California so that she could be with Dad while he was in the Navy and stationed there. I remember Mother saying that she took me to California when I was 6 Mos. old, which would have been in December, 1936. The weekly premium was 25 cents. There are two copies of this policy in Dad's things [I don't understand the need for two policies]. It was a 20-year pay life, and they gave it to me about 1980 for the cash value. I used it to buy cemetery lots, as it had a value of about $1300 at that time. This seemed an appropriate thing to do with the money, as they undoubtedly had intended it for just such an expense.
There is also a record of Mother's small pox vaccination obtained aboard Dad's ship, the U.S.S. Whitney, on 3-23-1937. An examination on 4-1-1937 showed that she was immune.
There are church bulletins among the souvenirs, which show that we were in Pulaski, Virginia on 1-12-1941 and in Portsmouth, Virginia, on 8-17-l941. I recall that we came to Portsmouth during the summer. We lived in a new apartment complex called Swanson Homes. It was in the Prentice Park section of Portsmouth, at the corner of Des Moines Avenue and South Street. We were living there when the war started on December 7, 1941. Dad was working in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Dad's information shows that we moved to 33 Swanson Parkway in May of 1941.
There is also a Greyhound bus itinerary for the trip back from San Diego to Christiansburg which shows that the trip took five days. Unfortunately, there is no date on it.
There is ticket information which shows that Mother took the train to California. But wait, there are passenger checks for Pullman accommodations stamped "MAR 3, 35" which indicates that she went by train before I was born (6-27-1936). So, I don't really know whether we went by train when she took me. [We may have gone by train and returned by Greyhound bus.]
Finally, there is a Greyhound "Identification check" which is dated 8-21-1937. So, this must be the day we left San Diego to return to Christiansburg. (It is also stamped San Diego.)
There is a commencement announcement for Mom's high school graduation. There were 15 in her class. There is also Mother's Valedictory address. She graduated from Auburn H.S., Riner, Virginia. I have placed this in the notebook with other items that should be seen (by any casually interested person).
There are letters from Dad to Mother while he was in the Navy. There are bulletins announcing activities on Dad's ship, the U.S.S. Whitney.
I have left these things in the same white box that Mother and Dad had then in, except for the valedictory address. The items are stored in a box labeled: "Corcoran."
