The Morgan Family

Memories of Etta

By Carrie Robbins

Etta Morgan was born in 1906 as the ninth child of John and Camillia Morgan. When she was 13-years-old, her mother passed away. When she grew older she got a job at the Box Factory in High Point, NC, making only a few dollars a week. She married at a young age to Ollie Robbins.

Early in their marriage, tragedy struck. Ollie developed tuberculosis and lost a lung at the age of 21. At this time they had two small children, but they later had several more. Times were sometimes hard, living without electricity and running water, but it didn't seem to bother anyone. Along with raising her own children, it seemed as if Etta raised half the neighborhood kids as well. She always worked to help supplement the family income. She showed her children lots of love and always made sure they were in church. And when Easter came, Etta saw to it that each child had a new outfit, sewn by her own sweet hands. When you visited, she expected you to eat and to never leave empty handed. You would be caring at least one jar of her canned greenbeans.

One day after church Etta and Ollie returned home from church and had lost their home and everything they owned to fire. They moved in with my husband and I until their home was rebuilt. Ollie had worked with Burlington Industries and the company was good enough to help them get back on their feet again. Etta stood strong and tall through it all. Despite the other tragedies she had to face, the worst nightmare of all came when she lost her husband, and then two-years later, her oldest son. In 1971 Etta had a stroke and went home to be with the Lord. She was an icon in her day and will always be loved and remembered that's why she's rated as #1 mama of the year and still is.
