General Notes: An account by Julrene Thornberg:
I will give you the names of the family I have. Hattie Mary Lester born Dec. 24, 1874 in Virginia. She married Henry Christ Reese on Dec. 26, 1895. They married in Virginia at the home of James Lester. He is from Lakota, Iowa, on the marriage license. They go back to Iowa to live. I think that is when Abe and Callie Lester follow her back to Iowa. On the marriage license Henry is 24 years old and Hattie 21.
They had Irven Ole Reese on Jan. 15, 1897 in Lakota, Iowa. They had Virgie Rose Reese on June 17, 1898 in Lakota, Iowa. In Dec. 7, 1898 Hattie died. I don't know from what yet? Then in March 28, 1899 Virgie Rose Reese dies. Three months after her mother. They are both buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Lakota, Iowa. On the back of Hattie's stone is Virgie's name and birth and death date. I have contacted the cemetery and they have verified that she is buried with her mother and the plot numbers.
Henry was ill at the time with TB and he leaves Irven with Abe Lester to go for help back east. On his way back east he meets and marries Ida Mae Mellor. They get married and have a boy Elmer Lavern Reese. Henry doesn't get better so they go to Virginia where he passes away.
Ida Mae Reese comes back to Iowa where her family is and marries again. The son Elmer Lavern Reese was born Oct. 5, 1900 in Albian, Nebraska. My mother remembers that her father ( Irven ) was told that his name was Lester and Abe and Callie were his parents until he was 18 yrs old and then they told him about his mother and father. He knew he had a sister but not a brother until in 1931 Elmer Reese contacted his half brother and they met for the first time in Iowa. My grandfather was 34 yrs old. I have a picture of their meeting for the first time.
I have finally found the Elmer Reese family in Iowa and they had the picture. But they don't know where Henry died, exactly. They have sent back to Virginia for a death search and there is no death certificate in Virginia on Henry. On Henry's marriage license he states his mother is Elizabeth ? and Father Henry Reese. We have found through census that his mother was born in 1840 in Germany and his father was born in Germany. But the Census says that she is a widow in 1895. It also says that she had been in the U.S. for 35 yrs on the 1905 census. Henrys mother's grave stone is in Maple Hill Cemetery close to Hattie's. She was born in 1840 in Germany and died in 1913 in Lakota, Iowa. Henrys brother Ernest Reese was born in 1863 in Germany and married a Abigail ??? born 1865 in Virginia and died 1953 in Lakota , Iowa. Ernest died in 1954 in Lakota, Iowa. They are buried close to Hattie also.
There was one more son Herman Reese born in 1876 in New York. That is where Henry was born on his marriage license. Don't know anything about him as of yet. I have posted all this information on the Lester family genealogy under Hattie and Henry Reese. There is also a Charles Lester Born 1862 and died 1929 in Lakota, Iowa, and wife Amelia J. Lester born 1880 and died 1926 in Lakota,Iowa. They are both buried in Maple Hill Cemetery. I can't figure out who they are or what family they came from. She died before Irven was 3 yrs old. He was raised by Hatties parents Abraham and Calmona Lester, in Lakota, Iowa. Hattie and Martha ( Mattie ) were twins. Hattie is buried in the Maple Hill Cemetry, Lakota, Iowa with her parents. On her stone it reads Hattie Mary Lester. Dec. 24, 1874. Death Dec. 7, 1898. Lakota, Iowa.
I believe that she went west to Lakota, Iowa with her parents in the late 1890's.
She ment Henry Christ Reese in Lakota. He was born in Chicago, Ill. His family moved to Germania, ( now called Lakota ). He ment Hattie there and fell in love. They went back to Floyd Co., Virginia to be married. On their marriage license it says Floyd Co., Virginia. It states her name as Mary Hattie Lester. It says on the marriage license that they were married at James A. Lesters place. They minister was Samuel P. Reed.
They travelled back to Lakota, Iowa where they set up house keeping. Henry was a farmer. They had one son Irven Ole Reese born on Jan. 15, 1897 in Lakota, Iowa. Hattie died in Dec. 7, 1898 in Lakota, Iowa. She is buried next to her parents in Maple Hill Cemetry, Lakota, Iowa. Cause of death is unknown at this time. When Abe and Callie Lester took Hatties son Irven to raise they changed his name to Lester and told people that Irven was their son. He used the name Lester until he was grown and ready to go out on his own when he took his real name of Reese. I have just learned that Hattie and Henry had a little girl Virgie Rose Reese born June 17, 1898 in Lakota, Iowa. She died 3 months after her mother on March 28, 1899 in Lakota, Iowa. She is buried in Maple Hill Cemetry, Lakota, Iowa. In 2002 we found an article in the Upper DesMoines Algona Republican Paper Dec. 14, 1898. " Mrs. H. C. Reese died at her home southwest of town Wednesday morning of quick consumption"
In the dictionary it says about consumption, " In the nineteeth century more young people succumbed to consumption or tuberculosis, than all other diseases. A disease that destroyed the lungs, It was transmitted by sprays from the respiratory tracts of infected people. It affected those between the ages of 5 and 30. It often occured in areas after extended contact with the infected person. Symptons were persistent coughing, chest pains, and later, coughing up blood. Those in the early stages could be cured by rest, fresh air and sunshine. Consumption was first blamed on short sleeved clothing and low neck dresses!!

