RMFH-MASSEY FAMILY NOTES:

Summary: New developments have come about surrounding this family.  I am sure more will be revealed as research continues. The biggest mystery was in finding out the name of my gg grandfather.  It turns out, based on census data collected that his name was Edmond Jefferson Massey.  He usually went by "Jeff".  I will be including all the census records indicating this and other findings as time permits.  For example, on the 1860 census for Lauderdale Co. AL, I found a Mrs. Patience Massey as HOH, along with "Edmon" age 17 and Armeitha Owens age 25.  Other individuals in the same household included Owens children to which I believe belong to Armeitha (who is probably the sister of Edmond).  To get a better idea, please see the census section of this page.

As for the Owens family, Nancy Ann Owens (wife of Edmond) has been the subject of a controversy which involves family members claiming she was a Cherokee native.  However, other sources point to her father as being a William Owens and an Unknown wife or as a daughter to Harriet Clemmons-second wife to William Owens. The name "Fawn Locke" has been passed down from generation to generation, yet the family historians can find no paper trail for this name or anything even referencing it.  The William Owens family was said to have traveled by wagon trains to Washington Co. AR, which is only approximately 30 miles from the Cherokee Reservation in Oklahoma.  They are said to have first migrated there in 1844.

It is known, however that Massey descendants still live in Alabama and Tennessee.  Later descendants moved on to Missouri, Illinois (me!), Louisiana, and Florida.  If you have any questions, comments, etc. by all means sign my guestbook.  If you are a cousin, then in the true spirit of family, write me directly!!
