General Notes: After Virginia Ann Lester's 1st husband, George Taylor Shelor, died of measles during the Civil War, she married Madison Fulcher who was about 8 years younger. All we know of Madison, so far, is that he served in the 22nd Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. He is supposed to have come from Patrick County, but we have not found his relatives as yet.

Virginia Lester had several children with George T. Shelor, most notably George W. Shelor who was the father of George Dudley Shelor, Sr. and grandfather of George Dudley Shelor, Jr. Both of the "Dudley's" were prominent members of Floyd county, serving as Circuit Court clerks.

Virginia Lester and Madison Fulcher had 3 children that we know of: David Elbert, Lury (or Laura) Ellen, and Alice L. We did find a notation in a "Whitlock" family cemetery where an additional Fulcher child is buried that we assume must be another child of Virginia Lester. We make this assumption because she is buried along with Virginia Lester's sister, cousin, and uncle and the mother of Virginia's daughter-in-law.

Virginia married George Taylor SHELOR on Mar 9, 1854.³⁰ George was born on Aug 2, 1827 ³⁰ and died on Jul 23, 1862, at age 34 ³⁰.^,71

General Notes: "Elder Posey G. Lester was a popular and well-loved man. He was a preacher, a writer, a singing master. At the age of 23, he entered the ministry of the Primitive Baptist Church and was one of the most extensively known of its ministers. He traveled and preached in 21 states and Canada, one year covering more than thirteen thousand miles on preaching trips. At the same time, he served as pastor of churches in Kentucky and Virginia. He was Moderator of the New River District Primitive Baptist Association, which numbered 26 churches and about 2000 members. For 40 years he was, first, associate editor, then editor-in-chief of Zion's Landmark, a leading church paper of the Primitive Baptist Church, published at Wilson, NC.

He was elected to represent the Fifth District of Virginia in the House of Representatives of the United States Congress and served two terms (1888-1892).

In 1920, he left Floyd County and moved the family to Roanoke where he became pastor of the Primitive Baptist Church there. Many baby boys were named after him."

General Notes: Abe and Callie moved to Iowa abt 1900. Callie wrote home to her family. "In Virginia, we had lots of friends but little food. Now in Iowa we have lots to eat but not many friends."

Abe was 18 years old and Callie 16 years old when they married. Her first 2 children Hattie and Martha Frances were born before her 17th birthday. They were twins.

Before the 1880 census, James and Callie lived in Auburn District of Montgomery Co., Virginia. James was a laborer and could not read or write. They had 3 children at this time. Twins Mattie ( Martha ) and Hattie (Mary) and Metta O. ( Ocie ).

At the 1900 census, they were living in Germania, Kossuth Co., Iowa. They moved there sometime between the birth of their sons Vance, 1896 in Virginia, and John B. 1901 in Iowa. At that time 8 of their children were living with them. Arthur, Everett, Clarence, George, Harley, Eva ( Christina ) Anna, Vance.

At the 1910 cencus James and Callie were living in Iowa. They had been married 33 yrs. Callie was the mother of 12 children, with 7 still living. Living with them at the time was Harley, and John. Also a grandson (Irven Reese ) from their daughter, Hattie, who had passed away. James was a farmer and Harley was a laborer.

James listed G.L. Dalton as the executor of his will. G.L. Dalton had already died by the time James had died, so I.E. Wortman was appointed as the executor. In the affidavit, I. E. Wortman swore that James had departed this life in East Lucas Twp. Johnson Co. Iowa on the day of November 12, 1928. James owned a house at Lot 8, Block 4, original Platt of Lakota Incorporated. It was valued at $1,250.00 and his personel property was valued at $100.00. For the preliminary unheritance tax the beneficiaries were: Callie Ann Lester widow, Lakota, Iowa; Martha Lester Schaper, 54, daughter, Lakota, Iowa; Ocie Lester Alers, 51, Daughter, Prole, Iowa; Art Lester 49, son, Lakota, Iowa; Clarence Lester 45, son, Indianila, Iowa; George Lester, 43, son, Titonka, Iowa; John Lester, son, 29, Joplin, Missouri.

General Notes: C. Brandt May writes: William had three living sisters, two looked like Indian squaws, one had blonde hair and blue eyes. One married a Adams and one married a Trousdale. The family legend indicates that William Alfred was an orphan and was raised by his aunt Mary Casey. This is supported by the 1880 census of Madison Co., Arkansas where we find Alfred living on his cousin Jessie Casey's farm with Jessie's mother Mary living in the same household. We find that the Casey's farm is next door to Calvin J. Lester's farm where Alf met Anna Lester.

To date I have not been able to tie Mary Casey to a specific Casey. I am of the opinion that Mary Casey is the daughter of Nicholas Bowen and Rebecca George. Several Casey families lived in the neighborhood around Nicholas's farm.

