Hulen Lester was named for his father's youngest brother. He left
Floyd County, date unknown but perhaps not many years after his first
marriage, and moved to Ohio, later to Shelby County, Indiana, where
he married the second time. Nothing is known about either his first
wife or his second wife, and very little about his children.

John Lester II left a bequest of $100 to his granddaughter, Julia
Ann Weddle, daughter of Matilda, and it is assumed that Matilda
was not living in 1831 when her father made his will. According
to family tradition, they moved to Lee County, Virginia - nothing
further known.

Calvin became a member of the Baptist Church at the age of 18, and became a preacher at the age of 36. Calvin preached a sermon the Sunday before he passed away. Calvin was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Republican Party. Calvin married his first wife, Winnie Shoemaker, in 1850. In 1863 Winnie passed away. In 1864 Calvin married Nancy Burns. The above information was gleaned from Calvin's obituary published in Huntsville, Arkansas and Fayetteville, Arkansas newspapers.
Having lived in Chaffee, Missouri about 13 miles south of Cape Girardeau, I am of the opinion that Jackson Co., Missouri is in fact Jackson, Missouri the county seat of Cape Girardeau County. Jackson Co., Missouri is where Kansas City, Mo. is located, some 350 miles on the other side of the state. Cape Girardeau Co. and Stoddard Co., Mo. are in the bootheel but most of these counties lie in the foothills of the Ozarks. It is an extremely fertile area. Because of its proximity to the Mississippi delta and the lowland swamps it is infested with mosquitoes and was not a very healthy place to live prior to 1900. This area of Missouri was settled by German emigrants in the 1840s. During the Civil War this area of Missouri was a stronghold of Union sympathizers. The area where Calvin settled in 1870 in Benton Co., Arkansas is near the White River. At that time Benton Co., Arkansas was a stronghold of Confederate sympathizers, whereas Madison Co., Arkansas was a stronghold of Unionists. Could this be the reason for Calvin's decision to move to the Aurora area high up in the Ozarks, or was it a family connection or for health reasons? From my research on the Bowen clan I have found several Cox's in Madison County. Could they be related to Calvin's mother?
Unconfirmed but reasonable statement by Calvin daughter Rachel Mae has Calvin J. fighting in the Union Army in a Missouri regiment. Calvin and Nancy are buried in the same grave in the National Cemetery in Fayetteville, Washington Co., Arkansas. If in fact Calvin did serve in the Union Army he may have served in this area, for it was under Federal control from 1862 onward. He may have simply liked the looks of the country.

General Notes: John W. Lester lived about 6 miles from the town of Jacksonville
near present Rt. 221. He owned more than 200 acres of land, farmed,
raised tobacco and operated the Lester Mill on Beaver Dam Creek near
Little River. He possessed a huge amount of farming and mill equipment
and personal property. He became bankrupt in 1873. He moved to
Peterstown, West Va., where he ran a barroom for two years.
In 1877, he bought and operated a hotel in Blacksburg, Va. He became embroiled
in a dispute with a man in Blacksburg who shot and killed him in 1894.
He was brought back to Floyd and buried in Pine Creek Cemetery.
After John Lester's death, Louvenia returned to Floyd and lived
with her son Thomas Lester until her death. Thomas Lester continued
to operate the Lester Mill on Beaver Dam Creek. It burned down in 1903,
was rebuilt, and burned again for the last time in 1926.