Hattie married Henry Christ REESE , son of Henry REESE and Elizabeth S. , on Dec 26, 1895 in Floyd Co., Va. Henry was born in 1871 in Chicago, Ill. and died on Feb 19, 1901 in Virginia, at age 30.
General Notes: Henry Reese was ill at the time of his wife's death. From what I can find out from the Reese side that he may of had T.B. Anyway he left Irven with Hatties parents and headed back east to get help. On the way he met another women and they married. They went to Virginia
and they had a boy and then he died. I can't find anything on him where he may be buried. I have asked the Reese family and they don't know either. Abe and Calmona changed Irvens name to Lester and he didn't find out he was a Reese until he was 18 yrs old. He was in his 30's when he found out he had a half brother who was living in Iowa then and they met for
the first time.

General Notes: Dorthy Lester Rippentrop his dauther had to go over to the hospital and make the death arrangements. They buried him along side his wife Mary Nance LesterDied March 21, 1952 in Cherokee, Iowa. Clarence was in the State Mental Institution in Cherokke, Iowa when he died. Dorthy Lester Rippentrop his dauther went over to the hospital to make the funeral arrangements. He was buried in Odd fellows Cemetry, Indianlo, Iowa along side his wife Mary ( Nance ) Lester. On March 6, 1915 Clarence bought a lot in the Odd Fellows Cemetry in Indianola, Iowa. The lot number was " North half of lot seven hunfred thirty five" This is presumedly where they are buried. In the 1920 census Clarence was listed as 34 and born in Virginia. He was living with Helen Lester , age 8 and born in Iowa. and Edith Akers, age 19 and born in Virginia. He was married to Mary Genevieve Nance ( dauther of James J. Nance and Nancy Ellen Boaz ) on Dec. 6, 1910 in Algona, Iowa. They were married by Fred Taylor , a Methodist Minister. Clarence had a Bancroff address at the tome . The marriage certificate listed Marys mother as ( Christina Nuessmean ) Don't know what that means? On the 1920 cencus Clarence was living in East Lincoln Twp. Warren Co. IOwa. He was a widow at this time. Living with him was his dauther Helen and a servant, Edith Acres. He was employed as a Farm Manager. In Green Ywp, Iowa lived his other dauther Dorthy. Dorthy was living with her aunt Martha and Uncle Tony Schaper.
Clarence married Mary Genevieve NANCE . Mary was born on Jan 19, 1890 in Illinois, died on Jan 9, 1915 in Clarinda, Iowa, at age 24, and was buried in Odd Feloow Cemetry, Indianlo, Iowa.
General Notes: On the 1900 cencus it lists her birth date as August 1891. Dorthy ( Lester ) Rippentrop their dauther said that she died of pneumonia in a Mental Institution in Clarinda, Iowa. She was buried in Odd Fewwlos Cemetry, Indianola, Iowa. Before the 1900 cencus she was listed as living with her brother Charles Nance and his wifeMartha. They were living in Wesley Twp., Kossuth Co, Iowa. She was 8 yrs old at the time.

He had died before the baby was born and they didn't tell Lillie until the baby was born. The doctor named the baby Harlena and after Lillie found out that he had died she kept the name.