4. Description - This house is the original structure and has not been remodelled.
5. Historical Significance:
The land near cemetery on east side of the house was known as "Buffalo hip" because buffalo once roamed through the woods there.
There are a great many antiques in the home:
1. Old maple bed, plain deisgn, about 2 1/2 fee high. The bed is about 140 years old. It has never been painted.
2. Old chest and bureau, made of maple, very plain, about 106 years old. They were given to Elizabeth Wickham and Moses Dickerson, Jr. as a wedding present by her father who made them. The marriage occured in 1831.
3. Old oak spinning wheel, not very large, has three legs.
4. Over one of the doors on the northeast side of the house are deer horns to put the rifles on.
5. In the front hall there is a water wheel. This was built by Neal Dickerson, a son of Coffee Dickerson. The spring which furnished water for the household was across the river being in front of the dwelling. The water had to be carried across a bridge before this wheel was built. A post or pole was set up and a double rope or cord was drawn across this pole over the river and fastened to the wheel. When the wheel was turned the bucket was sent across the river where it went in the spring, was filled with water and came back. This method of getting water is not used now.

March 11, 1918. According to Clyde Maxey,"this is Cornelius Dickerson who was called Neil by the family. He was a smart man in that he was an excellent carpenter and was working on the invention of the "knuckle" that holds train cars together when he got sick.

He designed the house that Grandpa(Julius) lived in, the one that you know.

I think he also designed others for grandpa also. He was working on perpetual motion when he died.

He had about 2 1/2 acres of land on a spring branch that emptied into the West Fork of Little River. I once owned property that adjoined his and it was in a remote area. He had dammed the creek for water power and had a cabin/workshop there. They were gone by my time.

I don't know what kind of "gold watch" he had but Uncle Dexter keeps talking about him being buried with his gold watch.

When Uncle Pete, his brother, had his estate sale there was a ferris type wheel with some metal balls that would roll around inside that was supposed to have been how he was trying to use perpetual motion. The wheel was about five feet in diameter and what was supposed to happen was when the wheel started, these balls would keep it going. Of course, it would eventually stop due to friction.

THE DEATH ANGEL
Miss Malera Dickerson, daughter of the late Coffee Dickerson, died at the home of her mother last Tuesday morning of heart trouble. She had been sick for several months and the death was not unexpected. She was born Apr. 14, 1864, and died Aug. 26, 1902, being 37 years, 4 months, and 12 days old. She bore her sickness with great patience and fortitude and seemed to think she would get well. A short time before her death she realized that she must die and prayed for the Lord to take her home. She was a very estimable lady and was held in the highest esteem by every one. Burial services were conducted at the house yesterday evening by Elder P. G. Lester, after which she was laid to rest in the family burying ground amid a large group of sorrowing relatives and friends. She leaves a mother, three sisters, six brothers and a large connection of friends to mourn her death. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the breaved family. ⁵⁶

Your brother Posey has been very ill and will probably pass away. I visited him today in his ward. We were together for some time. He talked of his old home and of his brothers Walter and Peter and his sister Betty. He had not belonged to a church but he made a beautiful confession to Christ. I baptized him and received him in to the fellowship of the Christian Church. Enclosed find a statement which I desire that you present to the minister of the Church or the governing body. The Church counts him as one of their own. I am doing all I can for him and the nurses and hospital attendants are very kind. A good Christian nurse is with him most of the time now.
There are many sad things in this world and many sorrows growing out of this war, but the comforting thing is that God is still with us and never fails us and in his good time he makes all things clear and bright.
Kindly notify your brother and sister of the news.You will, I feel sure, share this letter with them.
If the worst should happen I will drop you a note. Of course, you will be notified through regular channels.

I wrote you yesterday stating how ill you brother was. He passed away at 10:00 last night. His final moments were calm and peaceful trusting in our Common Father.
He will be buried in the Merignac-Gironde Cemetery, AEF No. 27. It is a beautiful spot and he lies there with many of his comrades who gave their life for their country. Accept my sympathy and prayers in this hour of your loss of you brother and companion.

Also a statement of faith accompanied the above letters, setting forth that Posey Dickerson had made a profession of faith and had joined the Christian Church and asked that his name be enrolled on the church book of the Primitive Baptist Church of Floyd stating that he had been baptised by the above named Edmond Talmage Witt on Feb. 2, 1919.

He was the youngest son of the late Coffee Dickerson and was about 41 or 42 years of age. He spent several years in the west but the last few years he spent here on a farm that he bought known as the Howard Place near Camp Creek.
Mr. Dickerson died of bronchial pneumonia on Feb. 3, and as stated in one of the letters was buried in France.
He leaves four brothers and two sisters - Julias, Peter, Moses, and Walter Dickerson, and Mrs. S. W. Jones and Miss Bette Dickerson all of this county.
We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones.

Uncle Dexter Dickerson said that Posey would stand on his porch as others went to service and wave them on saying "go on boys I won't be far behind you".

He was brought back from France and is buried in the Dickerson/Sumpter Cemetery.

Posey made a contract between him and his brother on September 21, 1917 that is recorded in deed book #43, page 75. He was going to enlist in the U. S. service and go to the war, Walter, his brother was to have his land of 116 acres if he never returned; if he did return Posey Dickerson was to have the land back. He never did return so Walter Dickerson now owns the land. See Walter for a description of the house made by the Virgina Historical Inventory for the Works Progress Administration of VA.