Ira Lester, second son and third child of Hulen & Nellie Lester,
married Amanda Guy, who was the oldest of eleven children. Her
parents, John & Nancy Guy were then living in the Pilot section of
Montgomery County; both parents died within a few years after her
marriage. (Guy family information obtained from Elmer E. Guy,
Elizabeth, NJ).
Ira Lester was a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker, as well
as a farmer. He and his brother Harvey served an apprenticeship and
learned the trade from their first cousin, Fleming Lester, in Floyd.
In 1862, Hulen & Nellie gave Ira & Amanda 93 acres of land on
present-day Clarence Road, adjoining the farm of Ira's brother Joshua.
Ira bought some additional acreage. Their first home was a small frame
house (2 or 3 rooms) but with a growing family they soon needed a
larger home. Ira built a large white frame house for the family (date
unknown) beside the original cottage. They must have been proud of
their handsome new home: 8 rooms finished with pine paneling, an
oak staircase, a porch all around the house, a large attic. In 1914
when it was advertised for sale by his son Albert, it was described
as: "Farm of l27 1/2 acres of land, 3 1/2 miles south of Riner, known as
Ira Lester's home place. Eight-room dwelling, barn and all necessary
out-buildings, plenty of water, large old and young orchards, also
pear, peach and cherry trees, grapes and berries, and lays well."
The house is still standing but has not been occupied for a number
of years and'has been allowed to deteriorate.
Ira died in 1878 at the age of 54, cause of death unknown. The
three oldest sons, Monroe, George, Charles, married and left home before
their father's death. Albert, fourth son, lived at home and took over
the farm, and his mother continued living there until her death in 1902.
Albert bought out his brothers and sisters and became sole owner. In
1914 he sold the farm to Moses I. & Elizabeth Dickerson for $5500.
Ira and Amanda Lester had 13 children. The 7 sons were big men
and were known as the "fighting Lesters." The 13 children were born
in 20 years, 6 were born in the first 7 years of their marriage,
3 died in infancy, 10 lived to adulthood: Monroe H., John W.,
George H., Charles M., Albert M., Tazewell H., Martha A., Elizabeth
A., Floyd J., Cephas Bunyan, Ira Elmer, Sallie Amanda, Mary B. V.

Abe was 18 years old and Callie 16 years old when they married. Her first 2 children Hattie and Martha Frances were born before her 17th birthday. They were twins.
Before the 1880 census, James and Callie lived in Auburn District of Montgomery Co., Virginia. James was a laborer and could not read or write. They had 3 children at this time. Twins Mattie ( Martha ) and Hattie (Mary) and Metta O. ( Ocie ).
At the 1900 census, they were living in Germania, Kossuth Co., Iowa. They moved there sometime between the birth of their sons Vance, 1896 in Virginia, and John B. 1901 in Iowa. At that time 8 of their children were living with them. Arthur, Everett, Clarence, George, Harley, Eva ( Christina ) Anna, Vance.
At the 1910 cencus James and Callie were living in Iowa. They had been married 33 yrs. Callie was the mother of 12 children, with 7 still living. Living with them at the time was Harley, and John. Also a grandson (Irven Reese ) from their daughter, Hattie, who had passed away. James was a farmer and Harley was a laborer.
James listed G.L. Dalton as the executor of his will. G.L. Dalton had already died by the time James had died, so I.E. Wortman was appointed as the executor. In the affidavit, I. E. Wortman swore that James had departed this life in East Lucas Twp. Johnson Co. Iowa on the day of November 12, 1928. James owned a house at Lot 8, Block 4, original Platt of Lakota Incorporated. It was valued at $1,250.00 and his personel property was valued at $100.00. "Floyd and Susan Lester lived in Auburn Township, Montgomery County. Hulen Lester deeded his son Floyd a tract of 118 acres in 1862. Their house stood near the Riner road (present Rt. 8) and present Camp Carysbrook road. When Susan died in 1868. Guliford Dudley, the oldest child, was 15 years old, and John Dow, the youngest, was 5 years old. In 1885, Floyd divided up his property (over 300 acres) among his six children, and in 1888 he moved to Floyd County to live with his son Hulen Berdine, where he died in 1899.
In 1902, a portion of this farm, "known as the Floyd Lester land," was purchased by George T. Akers, whose wife was Posie Lester, daughter of Charlie D. Lester [Floyd's brother]. The purchase price was $2500.
Noted events in his life were:
• Military: Aug 1, 1863. John Floyd served in the Confederate Army, Company k, 22nd Regiment Virginia Cavalry under Capt. Miles A. Francis. He enlisted Aug 1, 1863 for 3 years. Documentation in possession of Jerry Curtis Lester.