General Notes: A little history on Lillie. Lillie was born in Christiansburg,Va. on March 12, 1894 to Jacob and Nannie Bishop. According to her obituary, she moved to Swea City, Iowa at the age of 16. At that same age she married Harley J. Lester on Feb. 3,1910. Harley was the son of James Abraham Lester and Callie Peterman Lester, also from Motgomery County, Virginia. They lived in Lakota, Iowa, where they are all buried.
Lillie and Harley had 3 children EVERETT RICHARD LESTER, b.7-24-1914,d.6-26,1960, IRENE, b.8-30-1916 and has passed, but I don't have the date yet., HARLENA MAY LESTER, b.12-21-1918. Records show that Harley Lester died the day his daughter, Harlena was born. He died of pneumonia. Harlena has also passed and again I don't have the exact date. I was 26 years old when my beloved grandmother died, we were very close and shared many memories. I also had the privilege of knowing Everett, Irene , and Harlena. (my aunts and uncles). My grandmother also spoke of a child she and Harley had named PEARLY MAY LESTER who had to have lived and died between 1910-1918. She died at about 3 yrs. of age. So far I cannot find anything on Pearly May.
Two years after HARLEY died my grandma married OLE MOLAN of Swea City and they went on to have 3 children:Virginia Olive b. 7-21-1921..still living and Orville Thomas, b.7-8-1923 and Lyle Molan whose tombstone in Swea City cemetery only says 1937...so we assume he was born and died in the same year. (Orville is my dad and still living...) Ole and Lillie got married 2-26-1920.
My grandmother was a very special person, because of my love for her I walk the cemeteries and search the court houses and libraries. She would tell you like she told me that she as"just a hillbilly from Virginia" I am proud to say that I AM this hillbilly's granddaughter and I'm proud of the person she was. From her I have learned much, a love of family, life, God, generosity, faith, dignity,humility, strength, character. I wish everyone reading this could have known her.

General Notes: C. Brandt May writes: Apparently Claude moved to Pottawatomie Co., Ok. around 1900. He worked for William Lewis Werrell who was postmaster at Romulus, Pottawatomie Co., Ok. as a rural mail carrier after his marriage to Kate. He continued with the Post Office and was transferred to Hamlin, Texas for a period before World War I, but Kate could not tolerate being away from her family and they returned to Tribbey in Pottawatomie Co. where Claude bought a cotton gin and a farm. With the crash of the cotton market in the early 1920's, Claude sold his gin and moved his family to Shawnee, Pottawatomie Co., Ok. where he worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a Special Agent. In about 1923 Claude went to work for the City of Shawnee on the Shawnee police force.
In the 1920's, Shawnee was a typical Oklahoma oil boom town, with all the riff raff that followed the boom. Claude was well suited for this type of work. He stood 6' 4" tall and weighed 250 pounds. My father tells that he could draw his pistol from the hip and shoot a rabbit before my dad could get his shotgun up to shoot. Claude was well respected by the people in Pottawatomie County on both sides of the law. Those on the wrong side knew he was big, tough, smart, and quick on the draw. Those on the right side knew him as a man of integrity and neighbor. Claude was a State Champion as a pistol shooter, winning medals at the Oklahoma Sheriff's and Peace Officer's Association meets all over Oklahoma. Claude was made Captain and head detective for the police force in the late 1920s and served in that capacity until his death. Claude died as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident at the corner of Highland and Harrison Streets in Shawnee. He and another officer were chasing wanted bank robbers at high speed with siren and red lights displayed. Another car coming westbound on Highland struck the police car broadside killing the officer driving the car and seriously injuring Claude. Claude lived almost a year after the accident.
Claude preferred the initials C.J. Bowen, yet his legal name was James Claude.

Description:
This is a rather old-looking house, having never been painted. It is a dark color and appears to be very much older than it is. The front faces the river and the back is toward the highway. Part of the rooms have been remodelled to some extent, the floors are new, being made of narrow even plank. The old doors have not been torn down, however, but are plain with no panels and have old fashioned wooden latches. The floor in the small kitchen is higher than in the room adjoining. The chimneys are made of brick and stand one on the east and one on the west. The foundation is built of rock. There is no front porch, but a very small back porch.
Historical Significance:
This is one of the older log homes in the county.

On the whole Julius' kids had the fear of God(a very religious Primitive Baptist group.), and were a wonderful family group. The only one I knew well was my Uncle Dexter who just passed away. He was a man that never met a stranger. Loved by all. Also, of course, Minnie who raised my mother.
Julius is the one who built the house I was born in outside of Floyd. His wife, Granny I remember her by always sat by the river and fished. She was a tiny lady, and wore a black long dress and a bonnet.

EXPERIENCE OF GRACE (Published in a Baptist Magazine in 1920)
Dear Sister: My mind is impressed to write to you a dream that I had last August. I had had many doubts and fears and had often tried to ask the most precious Lord to please show me in a dream or in some other way make me understand.
In my dream I was in my kitchen, about my work, when all at once, I saw a little child come to the door with a little lamb. I thought it was beautiful, and that they said "This is a peace offering." It excited me so that I made a noise which awoke my husband, and he awoke me out of sleep and asked what was the matter. Then I went back to sleep and dreamed that my husband and I were standing in a doorway, and that I had a vision of my dear esteemed father, who asked me if I had forgotten what he had told me. I told him I had not. It seemed that he was not like he was when here; but was--oh, so white! He seemed to be smiling at me, but started away, leaving me to journey on in this world of sin and strife.
I thought I would go to church more when I got well, but I did not. I felt to be too great a sinner to be with good people. I promised to do better, but it seemed to me that I was the greatest sinner in this world, and that the Lord had forsaken me. I felt that I had not a friend in the world, and that even my dear companion had turned away from me. I felt that I had nowhere to go to ask the Lord to have mercy on my poor sinful soul. I would go to bed and cry myself to sleep. It seemed that I was in so great distress that I could not live to see another sun rise. My husband would ask what troubled me, and I would tell him I did not know. I would often get up, after all the rest were asleep, and go out into the yard begging the Lord to have mercy on my poor sinful soul. These words would always come to mind: "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want". while he is near. I wanted to read, but when I picked up a paper, something would say, "You had better read the Bible." I went on feeling that I was lost forever, and that the Lord, my husband and all others had forsaken me, so that I had not even a friend; that I was only a poor lost sinner, which me me cry, "O Lord, please have mercy on a poor sinful soul."
The first Sunday in October, 1916, I was out in the yard, feeling that I was sinking down. I went into the house, where no one could see me, and knelt down and tried once more to ask the Lord to help me bear the great burden that was upon me. It seemed that I never could get up. But I believe the Lord spoke peace to my soul: for I heard a Voice saying, "Thy sins are forgiven thee: come out from the world; take up thy cross; you will have to go to the church." My burden was gone, and I could not help clapping my hands for joy. But soon I began to feel that, maybe, I was deceived and begged the Lord to five me more light.
I went to the church at Floyd the fourth Sunday in October, 1915; and, as we were entering the church, they were singing the song that had been on my mind all night. Brother Lester preached a sermon specially for me, for he told my feelings better than I can express them myself,

The original house has been recently torn down and another is being built out of the old lumber. Part of one of the old chimneys is still standing. The old kitchen was built above the big house.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
William Ira Howard was a slave owner, noted for his kindness to his slaves, and when they were freed several of them remained with him rather than go free. When the Union army came through Floyd county during the War between the States Colonel Joseph Howard placed his money and valuables in an iron box and had one of the slaves carry it to the roof of the house and place it in a chimney where it remained in safety until the raiding party left. He also had a number of fine horses who he directed several of his slaves to take up the river and hide them in the cliffs. A young negro slave about 16 years old betrayed him and told the soldiers where the animals were hidden. The horses were taken away as well as the negro who betrayed his master.
From this home went Captain James Madison Howard, a Confederate officer in the War between the States, who was killed in 1865 a short time before the surrender. He was the grandfather of Lucy Howard.

Mrs. Della Graham, wife of Romundus D. Graham, near White Oak Grove, died Friday after a lingering illness with consumption. She was a Miss Duncan before she was married, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Duncan, near Riner. She was married about 18 months ago. She was taken back to her old home and buried Sunday. She was well known and quite popular and her death was a great shock to the entire community. We extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband and other relatives.

General Notes: William J. said his correct name was William James and that his birth certificate is incorrect with William Jackson. He married his second wife, Bernice Myers, in 1918 and they moved to Molino, Illinois and lived until 1922 while William worked in a munition plant.
In 1922, William, Bernice, Jack (Bernice's son) and Lloyd (their son) moved by mortorcycle with a side car from Illinois to Virginia to live. This was an adjustment for Bernice as the Lester house had no screen doors and the chickens were in and out of the house all day. In 1926, William got into a fight with his brother Silas and thought he had killed him so ran away back to Iowa. He is standing next to Silas in the picture I'll send that was taken in 1948, but he never saw his mother again. His mother called him Willie and wanted her wandering son to come home. William married #3 Edna Gearhart in 1941 and the marriage lasted about 3-4 years. William was very athletic and could run like a deer. He was and excellent shot even at age 50, and gave all his kids guns for presents. He had a drinking problem and was like a raging bull after drinking too much.
His mother, Sarah Ellen died about 1934, and was a very private, independent lady. She lived with her son John Payton Obadiah Lester in her later years.
William J. Lester is found as 16 year old living with his uncle Jim Bishop in 1900 census Montgomery Co., Va. He thought very highly of this uncle.
